Cross body / small bag - help me not look like my mother

So I’ve had a lovely taupe small cross body bag for years (very similar to a Chloe bag). Suddenly I believe it’s very frumpy looking. I was at a festival last year and I think people were sniggering at it.

what’s a more up to date version of the cross body bag - style wise ones ?

Usually people at festivals look like they dressed from the back of the charity shop! The entire point is to wear any old shit you like. Who on earth was laughing at your bag?

The cos cross body bag is what I believe all the kids are wearing. A few influencers I follow have them and they’re nearly always sold out

I'd imagine they weren't laughing at your bag, however you're not alone in feeling frumpy in a cross body bag, I'm in my 20's as well! I've never been able to pull one off.

I really can’t imagine anyone laughing at a bag unless it was hugely weird!

I like the Cos one but an Instagram influencer said it was the Uniqlo cross body everyone was going mad for:

It's similar to the Cos one but polyester so more casual and in lots of pretty colours.

This uniqlo one is also 'viral' as the kids say and such a bargain

I got one in Primark. It's actually an ordinary bag that's quite small and has a long strap. It's purple and I love it. But I'm probably more your mother's age than yours ;)

I have 3 of those Uniqlo bags, I absolutely love them and they hold a ton of shite. I'm positively elderly according to my kids though so what do I know? 😀

I love a cross body bag and just replaced a favourite from Hush which has finally fallen apart with a simple black padded one from Zara.

No idea if it’s cool or will get laughed at (can’t believe people really did that) I just went for something from a shop that’s not generally used by the elderly and that I liked too.

My DD (very trendy 20yo) likes the look of the Uniqlo bag .
Me (ancient and untrendy) was thinking "Oh if I got the pink one I wonder if it washes ?"

I think how you wear a cross-body has changed in that the strap is shorter an the bag is worn more across the chest than at the hip. Personally I think it would feel cumbersome worn at chest, but that's old fashioned me.

And you must have been imagining that the laughter was directed at you. Seriously.

Exactly @mdinbc cross body bags are worn almost as tight as bum bags accords the chest these days

The Uniqlo one went viral about 6 weeks ago so is probably already unfashionable 🤣

Personally I love a camera bag or a big old boho style bag with long and short strap so you can choose. I think a black or bright are better than taupe or navy for looking younger.

we were at a festival that is mostly for the young - we were the oldest there I think. I can confirm that the sniggering was directed at my bag.

I’m 47 so not ancient but my mother is 80. I could do with not looking too similar to her.

Sling packs are where it's at. I'm 43 and just bought a TomToc sling.
Love it. Holds everything and is so comfortable. Like a backpack crossed with a cross body crossed with a messenger bag.

I tried one of the sling bags, but my rather large bosoms got in the way and it didn't feel comfortable at that height on my torso!

Just a plain old leather crossbody lower down will do, but I'm ancient and don't care.

I'm with you. I buy bags I like the look of and know will last a while. Black, tan or a bright colour but not navy or taupe.
