At 44, I’ve finally realised that it’s going to take more than a neutral palette for me to look like Amanda from Motherland or daringly French. So I’ve decided to embrace my love of colour and even patterns. This winter ( after a no-spend year), I’ve treated myself to bright cashmere sweaters in berry and green, patterned skirts, a Palava dress, bright tights and a neon pink cashmere beret. I realise I’m skirting perilously close to looking like a kids TV presenter ( although I do dilute with plain tops and footwear, and don’t wear everything at once). But I actually feel so much better about how I look. And, for the first time in years I’m getting complimented on my clothes, and even being told how well I look. Wish I’d given up on Gallic sophistication years ago.

Anyone else love colourful dressing? Any hints and tips for a beginner, or good outlets to try, gratefully received.

Marimekko is also good for patterns and colours. Good quality, but a bit pricey.

I’m rediscovering colour after years in a wilderness of black due to having been massively overweight. Happy to say this is no longer the case and right now I’m wearing this Girl in Mind dress…wearing it with black tights but I’ve also worn in bare legged with the obligatory white trainers on holiday amd loved it!

They are very colourful but not really my style, I prefer less kitschy.

MySaladDaysAreGone · 01/01/2023 21:57

You are my kindred spirit!

Olivia Rubin is great if you love colour, can be very spendy but have found some huge bargains in her sale, the flannels sale or in TK Maxx.

Rainbow striped jumper dress fits like a dream and is such good quality. The rainbow Lurex dress was a TK Maxx find and I was very pleased with it!

The amount of colour I’m wearing is generally a great barometer for how happy I am with my life in general.

Also recommended the brand One Hundred Stars for some gorgeous colourful prints, especially the Kew Gardens collection.

I love intense colours, jewel brights look best on me but they are quite hard to find outside of Christmas/party dresses. I'm starting a new job this week and treated myself to a hot pink satin shirt just because I feel so much better in bright colours.
I really don't like patterns on me though, bright solids for me.

yoshiblue · 01/01/2023 22:13

@Brontosaurus I had mine done pre covid, it think it was about £90. I was there for a couple of hours and had my colours matched and make up done. Left with a wallet of swatches to use when shopping too. Lady was lovely and was a nice treat.

If you think if it makes you buy a couple of less 'wrong' items it's well worth it. It makes it so much easier to shop now as I know what colours to look for in shops or filter online.

YourTruthorMine · 01/01/2023 22:16

As a Spring, I have to embrace bright colours, muted tones or pastels do me no favours at all

LovingTheAbbreviations · 01/01/2023 22:21

I’m with you! I love colour! I have bright red hair and I went through a phase of wearing plain things as I realised that highlighted the hair as the main event, but it’s really not me! I picked up the most wonderfully so-hideous-it’s-amazing multicolour print dress the other day and felt so like me again it was great! I’ve had loads of lovely comments about it as well. My husband said “it’s, er, bright!” But now he’s got over the initial shock and popped his sunnies on he agrees that it really suits me. Big up to all the bright, colourful mamas on here!

Deathraystare · 05/01/2023 14:40

I look better in colour (Think I am a bright Spring). Look shite in beige. Need bright coloured lipsticks!

However I avoid rainbow patterns - stripes etc. Just not into the whole rainbow thing.

I would love to have my hair dyed bright red again but too much upkeep to keep it that colour.

NeedWineNow · 05/01/2023 15:58

@Sickoffamilydrama Fabulous colours! Am I right in thinking that's a winter pallette? They are definitely the colours that I lean towards. I always stuck to a lot of black when I was working but now I've retired I'm really embracing colour. In fact I was ealier putting some ironing away and went through my wardrobe (as you do). Got out two black dresses and a muted taupe colour one, all of which weren't the type of shape I wear now, so they went in the charity bag.

I went up the pub the other night in jeans and a really vibrant fuschia soft knit jumper and received lots of compliments which I was a bit chuffed by! I've also starting wearing more prints. I discovered Onjenu when I was looking for a dress for a wedding a couple of years ago. Again really vibrant colours and prints which I love.

Sickoffamilydrama · 31/12/2022 18:58

This is the colour pallette I like the most I have bought outside of this but then find I don't wear it as much as it doesn't suit me.

Hello fellow bright winter!

Personally I love being able to wear acid yellow/lime green in the depths of winter.

I look half dead in muted colours.

Sickoffamilydrama · 05/01/2023 23:38

Hello @Leemoe I don't really wear yellow, live a bit of red, bright pink or green though.

Yes @NeedWineNow a bright winter, interestingly I am into black a little now, I never wore out until recently but it can work with my colouring if it's stark enough the same with white. If I do black though I like a bright lipstick to add some colour.

IndianSummer78 · 06/01/2023 00:04

@Whatthediddlyfeck that's gorgeous.

I love colour and pattern, especially paisley. I love neutrals too but they have to have something about them and not be too basic.

Deathraystare · 06/01/2023 10:28

Oh god I loathe Paisley (it is bloody everywhere!) as much as raimbow stripes!

Still each to there own!

RampantIvy · 06/01/2023 10:40

I had my colours done in the 1980s and was told I was a winter. I then had them done again just before covid and was told I was a jewel winter (back in the 1980s it was just the 4 seasons and they weren't subdivided). The only new revelation was that emerald green was one of my best colours, but everything else was pretty much the same.

I feel that it saves money because I do walk past swathes of clothes that I know won't suit me., and I can never buy clothes in autumn because all the dull, muted autumnal colours look awful on me.

I follow the colour consultant on Facebook and she always looks stunning - she is a jewel winter as well.

On the "how to look chic/expensive" threads posters always repeat the mantra of get a camel coat and wear tan boots and have a tan handbag.

No, no and thrice no!

JennyForeigner · 06/01/2023 12:14

Love those Zuri dresses - I hadn't heard of them before. New clothes #goals.

MintChocCornetto · 06/01/2023 12:27

Hello my people!

I like bright block/solid colour rather than patterns though I have a zebra stripe Nike sweatshirt I wear A LOT. I bought a lime green oversized shirt from New Look at Xmas and wore amy favourite cobalt blue jumper over it and it looked brilliant.

I need to work out what to do with my bottom half though, I tend to go for bright top half and normal jeans underneath.

I'm trying to wear my 'smarter' clothes more often instead of reverting to standard casual wear too. I'd like to branch into coloured trousers but I'm a bit nervous of looking stupid
