What shoes should a 40yo wear with this outfit?

Orange jumper and navy wide leg trousers in a short length so they look cropped around the ankle.

Do I go for trainers? Navy ballet pumps? Something else?!

I am unsure why your age has any relevance?

In all truthfulness an orange viscose and polyamide zig zag stamped jumper would need to have been designed and produced by much cooler people than M&S employ in order not to seem vaguely tragic.

But I’m sure I’ve made plenty of style choices the OP might find horrific … Grin🤷🏽‍♀️

Have you read why the OP needs cheering up?

And you still see fit to post this?

You’re coming across really badly.

OP I have white Stan Smiths with a navy trim that would look great with your new outfit.

LivesinLondon2000 · 11/02/2023 12:31

Agree with ballet flats not being quite there yet (as well as being not that comfortable to wear imo).
I remember the fashion mags saying flares were back in about 2014 and one of my very fashion-forward friends wearing a pair. Despite her looking great in them (she’s tall & slim & looks great in anything) they just still seemed ‘wrong’ and it’s taken a fair few more years for them to be completely mainstream again.

I got these recently.

Love these

Soulstirring · 11/02/2023 13:08

Why cropped out of interest? I’d wear white Veja trainers (as I own a pair) with the longer length and maybe pumps with the cropped.

it’s a nice outfit. I had similar trousers from M&S with a crease down the front but I daren’t wear them. I should.

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2023 13:12

I like the Nikes too, but I like bright or eye-catching shoes. I was thinking something like these but more orange

Not sure about the Ecco ones. I can't quite not think orthopaedic.

I like M&S. Not everything they do but a lot of it and the food

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2023 13:12

oops
schuh

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2023 13:13

@Soulstirring , wear them or chuck em my direction if they're an 8 and have pockets

M&S do acrylic very well. Their active wear is good too.

SpacePotato · 11/02/2023 13:18

Why on earth would you buy trousers purposely in a length that is too short for you?
Those are meant to be full length, to sit on your shoes, not look like you're grown out of them.

I would wear trainers. They don't have to be white.

Soulstirring · 11/02/2023 13:45

@KirstenBlest if I were an 8 I’d def be wearing them 🤣 I’m a curvy short legged 12 hence my reluctance!

Blingstar · 11/02/2023 13:55

@Positivitie really like your outfit choice. M&S also have Hoff trainers (usually only sold in Anthropologie).

And a good selection of leather trainers too on M&S.

Blingstar · 11/02/2023 13:56

Meant to link to the ones with a hint of orange...

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2023 14:10

M&S own brand footwear is good too. Looks more £££ than it is.

I've got some wide leg trousers somewhere. I'll dig them out.
I've been told by a few people that I have short legs (inside leg 29" in bare feet and nearly 5'4") so I avoid cropped - the 'Did those trousers shrink?' comments are too annoying.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 11/02/2023 14:13

Sorry, op but i think the trousers look a bit dated.
However, i would add that ballet pumps are back in fashion and the trainer look less so.

QueueEtwo · 11/02/2023 15:23

I really like those trousers & think they will look great with trainers!

Those trainers are fabulous. I want a pair....

Giftwithpurchase · 11/02/2023 16:58

I find it odd all this slagging off of M&S - it's actually been performing well in the fashion stakes for the past few years. I get a lot from there and I would say I'm pretty fashion oriented.
Op treat yourself to a pair of the Hoff trainers, go a size up on the jumper and get the trousers in regular length. Enjoy your new outfit!

Really, why? Wide legged trousers are pretty much ubiquitous across the whole of the High St at the moment so not sure why the OP would look dated. Agree with pp though OP and would get regular length

YoBeaches · 11/02/2023 17:35

Nice outfit Op. I would regularly wear something like this with platform espadrilles. They give me some height, o have 3 pairs, one in camel/beige leather toeless and strap, one in sequins for jazzing up any outfit and one in pale pink. You could get orange or navy or camel to match this outfit and you'll wear them loads.

I vote trainers, ballet pumps are dated

Not any more they're not. They're back!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2023 17:50

I think ballet pumps work better with more narrow, maybe ankle length trousers - like Audrey Hepburn. I think the proportions might look a bit odd with wide-legs.

Quitelikeacatslife · 11/02/2023 17:56

I'm 50 and fat and love my wide leg trousers with stripes down leg, wear with v necked jumpers and trainers (Nike air max) but struggle to think of another footwear option for them , maybe in summer I'll wear with Birkenstocks , but does need to be chunky for me with these pants.
Have some ballet flats I wear with an insert in with fitted slightly cropped trousers , would look awful with long wide trousers

Actually platform espadrilles are a good suggestion. Much nicer than trainers.

Can someone explain trainers to me? There's been several posted on here and, sorry, but for me they're all irredeemably ugly. They might be comfortable, but do you (general you) look at them and think "wow, that looks good?
