What has replaced skinny jeans and a nice top?

Friday night at the pub is just one example, but I guess what I’m after is what has replaced ‘skinny jeans and a nice top’.

I’m ok with casual, and I’m ok with properly dressy, but I really struggle with the in between.

Im early 30s, busty, size 10, short with a stomach that means anything cropped is out.

Don’t like wearing heels, a heeled boot is ok.

All inspiration welcome but generally prefer lowish budget, I’m lost!

I’ve looked on ASOS but can’t even find a ‘nice top’ they would go with mom jeans.

Nothing. Everyone still wears them.

Well this is true too!

Mushroo · 15/04/2023 22:20

Thanks everyone! Keep the suggestions coming. Sadly my budget is more H&M / Zara / mango than reiss but I like looking at the more expensive options for inspiration.

Instagram accounts would also be amazing as I find it hard to visualise. I always worry about a fitted top and wide leg trousers I’ll get a tyre in the gap between my bra and the trousers but I should give it a go.

im also not opposed to skinnies but can’t find any decent tops.

My casual night in a pub outfit is now mini/midi dress, black tights and doc martins (or, h&m equivalent)

Depending on weather, I sometimes pop a jumper on other the top and then tuck it up/under

EntreMummy · 15/04/2023 22:40

I’ve just bought the Boden Richmond high waisted cropped trousers (discount code, I’d stopped shopping at Boden and this is first thing I’ve bought from there in ages)

they are gorgeous trousers - super high quality fabric and really flattering. I got Petite size 10 so the length is perfect (I’m also short)
now thinking about getting a second pair

Hi @Mushroo i lived in my Top Shop skinny jeans for years. I've replaced my skinny jeans with M&S jeggings 👌
I'd get a top from River Island or Next.

Mirabai · 15/04/2023 22:49

Zara high waist skinny flare +

Zara top

or

Zara loose linen shirt +

Zara high rise jeans

High rise jeans are good for muffin tops.

minidancer · 15/04/2023 22:52

@mirabai I love that white top from zara. It would look great with flared jeans and some block heeled tan sandals or converse

Skims have some good basic cotton stretch tops in different colours.

https://skims.com/collections/long-sleeve-shirts

Why would you pay around £70 for a plain long-sleeved t shirt though?

GoldenCagedBird · 15/04/2023 23:45

I have found that the nice too isn’t really a thing any more. The bottom half is now the nice bit.

I now have a good array of black and neutral tops from topshop and h and m that are in in the basics aisle. Accessorise with layered jewellery and great earrings. Flares or wide legged trousers or jeans. Or mom jeans.

chaosmaker · 15/04/2023 23:58

@Mushroo just wear what suits you?

cherish123 · 16/04/2023 00:48

I like skinny jeans. I think they are flattering. I used to wear bootleg jeans when I was younger but I don't think they are particularly flattering. They are a bit mumsy. I've seen people (younger than me) in baggyish jeans recently and, to be honest, they all look a bit frumpy.

I went on a (rare) big night out a few weeks ago and panic bought a maxi type leopard print dress from next and the model in the photo wore it with converse so I copied that and added a leather jacket and have never had so many compliments yet didn't feel too over dressed with the converse
( I usually wear a Boden sweatshirt and jeans as standard non work clothes)

Do you have a link to this dress please @LethargeMarg ?

Mushroo · 16/04/2023 07:34

@Niftythrifter @Mirabai thank you! I love some of these.

I think the point about bottom half now being the ‘interesting’ part of an outfit is probably true and I need to change my mindset!

@3WildOnes agree! I went on a hen do to Mamma Mia the party and the vast majority of the audience were wearing this and looked lovely.

I find tight skins style tops and wide legged trousers incredibly unflattering on me and my apple shape body that’s very wobbly.

GoneTillNovember · 16/04/2023 07:47

Interesting thread. I gave up on 'jeans and a nice top' a few years ago as I just couldn't find anything. I swapped to dresses and tights so now have masses of them instead.

I have worn leather-look leggings and floaty top once or twice for a change and although it looked nice I'm too conscious of my tummy 😩 I think like dresses as they don't cling to my stomach - it's impossible to find trousers that are comfortable and flattering.

AlwaysGinPlease · 16/04/2023 07:57

I love my skinny jeans so many pairs and I can't stop buying them and I don't care what's in or out. If I like something then I wear it.

Wide leg and a fitted top!! As a fellow bust gal i've actually been shocked by how much more flattering it is.

Can I ask what sort of fitted tops? I also have large bust and slim legs, and love the look of wide leg trousers but always feel they make me look bigger, maybe it’s the type of top I’m wearing with it?

Clarabell77 · 16/04/2023 08:06

I would just keep wearing your skinny jeans if you like them.

I am similar to you, big bust and slim legs, I recently started wearing midi skirts and have found them quite flattering - ones that are more straight than A line seem to look better.

They’re mostly around £50 not £70. Because they’re cotton with a good amount of stretch, they fit well, and come in many colours.

The current skinny flares are much more flattering than bootleg. And if you’re short as I am they give you height if you wear them over heels.

£50 for a plain long sleeve t-shirt is a lot of money!

V neck A line Jersey type material dress, midi with leggings and ankle boots or maxi with sandals.

Wide leg linen trousers, silky V neck, again A line vest top with as little detail as possible.

High rise flared jeans/70 style with fine knit top, rolled and tucked in at the waist slash neck, and bell sleeves, either with chucks, wedges or boots, really versatile.

Or same cut jeans with a viscose floaty top.

@TomatoSandwiches

nooooooo!
no leggings under dresses!
so dated
