What has replaced skinny jeans and a nice top?

Friday night at the pub is just one example, but I guess what I’m after is what has replaced ‘skinny jeans and a nice top’.

I’m ok with casual, and I’m ok with properly dressy, but I really struggle with the in between.

Im early 30s, busty, size 10, short with a stomach that means anything cropped is out.

Don’t like wearing heels, a heeled boot is ok.

All inspiration welcome but generally prefer lowish budget, I’m lost!

I’ve looked on ASOS but can’t even find a ‘nice top’ they would go with mom jeans.

Widelegged trousers and a slightly fitted top?
Jumpsuit?

There are very few nice tops now, I agree.

Precipice · 15/04/2023 21:37

Nice top and bootcuts. Lots of corduroy trousers in the last half year too.

TomatoSandwiches · 15/04/2023 21:46

V neck A line Jersey type material dress, midi with leggings and ankle boots or maxi with sandals.

Wide leg linen trousers, silky V neck, again A line vest top with as little detail as possible.

High rise flared jeans/70 style with fine knit top, rolled and tucked in at the waist slash neck, and bell sleeves, either with chucks, wedges or boots, really versatile.

Or same cut jeans with a viscose floaty top.

I need to think about jeans. I suit skinny jeans so I’m not sure I will part with them. I have long slim legs. I think the next best for me would be boot cut jeans like I wore at university. I think similar shaped tops would work.
I hate really high rises too. So need to find some mid rise ones and try them out.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 15/04/2023 21:49

Wide leg trousers, a fitted top (I go merino jumper) and trainers. Probably not white any more but coloured like Hoff etc.

KILM · 15/04/2023 21:50

Wide leg and a fitted top!! As a fellow bust gal i've actually been shocked by how much more flattering it is.

Flowersun6 · 15/04/2023 21:50

Zara high waisted trousers.

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 21:52

Watching with interest as I’m a similar build (but a lot older). I do the wide legged trousers, trainers and jumper look but interested in seeing what others suggest. It’s difficult to find petite stuff too.

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 21:53

Where do you all buy your petite wide legged trousers/jeans btw?

Mirabai · 15/04/2023 21:54

Skinny bell-bottoms boots and a nice top.

BansheeofInsherin · 15/04/2023 21:55

I am much older too. I have good legs so I wear slim jeans.

HappiDaze · 15/04/2023 21:55

I went to the pub last night, a cool local pub, and loads of women of all ages were wearing all sorts of jeans including skinny. No one cared and no one looked out of place. Everyone wore different styles.

BansheeofInsherin · 15/04/2023 21:56

Where are all these nice tops you speak of? All I can find are polyester floral sacks which make me look like a shower curtain.

Unbridezilla · 15/04/2023 21:58

My pub outfits are

  1. midi dress and ankle boots (a casual one with high round neck and probably long sleeves)
  2. long denim skirt & jumper with trainers/ankle boots
  3. wide leg trousers/jeans & cropped jumper with trainers

I imagine I'll do the same but with chunky black sandals for summer

LethargeMarg · 15/04/2023 22:00

I went on a (rare) big night out a few weeks ago and panic bought a maxi type leopard print dress from next and the model in the photo wore it with converse so I copied that and added a leather jacket and have never had so many compliments yet didn't feel too over dressed with the converse
( I usually wear a Boden sweatshirt and jeans as standard non work clothes)

OOlivePenderghast · 15/04/2023 22:02

Im a very similar age and build. I’m really enjoying all the ideas but wondered if anyone had any pictures (or insta accounts) of what they’re describing. I’m finding it hard to imagine the type of tops which would go with wide leg jeans.

Mirabai · 15/04/2023 22:08

Skims have some good basic cotton stretch tops in different colours.

ShowUs · 15/04/2023 22:08

You can’t go wrong with skinny jeans and a nice top.

Some wide legged trousers look ok but most look awful I find.

A nice dress with thick tights always looks nice too.

Both can be worn with ankle boots.

TomatoSandwiches · 15/04/2023 22:10

Brora has a good selection of single block coloured tops and their cashmere is decent too.
Mint velvet, Reiss, Whistles, all have selections worth having a look at.

JaneJeffer · 15/04/2023 22:14

Nothing. Everyone still wears them.

3WildOnes · 15/04/2023 22:14

Midi dress, trainers & a leather jacket.

mycatsanutter · 15/04/2023 22:16

@LethargeMarg that sounds a nice outfit , just looked for it , is it a greeny coloured one at £35 ?

These are brilliant!

I wear them with a black silk shirt tucked in & metallic trainers. They would look good with a T-shirt though.
