Hunter brand gone in to administration!

I've been looking at a pair of Hunter vegan walking boots for a while. Yesterday I decided I was going to get them. But when I went on to their website it's gone in to administration 😭 I obviously wasn't meant to have them!

I'm not surprised anyone who knows anything knows their footwear is inferior to other brands. Their wellies are overpriced tat IMO.

rbe78 · 08/06/2023 15:57

I'm not surprised - they've utterly lost their way of late. Since outsourcing their production to China, the quality has nose-dived. My first pair of Hunter wellies lasted 10 years. My 2nd-6th pairs lasted anywhere between 14 and 2 months.

AnAdultCat · 08/06/2023 16:14

Oh! I didn't realise the quality wasn't great. They had a pair of vegan waterproof walking boots I ummed and ahhed about for ages. Maybe it was a good thing I didn't get them!

They went into administration back in 2006 and were then bought out by a consortium. After this, production was moved to China and quality dipped.

They were looking for more funding earlier this year so looks like they didn't get it and now they're in administration. Maybe they'll be bailed out again or maybe this is finally it.

Their wellies pre-2006 were amazing.

darisdet · 08/06/2023 16:21

Another one here not surprised. A big mistake to compromise on quality.

rbe78 · 08/06/2023 16:21

They were great, but now seemingly just look good and then break almost instantly. They threw away 100+ years reputation for quality overnight, so I'm not surprised that has resulted in them going bust.

PimpMyFridge · 08/06/2023 16:21

I echo those replies. Not a supplier of good footwear.

rbe78 · 08/06/2023 16:23

@HundredMilesAnHour Aaah, that makes sense, I didn't realise they had alredy been sold once before.

Boltonb · 08/06/2023 16:25

I’ve got Hunter wellies that I’ve had for years and years. Recommend to a friend, and hers were thin, cheap, and broke within 6 months.

As PPs have said, the quality nose dived years ago. Lucky escape OP!

This. You can charge higher prices for higher quality (its old model) or you can be cheap and cheerful but you can't charge top dollar for poor quality. This is especially true for brands that used to market specifically to consumers who were prepared to pay more for a high quality item. By definition, those are people who value and recognise good quality, so they will be particularly sensitive to changes in your standards.

Looking at you: Boden, Doc Marten and many others, though M&S has finally turned things around .

Blankscreen · 08/06/2023 17:04

I guess the problem is that if the good quality wellies mean that you only need to huy 1 pair every ten years that isn't going to keep them in business.

Bunce1 · 08/06/2023 17:05

Hunter quality is SHITE

GnomeDePlume · 08/06/2023 17:29

What is the best brand for wellies now?

BarelyLiterate · 08/06/2023 17:34

This is what happens when companies with a reputation for producing high quality products decide to stop doing that & produce shoddy, overpriced branded tat instead. They get found out & go bust.

Isn’t capitalism wonderful? 😉

CollieWobbles2023 · 08/06/2023 17:36

Hunter wellies are absolutely awful. Mine split on the first week of having them and the customer service said I had used them too much outdoors on rough ground.

I had gone for a walk in a forest along a path. That was it. No stones, gravel or even twigs!

I'm sure they had absolutely no choice. To continue making in England would have been impossible.

Most wellies are made in China now.

Its a real shame for Hunter.

Shame people don't want to pay 200+ a pair for wellies, as that's what they would have cost if made here.

I agree that off-shoring was probably unavoidable, but Dunlop off-shores, yet its wellies are fantastic quality and cost £15 for a basic pair.

Hunter just replaced one unsustainable business model (high quality & expensive) with another (poor quality & expensive).

DemonicCaveMaggot · 08/06/2023 18:26

DH bought a pair of Hunter wellies and they fell apart in a about a year of minimal use.

Meanwhile my Walmart 5 dollar 'dairy boots' kept on trucking for about 13 years of heavy duty gardening.

Megifer · 08/06/2023 18:41

Not surprised they are rubbish!! I've had 2 pairs in the last 5 years, genuinely only ever used when its raining and im going on the field so maybe about 6 months in total days? Both pairs started leaking!

Now got a pair from somewhere like B&M i think cost about £15 and they are going strong after a year.

OrlandointheWilderness · 08/06/2023 18:50

Hunters are crap and have been for years. I use Le chameau boots. I spend the majority of winter in them, I use them out shooting and on stable yards, dog training, walking etc. expensive but have lasted (apart from where the puppy chewed off the buckle! 😂).

Mine split 😪 as did my Aigles (and they were really uncomfortable as well).

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/06/2023 19:04

I love my Aigles! They are as comfortable as walking boots. Their sizing is weird though - DH can't wear them because none of them fit his (average sized) feet.

I’ve had a pair of their wellies for nearly ten years and have found them to be excellent. Most comfortable pair I’ve owned, they’re still in perfect condition despite them being used often.
