Calling those of us who love wearing bright colours/ patterns

At 44, I’ve finally realised that it’s going to take more than a neutral palette for me to look like Amanda from Motherland or daringly French. So I’ve decided to embrace my love of colour and even patterns. This winter ( after a no-spend year), I’ve treated myself to bright cashmere sweaters in berry and green, patterned skirts, a Palava dress, bright tights and a neon pink cashmere beret. I realise I’m skirting perilously close to looking like a kids TV presenter ( although I do dilute with plain tops and footwear, and don’t wear everything at once). But I actually feel so much better about how I look. And, for the first time in years I’m getting complimented on my clothes, and even being told how well I look. Wish I’d given up on Gallic sophistication years ago.

Here are links to a couple of favourites:

Anyone else love colourful dressing? Any hints and tips for a beginner, or good outlets to try, gratefully received.

@NatashaDancing That’s so nice of you. Thank you 😳

OP, love the outfits you linked to. Dull colours (especially white, beige/tan and grey) and make me invisible. I have to wear jewel colours. Some of my clothes are borderline psychedelic.

Compare Kate (who wears brighter colours) with Meghan (who tends to wear neutrals though she is in a gold dress today). Kate stands out.

Oooh so excited to see this thread.
I love colour and find neutrals very boring. I'm in my 50s and I'm a bright spring.
There seems to be a lot of green in the shops right now and I've just added a dress and dungarees to my spring wardrobe and some Teva sandals due to another thread 😆

The JL jumper is lovely! Bright green is much underrated colour IMO. It absolutely lifts me whenever I wear it....

Maireas · 19/05/2023 07:39

Go for it. I love colour! My only black is for funerals and I own nothing in brown, beige or grey. I love red, clear bright green, blue, orange and purple. Not all at once - I tend to wear tonal. People often comment at work that it cheers them up to see me in an emerald green suit and red shoes 😃

Grumpyfroghats · 19/05/2023 07:39

What's the sizing like on the Palava dress? Looks lovely

I couldn't agree more. Such a great colour to wear.

When a working royal, Meghan wore a lot of bright colours and looked amazing. A canary yellow dress, bright purple and red, emerald green, bright blue. I think latterly (apart from the gold!) she's got a more muted wardrobe.

@AnnieSnap - great looks. I love your floral skirt, where's that from?

I've recently developed a new favourite colour of magenta. Lots of lovely magenta clothing. And my hair is dark plum with magenta highlights and a magenta undercolour. Love it!

Thank you 🙂 It’s from Thought, but a few years ago now.

I'd say Palava is more generous than say LK Bennett but less generous than M&S.

Gorgeous! I love magenta.

LadyAstor · 28/06/2023 20:03

I live in neutrals but I'm a blue spring type, so should be embracing vibrant/vivid colours right now, but I'm finding everything is still lacy/frilly/tiered, which just isnt me. I cant do the little girl/waif look.

Anyone seen any bright dresses that are plain/straight cut/unfussy?

MintChocCornetto · 28/06/2023 21:06

@LadyAstor someone on a different thread recommended some African clothing shops and now I am mildly obsessed.

Cumo London and MAD Kollection

I regularly trawl their websites and have since found more shops selling that sort of clothing. Beautiful colours and most is quite structured/tailored and shapeless sacks.

MintChocCornetto · 28/06/2023 21:07

*not shapeless sacks!

For goodness sake....

Count me in. I have found my tribe. Today I was wearing this (admittedly with black trousers):

Oooh lovely colours on this thread I'm a huge fan of colour and pattern, I used to only do block colours or very muted colours, but got so fed up of being very blended, I just thought sod it yolo!! Now my whole wardrobe has very little black in it, or if it does its teamed up with other super bright colours/patterns and I just feel happier!! @Sickoffamilydrama hello you👋 hope you are well? my fellow fashionista😉😊

@SlowHorses67

Those dresses look lovely! Except perhaps the multicolour gingham one that looks like you are using up scraps of material!!!

eveoha · 04/07/2023 18:14

I’ve just bought the M&S Jaeger silk fuschia and orange dress ( from EBay as are the matching shoes - fuschia suede Gabor£10) - just need a fascinator - fuschia and bag and I’m wedding ready 👍🏿🙏🏽 Oh a x skid bagged a Damsel in a dress silk sculptural scarf in orange - took a bit of digging but I never wear ‘bright’ colours and unsure re purchases but by jing I’m so glad I did 😊👍🏿☘️

lindyloo57 · 04/07/2023 18:55

Not sure of my coloring, I was a blonde blue eyed child but went a dull mousey shade early teens, I do suit gold jewellery more then silver so could be a spring, and like a peach not pink lipstick, I wear neutrals a lot, and love animal print, but trying to add more colour, so I just brought from John lewis a bright orange cashmere jumper in the sale £39 a bargain, so I had to buy the black too at that price, and from next sale brought a wool mix striped coloured cardigan.
