What has replaced skinny jeans and a nice top?

Friday night at the pub is just one example, but I guess what I’m after is what has replaced ‘skinny jeans and a nice top’.

I’m ok with casual, and I’m ok with properly dressy, but I really struggle with the in between.

Im early 30s, busty, size 10, short with a stomach that means anything cropped is out.

Don’t like wearing heels, a heeled boot is ok.

All inspiration welcome but generally prefer lowish budget, I’m lost!

I’ve looked on ASOS but can’t even find a ‘nice top’ they would go with mom jeans.

I just can't imagine spending £50 on a t shirt! Especially if youre getting them in different colours. Plenty of shops do well fitting cotton with stretch t shirts for under £10.

For the last few years it has definitely been printed midi dress (usually dark background with animal/star/floral print) in my group. I look dreadful in them so have stuck to jeans and nice top but am usually the only one.

Then jeans came back but mom style which tbh look pretty terrible on most actual mums. More recently, high waisted wide leg which look good if you have a small waist but not ideal if not. Lots of straight leg jeans around now too which are less high fashion than wide leg but more wearable.

Lots of blouses around as the nice top option. Often a bit lacy/Victorian style.

Basically I’d say whatever form of jeans suits your figure plus an updated nice top.

Why do you need to be told what to wear?

This is what I hate about 'fashion', having some ridiculous unwritten rule telling you what you must wear if you want to be accepted in society! Ffs just wear what you like.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no hippy! Far from it. But if I see something I like in the shops, I wear it. I couldn't care less if it's 'in fashion' or not. Thankfully this means I've never had to squeeze my legs into skinny jeans....!

When I went to a gig recently on the whole the younger women (20s-40s) were in wide legged trousers/skinny tops or jumpsuits, those my age (50s) upwards mostly in midi or shorter dresses. (I have been pondering this question myself so made a point of looking!)

I want to be told because I have no fashion sense!

I liked ‘skinny jeans and nice top’ because it was so easy and almost a ‘uniform’.

I’m not the kind of person who can curate a good outfit, so need to steal other peoples ideas.

I think it’s true about the bottom half being more interesting now.

I went to the pub last night in a pair of Zara cream wide legged trousers and a fitted black Me& Em top plus New Balance trainers in cream/neutral. You couldn’t really see the trainers.

Other current favourite outfit is flared jeans and a silk shirt plus tan boots. A bit 70s.

I do find footwear tricky at the moment. Looking forward to being able to wear sandals as that makes everything easier.

I’m also going to buy some more cargos and pair with a silk vest in the summer.
Just bought a lovely puff sleeved, cream denim jumpsuit from Other Stories. Not sure what footwear with that thought.

Lots of teenagers in baggy jeans and crop tops round here. Not a look I can pull off!

Hellenabe · 16/04/2023 11:07

I'm a lot bigger than you but I like the wide legged look and a fitted top plus trainers.

Obviously, Style & Beauty really isn’t a place for you so. Without such questions as the OP’s there would be no need for a S&B forum, would there ?

I wear skinny jeans, a cricket jumper/occasionally a checked shirt and trainers to the pub. Summer it's shorts and a top or tshirt with sandals or converse. I can't be doing with dressing up for a pub.

Can I ask what sort of fitted tops? I also have large bust and slim legs, and love the look of wide leg trousers but always feel they make me look bigger, maybe it’s the type of top I’m wearing with it?

I try and get my chest or arms out - so I look for things like 'sweetheart neck' or 'square neck' tops or bodysuits as they tend to be fitted with those necklines (has to be tall section to fit the boobs in though!) I think ribbed tops work really well, very flattering. I personally avoid anything with wide sleeves or 'flutter' sleeves, however a bigger sleeve that is tight again around the cuff can be very flattering.
The wide leg trousers need to be high waist really, a lot of the time with a belt. Might sound counterproductive but if you sit inbetween sizes in trousers and they are high waisted with opportunity for a belt, go for the bigger size as a slightly bigger trouser belted makes your waist look smaller!

I agree. Better to wear skinny jeans and nice top than leggings under dress 😬

But my skinny legs get cold! 🥶😂

Maybe opaque tights? But don't mind me, as long as you're feeling comfortable. I'm not fond of leggings, maybe that's why. I only accept them at home and at the gym.

The thing about fashion is that if you wear what you want to and like, eventually you'll be in 'fashion'.

Mamabear48 · 17/04/2023 19:39

I got some really nice mom jeans from new look (tori I think they are called) and wore them with a bandeau bodysuit and sandal short chunky heels and a cropped blazer

I am pushing 50 and have recently decided that I’ll wear what I want, and what I’m comfy in, being fashionable is just to impress others IMO.

I like skinny jeans. I think they are flattering. I used to wear bootleg jeans when I was younger but I don't think they are particularly flattering. They are a bit mumsy. I've seen people (younger than me) in baggyish jeans recently and, to be honest, they all look a bit frumpy.

Agree with this. Skinny jeans are pretty much still a 'thing' everywhere other than Mumsnet.

Bootcut are frump city.

Mirabai · 17/04/2023 19:51

Current flares aren’t bootcut.

LadyMuckingabout · 17/04/2023 19:54

What straight jeans are good? I would look a right clown in flares, but the straight jeans I’ve seen are so frumpy, like dad jeans.

Also what if you are chunky of leg? In a T-shirt and jeans I always look like a trucker or roadie Sad

SirChenjins · 17/04/2023 20:18

I’ve got straight jeans from Next - shape and lift or something. They’re very good on my shape. I’d like a wider pair though, but not too wide.

LadyMuckingabout · 17/04/2023 20:25

I got some Not Your Daughter’s Jeans from a charity shop. Size 2 Grin -talk about vanity sizing!! They are rather too pricey new, and the ones available on eBay atm are rather skanky-looking.

Goodyetalso · 17/04/2023 20:59

I can’t get my head around wearing trainers on a night out. I have spent my entire life feeling like my legs look short and stumpy without heels (well, not so much feeling as KNOWING) and I feel so ugly and dumpy with trainers on with nice clothes - fine for casual during the day but I don’t have the racehorse legs and youthful skinny body to pull them off for the evening. Is there another type of shoe that would work with wide leg trousers for a night out?

Phos · 17/04/2023 21:06

I wasn't aware skinny jeans and a nice top had been replaced? Should I have received a memo?

Delatron · 17/04/2023 21:11

I think a chunky loafer would work well with a wide leg trouser. And a thick soled sandal in summer.

MysteryBelle · 17/04/2023 21:20

Wide legged trousers have to be subtle in the cut to be flattering. Too wide makes legs look short and overwhelmed in fabric. I like those better than bootcut though. So subtle wide leg with cute platform sandals in a groovy 70s pattern and an a-line eyelet tank in white for instance. Cropped cotton jacket. That’s where you can do something cropped. That’s what I’d want anyway 😀
