Calling those of us who love wearing bright colours/ patterns

At 44, I’ve finally realised that it’s going to take more than a neutral palette for me to look like Amanda from Motherland or daringly French. So I’ve decided to embrace my love of colour and even patterns. This winter ( after a no-spend year), I’ve treated myself to bright cashmere sweaters in berry and green, patterned skirts, a Palava dress, bright tights and a neon pink cashmere beret. I realise I’m skirting perilously close to looking like a kids TV presenter ( although I do dilute with plain tops and footwear, and don’t wear everything at once). But I actually feel so much better about how I look. And, for the first time in years I’m getting complimented on my clothes, and even being told how well I look. Wish I’d given up on Gallic sophistication years ago.

Anyone else love colourful dressing? Any hints and tips for a beginner, or good outlets to try, gratefully received.

Yes, fuck it, life is short. I realised I was depressed when my wardrobe was limited to muted colours when I previously was known for colour.

TwoMagnificentLabradors · 31/12/2022 16:07

Me too! Models look amazing in khaki and grey, but on me I look like I stepped out of a sepia photo, or into a Voldemort
rally. I’m not attention seeking particularly, but those muted colours made me sort of vanish.

I love all those clothes in the links!
I've nothing to share but will be following this post to hopefully see some more colourful gorgeousness.

SlowHorses67 · 31/12/2022 16:17

You might like Justine Tabak dresses, they are similar to Toast but she uses some lovely bright, rich colours. I have an orange corduroy dress by her which always makes me smile. Small British designer, uses cotton and linen. Not cheap but good value over time. I don’t work for her or anything.

WehIstMir · 31/12/2022 16:26

Love your selection and am very tempted by the Palava dogs dress. I like my colourful and comfy dress from Zuri (with pockets!): https://www.shopzuri.com/collections/all?utmsource=google&utmmmedium=cpc&utmcampaign=NE+%7C+Brand+llDE1+3567&utmterm=78214297140-kwd-310886740926&utmmcontent=398528912340&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh-vtaKkkAIVCuvtCh1lrgQFEAAYASAAEgINRfD_BwE

Good for you! It all looks lovely. Classy, expensive. I love patterns and they suit me. A lot of my dresses and tops are patterned, and I am complemented on them.

TwoMagnificentLabradors · 31/12/2022 16:58

Love the Zuri dresses. Beautiful colours!

I have a lovely wooden red coat from Toast from several years ago. I rarely wore it as I thought perhaps it was too much. I’ve scarcely been out if it this winter having decided to embrace the colour. The sun set at 3.48 pm today. Enough with darkness.

And very well organised!

That sounds gorgeous. I airways think of Toast as being more muted, but I love their styles. I had a red frock coat from years ago, but it looks sadly dated now ( and I’ve gained weight). I’d love another red coat.

I literally dress like a kid tv presenter or a toddler who has been allowed to choose there own clothes, colour and patterns make me happy.

dudsville · 31/12/2022 17:32

Your qoute "But I actually feel so much better about how I look. And, for the first time in years I’m getting complimented on my clothes, and even being told how well I look." made me smile @TwoMagnificentLabradors . It took the pandemic for me to have the headspace to dress how I want. Initially I felt like a teenager again putting together outfits I loved rather than wearing stuff out of habit and no time, energy or bravery to branch out. I feel so much happier!

Brontosaurus · 31/12/2022 17:54

I asked DH for this Paisie dress for my birthday this year. It's the nicest, brightest dress I own and I love it. But it hasn't been warm enough to wear it yet so for now it's tucked away.

I love colour! Yellows, pinks, oranges and greens are my favourite. I mix and match with denim and prints. I buy from lots of places, but mainly H&M, Oliver Bonas and various brands at John Lewis.

Sickoffamilydrama · 31/12/2022 18:37

I've always been a lover of colour and I'm my happiest in a vibrant coloured outfit.
My colouring is winter so I have been embracing stark white & black.

My favourites are bright reds, pinks and greens I've been eyeing up the same hush jumper as you OP

Spanielsarepainless · 31/12/2022 18:40

I got so many compliments when I wore a violet cashmere jersey and a turquoise scarf. Grey jeans and black boots though.

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2022 18:47

I love colour, patterns not so much. I wouldn't enjoy a muted, neutral wardrobe. I wouldn't feel like me.

This is basically me 😄

Always4Brenner · 31/12/2022 18:49

Love the colours on the first two items though very expensive the last one didn’t come up for me. I’m wanting cardigan’s in bright colours too.

Sickoffamilydrama · 31/12/2022 18:58

This is the colour pallette I like the most I have bought outside of this but then find I don't wear it as much as it doesn't suit me.

Justbetweenus · 31/12/2022 18:59

I love the plum coat over pink 3rd link). Mixing within a colour family looks great! I’ve stopped buying black and also try and wear more brights.

Always4Brenner · 31/12/2022 19:05

Love this colour palette some gorgeous colours there I’ll wear them especially the brightest ones.

Shitfather · 31/12/2022 19:09

I absolutely love colour. I tend to wear colourful coats and jackets. My fave designers are Sea New York and Horror Vacui. They produce such unique and beautifully crafted pieces.

Montague22 · 31/12/2022 19:09

I love wearing all black.
However, I get so many compliments if I wear bright red, fuchsia and cobalt blue. I don’t wear them often at all but always get a few compliments when I do. I’m less keen on print.
I think I’m a winter too. I’m going to follow this anyway.
