Hunter brand gone in to administration!

I've been looking at a pair of Hunter vegan walking boots for a while. Yesterday I decided I was going to get them. But when I went on to their website it's gone in to administration 😭 I obviously wasn't meant to have them!

I love my Aigles! They are as comfortable as walking boots. Their sizing is weird though - DH can't wear them because none of them fit his (average sized) feet.

I used to have the non neoprene ones which were comfy but two pairs split within 18 months. Bought the neoprene ones and they are slightly too short and pull my socks down!

What is the best brand for wellies now?

I've had my Le Chameau wellies since a few months before my eldest was born (Christmas present, thank you DH) - DS1 is now 7.5 and they're still absolutely perfect, despite lots of dog walking, lockdown walking and farm visits etc. They fit beautifully on the calf and look great

HighInTheHills · 08/06/2023 20:43

I have a pair of green Hunter (Huntress) wellies from 2004 and still going strong after two decades of farm life.

That was the quality they were renowned for, such a shame that they changed their production and sold out. I'm not surprised they've gone in to administration. These days I would only buy Le Chameau or Percussion wellies as the quality of those is excellent and they stand up to serious hard daily use.

Brokendaughter · 08/06/2023 20:56

I have an old pair of Hunters that are still going strong even after years of wear.

I wouldn't take a new pair even if they were free.

All they do now is rip off their customers, trading on a reputation they haven't deserved in years.

Another one with a pair of 'original' hunters still going strong. I bought mine to wade through the floods of 2000!

What is the best brand for wellies now?

Dubarry

QuintanaRoo · 08/06/2023 21:03

Or £10 Dunlops! U.K. farmers up and down the country can’t be wrong! 😁.

Dubarry look nice and are good quality but expensive. I wear my Dunlops most mornings for an early dog walk and they last about 18 months on average which for the price is good. But they’re nothing special.

crumpet · 08/06/2023 21:08

My Le Chameau lasted me over 20 years. They finally split this winter, and I have some Ariat neoprene lined wellies which are comfortable and sturdy. Hopefully they’ll last another 20!

ginoclocksomewhere · 08/06/2023 21:10

They're expensive, but I've had my Chameus over 10 years, daily wear for horses and dog walks and they are still going strong.

They are too wide for me so hay falls into then!

I have Ariat neoprene ones which are super comfortable and stand up to hard wearing.

cocksstrideintheevening · 08/06/2023 21:25

Not surprised at all. They were great 20 something years ago. My mallet pair wee e about ten years ago, awful.

GnomeDePlume · 08/06/2023 21:28

Thank you!

Sounds like it will be Dunlops for me. I have to fit my fat calves in. These will be for winter on the allotment. I normally wear work boots but the water sometimes is just too deep.

orangeflags · 08/06/2023 21:34

Hunters are rubbish so not surprised. I like Ariat wellies, although DH swears by Barbour wellies which fit his fat legs really well

Bigglebiggle · 08/06/2023 21:35

I needed some wellies at short notice, ran into asda and bought some for £10 thinking i can get some better ones when i have time. This was over 4 years ago and they are still going strong. Most comfortable wellies I've ever worn.

Waitymatey · 08/06/2023 21:41

Had my Sainsburys ones for years, great for dog walking and mucking out and cheap as chips 😃

Bluebells1970 · 08/06/2023 21:52

I've had 3 pairs of Aigle wellies in 5 years... I walk about 5 miles a day with the dogs over pretty rough ground but I've refused to invest any more money in them.

Funnily enough, I just bought a pair of Hunter Balmoral hybrid ones (look a bit like Muck Boots) and they're incredibly well made and comfortable. Bit buggered now in terms of guarantee though Hmm

Floralnomad · 08/06/2023 21:58

Have a look at Rocket Dog @AnAdultCat , my daughter has some very nice vegan boots from them .

Welliehead · 08/06/2023 22:02

I bought a pair of Decathlon neoprene lined chunky wellies three years ago and they are absolutely brilliant. Sadly dd has nicked them.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/06/2023 23:26

It is very unwise to have the same size feet as one’s daughters 😉

Ah, interesting. Mine are older than 5 years, so maybe Aigle has gone off the boil too?

backinthebox · 08/06/2023 23:55

My Aigles are about 6 years old and seemingly indestructible. I’ve been told the more recently made ones are not so good though, which is a shame because the ones I have are so good. I’d like another pair just like them when they eventually give in.

PimpMyFridge · 09/06/2023 09:03

After replacing my much loved old school hunters wellies with new style crap hunters wellies and realising things could never be the same, I got some Cotswolds wellies for me and some Grub's wellies for my dh, both are brilliant, holding up well to some serious punishment and I'm over my sadness now. 😁

MorrisZapp · 09/06/2023 09:10

This is the cycle of any heritage brand. Niche success leads to exposure, exposure leads to increased demand, up scaling production leads to a drop in quality. Meanwhile the prices keep going up.

Same thing happens to comedians. The absolutely brilliant ones who have an intimate or mid sized venue in the palm of their hand soon progress to selling out bigger and bigger venues - you can't blame them. But the audience connection is lost and the ticket price climbs ever higher.

marmite2023 · 09/06/2023 09:15

Same thing happened with ariat. I have Hunter wellies that are 20 years old and still going. Ariats they are 25 years old. Bought new pairs of each brand a few years ago to freshen up at last. Both pairs have died before my originals gave out. Built-in obsolescence and cheaper construction. May as well buy Shires or another every day brand and save your money as they last the same amount of time. DuBarry is going the same way too. Mum’s new ones fell apart in 2 years. She got some mark Todd versions of dubarries and they’re great - and half the price.
