(bag needs to be big enough for a breast pump- this would be a fashion item so looking at under £50, Zara/mango price range.)

I want to dress the dress down rather than up. Was keen to wear it with trainers but the champagne colour of the dress looks off with my existing dad trainers or white gazelles. I think that look would be better with a black or bold coloured dress and doesn’t work here.

any ideas?

i’m 29 if that’s in any way relevant

Is it for a specific occasion / event?

BananaSpanner · 09/04/2023 20:08

I would wear that with slippers and a dressing gown.

This. I think that would look perfect with the dress

LadyKenya · 09/04/2023 20:10

Same here. A quilted dressing gown would look grand with that dress.

Birkenstocks… clogs and ankle socks if you’re brave enough and a mohair cardigan, either oversized or cropped

ImANameChanger01 · 09/04/2023 20:41

denim or leather jacket, or a wool jumper on top.
chunky trainers or DM type boots would dress that down.
sorry can’t help with the bag

It’s for my hen do.

Bridesmaids have ordered me to wear a white/cream dress on one evening- but we absolutely will not be going anywhere where strappy shiny sandals and a wedding guest style clutch will be the vibe.

It’s the colour that’s throwing me- I have a black slip dress (very similar to the above) that look great with retro new balance trainers or more sleek white leather ones, but it just looks a bit odd with the cream shade of the dress.

Thank you for a sensible suggestion. I was looking at some swedish hasbeens earlier.

I have experimented by putting a black tee under the dress but I don’t have the perfect one for it. The neckline looks off.

It looks like a nightie, sorry. I can't accessorise it because I'm thinking nightie nightie nightie.

Angeldelight50 · 09/04/2023 21:24

Chunky boots and an oversized biker jacket? Although not sure this would fit with your style.

Re the bag, have you tried Vinted? I hate buying brand new occasion bags that I know I’ll never wear again!

FWIW satin slip dresses/skirts are popular, OP won’t look like she’s wandered out in her pjs.

JackGrealishsLegs · 09/04/2023 21:29

What about a belt with it, maybe a chain one? To lessen the nightie vibe?
Maybe flatform sandals and a blazer, and for the bag something with a top handle, rather than a clutch bag.

It very much looks like something you're... not supposed to wear ANY underwear underneath!
Save it for the wedding night when it will be appreciated for ten seconds before you both collapse with exhaustion? ;)

I honestly don’t think there is a ‘nightie vibe’ that needs to be lessened. It’s a satin slip dress. I have two in my wardrobe and saw at
least four out last night in varying hues. I’m just really struggling to style the cream shade of it. My old faithful clompy boots look jarringly black and just…odd

But I do like the idea of a chain belt anyway, and a top handle bag would be a nice addition to my accessories as I don’t have one! Thank you 😊

It’s a nightie not a dress.

Christmascracker0 · 09/04/2023 21:38

I’ve seen some wearing a knotted t shirt over the top - would that work? Maybe like a graphic tee, chunky dad sandal and cross body bag? If you search ‘slip dress casual’ on insta there’s some good inspo!

I also think simple slides with a big clutch would be cool. Maybe one of those big straw clutches? And big denim jacket or khaki shacket!

nope, it’s definitely a dress

Many congratulations.

So it’s for evening wear but the venue (beach? restaurant? club? is a mystery - could be all 3?)

Depends if you need heels / height - flatforms in neutral colour / material or bright coloured pumps? Tricky.

(PS: I absolutely love the chocolate version of that dress - I can’t wear cream tho)

'Did I post in AIBU or something?'

Sorry, it’s looking though you’ve attracted the same audience that were smirking at the Vivienne Westwood on Wogan with Sue Lawley interview.
Here are a few ideas. In the 90’s it would be a cropped mohair jumper over a slip dress but a longer, bigger sweater looks more now. Slides, biker boots or slip ons rather than heels would also probably work better for 'dressing down'

Something like this of you want to draw down the satin with rustic / raw contrast texture

I imagine it will be something hen-ish like a cocktail making class, then out for some more drinks.

I love the idea of knitwear for day to day, and might use a big longline jumper as my ‘coat’ for going car to bar

Flatforms in a neutral colour may be a good shout. I like the pull and bear ones linked. I have some lace up doc marten sandals somewhere…they might actually work great. But the black and cream are just clashing to me. But I may be wrong.

Thanks for your post!

These are great day looks but they have given me the idea of wearing a jumper as my ‘coat’ for staying warm between moving around.

do you think black shoes are ok or would you keep it neutral?
