What shoes should a 40yo wear with this outfit?

Orange jumper and navy wide leg trousers in a short length so they look cropped around the ankle.

Do I go for trainers? Navy ballet pumps? Something else?!

Please god, not ballet pumps! Trainers are fine.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 10/02/2023 23:11

If you want shoes rather than trainers, platform loafers might work

😁 What colours trainers do you think?

I think for a 40-yr old (not old!) those trousers are a mistake. Not the wide-legged part (unless you're very short, maybe) but the drawstring part. It looks sort of sad and old-ladyish / small-childish to me when the ties of your trousers are visible. Unless it's PJs. Or you're on holiday. In which case no shoes or slippers or flip-flops would be fine.

Could you find something similar that's a bit more structured?

I vote trainers, ballet pumps are dated

EyesOnThePies · 10/02/2023 23:54

Something chunky.

And trainers are ugly.

I love these authoritative proclamations that ballet pumps are dated when only a few months ago Vogue, The Times and others were raving about ballet pumps.

That link gives me black trousers

Galadriel90 · 11/02/2023 00:17

Hi op I have those trousers! I'm also 40 plus so apologies to the poster that thinks they look sad Biscuit

I wear mine with white leather trainers. They also look good with a blazer worn open.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2023 08:27

Sad and old ladyish
Oh, do fuck off dear.

Leather trainers would be good. Or for work, maybe block heeled suede ankle boots?

Yes Vogue are advocating ballet pumps for the fashion-forward, designer crowd.

OP, with respect, is not that crowd. She's asking for advice on an extremely tame M&S ensemble, no one will read her as fashion-forward and chic if she wears ballet pumps with that outfit. They will read her as dated. Get real.

But also has said she is choosing navy, so you can either imaging them in navy or change the colour on the link?

BettyBoo123456 · 11/02/2023 09:25

Some nasty comments on here sorry OP.

I am mid to late 50’s and certainly no fashionista but I would wear what you fancy maybe loafers or trainer type shoes.

Positivitie · 11/02/2023 09:26

Thanks all I’ll look out for some leather trainers, I’m guessing in white or navy?

This outfit isn’t for work but for leisure, I feel I’ve lost my way a bit after lockdown and failed IVF. I feel drab so just want to smarten up a bit now I’ve turned 40.

Ballet pumps aren't dated - they'll be all over the place this spring/summer.

Having said that my bunions can't cope with them so I'd go for trainers, Adidas Gazelles could be good and are having a moment, or maybe some New Balance in a neutral colour.

BettyBoo123456 · 11/02/2023 09:32

Sorry about your loss OP. I like a bright colour to brighten myself up too. Be kind to yourself and stride out in your new outfit. Maybe get some trainers with some other bright colours in that you like and you can wear with other outfits too. Take care x

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2023 09:33

I wouldn't wear the trousers cropped.
Ballet slippers are only ok if there is some arch support.

I'd wear something like NB trainers

Exactly what I was thinking reading that drivel 🤣

I'd probably wear white trainers OP or if you want shoes there's lots of chunky loafers around at the moment which would work.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2023 09:41

Agree the trousers would be better full length. Hope you find something you like OP.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 11/02/2023 09:46

Just a word of warning re ballet pumps, I used to wear them loads, every day but I developed plantar fasciitis after doing this and I think if you do wear them then alternate every other day with more supportive shoes.

Fit flop did do a patent ballet pump.

Nope, they will see some one not wearing trainers. Get real.

TheDead · 11/02/2023 09:47

I wore wide legged trousers not unlike these a lot last Summer & I wore new balance trainers with mine. I have several pairs of them in different colours so depending on occasion & my mood i varied them.

I bought 3 pairs of wide leg trousers in mint velvet. I got lots of wear out of them but not sure yet if I'll wear them as much this year.

I would only wear them full length though.
I have other wide leg cropped trousers from whistles which i have literally worn to death!

I'm thinking slim cigarette trousers this spring / Summer

Not a lot of respect in your comment though.

Why not go out and be a total bitch to peoples faces about their outfits,? Should be fun, eh?

OP I think that's a great outfit. I think some leather trainers would work well.
