What shoes (and bag?) with this

(bag needs to be big enough for a breast pump- this would be a fashion item so looking at under £50, Zara/mango price range.)

I want to dress the dress down rather than up. Was keen to wear it with trainers but the champagne colour of the dress looks off with my existing dad trainers or white gazelles. I think that look would be better with a black or bold coloured dress and doesn’t work here.

any ideas?

i’m 29 if that’s in any way relevant

I personally like the 'hard' black contrast with the 'softer' cream satin, but agree it can initially look quite 'jarring'
Love @Ooolaaaala suggestion of a rustic rattan contrast shoe. Perhaps, a rattan/black sandal could work? You could then have a bigger, slouchy black bag

I would wear that with slippers and a dressing gown.

Yup! My thought exactly.

It's not too forgiving if your breast feeding and you leak.

It’s fine with a bra and some pads in, so don’t worry about that. I would haven’t selected it if it didn’t work for me…

Oh my god, enough with the fucking nightie comments, it's not funny and just makes you look mean and unoriginal.

These dresses are everywhere and for those who have sunken into a Joules heavy middle age, can you remember Courtney Love, Kate Moss et al wearing these in the 90s and probably 00s too?

Sorry OP I don't have any advice to add but was reading through this morning and got really pissed off!

TheNinjaWife · 10/04/2023 07:39

Personally I’d pick a bag first, you need something that will not catch the fabric of the dress. If you found a bag with turquoise and silver for example you could team with silver sandals and turquoise cardigan. Or something like this …
and wear with a denim jacket

Yes...and Courtney Love looked like she was wearing a nightie. As did Kate Moss.

YoshimisMum · 10/04/2023 07:44

@Iwantthepenthouse
Yes, I was just thinking the same.
I have seen some (what I personally think) are shockingly boring, bland and style free suggestions on Mumsnet but I wouldn’t dream of posting so negatively about them. I just don’t understand why some posters think they are making such witty, insightful comments when they are just being snarky, unhelpful and rude.
OP has responded with confidence in the ‘look’ she wants to achieve but I could see a more timid poster having their ideas ridiculed and beaten out of them rather than encouraged with comments that may actually help

Fine, who cares.

LizzieBrooks · 10/04/2023 08:00

Don’t have any suggestions on styling it but just wanted to say it’s a great dress! Perfect for a hen party IMO. I can imagine the kind of dresses that the people saying it needs a quilted dressing gown are wearing.

EllaPaella · 10/04/2023 08:06

You could wear with black converse high-tops? Love the ideas already suggested.

Netaporter · 10/04/2023 08:07

I think finding a belt which can work on a bias cut dress would be difficult without puckering the fabric. I’d embrace the 90’s vibe and go with neutral coloured clogs (Zara have some) or maybe a low cowboy boot. Or a thong mule. You need to go barely there or clumpy I’d say but the length of the dress is a tricky one. Do champagne/off white Vejas not work? I’ve got some champagne suede Stan smiths that would deffo go with that dress. A slouchy biker style jacket in a similar colour to the shoe would work. And maybe a long fringed shoulder bag?

Have a great time at your hen do and may there not be a penis straw in sight….

EllaPaella · 10/04/2023 08:09

This outfit looks lovely

Sorry I meant superstars not Stan smiths. There are some fab ones on eBay with a rose gold metallic toe too.

pictoosh · 10/04/2023 08:23

Personally I'd put it with a fake fur jacket or mohair bolero and clompy boots...docs for example.

Trendingtopic · 10/04/2023 08:28

I think the issue is you do get night dresses like this and the nightdress came first, so to speak.

That's not the issue because these slip dresses have been around for years as posters well know.

They just want a chance to be snarky and bitchy.

It's not constructive advice like it's not flattering or the colour doesn't suit you.

ToEllewithIt · 10/04/2023 08:49

Good grief some of the responses on here. The first was funny, but talk about flogging a dead horse.

What about a shirt over it, maybe knotted? I like the belt and shoe choices in image 2 to dress it down.

DarkNecessities · 10/04/2023 08:54

I agree about wearing a loose shirt over. Either knotted or undone.

A chunky sandal or Birkenstock in gold or black.

An oversized bag, also metallic that would come in useful day to day

Possibly cream ankle boots?

DarkNecessities · 10/04/2023 08:56

I think tan suede western type calf boots would look fab too with an oversized tan bag and over shirt

BitOutOfPractice · 10/04/2023 08:58

I love @EllaPaella’s suggested look. Have you got any boots that aren’t black? I wish I could wear this, it’s a lovely dress and I think you’ll wear it loads afterwards too.

i know I’m going to sound like your mom but what will you do about a bra? If I recall, nursing / maternity bras don’t have the nicest look for this sort of dress. Im sure you’ve got that covered.

and yes, nightie comments, well done everyone, aren’t you clever? I mean, imagine the nerve of someone wearing something that’s not from White Stuff eh?

finally @GoldenCagedBird congratulations on your wedding and enjoy your hen!

BridaBrida · 10/04/2023 08:59

The nightie talk is tedious.

I’d personally wear it with this bomber from Zara with black high top converse. I also think your lace up doc sandals would work perfectly with a khaki shacket/oversized shirt like this. For a bag, I’d do something like this to offset the casualness of the jacket and shoes.

amymel2016 · 10/04/2023 09:00

So much jealousy!!

it’s lovely OP and I love the baggy jumper/flatform ideas
