Surely now is the time for shawls to make a comeback

Half serious/half joking.

My granny used to have one handy all the time. Cool evenings outside, over her nightie, sitting watching tv in the evenings. I know a cardi does the same but I really fancy a shawl...

yes, very useful for sitting up in bed reading
also fairly easy to knit

leccybill · 31/08/2022 22:15

Oh I've got a lovely wool poncho thing, hope it comes back into style soon!

Lavendersummer · 31/08/2022 22:16

Yes and snoods. Remember them?

AnneLovesGilbert · 31/08/2022 22:21

I love a shawl, have many. And a chunky flowy poncho that I chuck over anything. Fuck fashion, warmth is always in 😉

StolenWillowTree · 31/08/2022 22:25

I refuse to accept that they ever went away. I have some lovely shawls!

I also remember snoods - when I was in primary school I used to buy a snood every winter (which came in a plastic package from the local post office/corner shop) and wear it over my coat to go to school every day.

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/08/2022 22:29

I think you want a proper bed jacket. Quilted sateen with a ribbon trim and padded buttons ideally, and then you can pretend you are a lady of leisure in the 1930s. As opposed to not being able to turn the heating on.

WrinklesShminkles · 31/08/2022 22:31

Seasalt do nice pure wool shawls, I have two - very nice to wrap up in while working or watching TV.

meateatingveggie · 31/08/2022 22:37

I also want a hat like this again. I had one in the early 70s and it was the warmest thing ever.

I loved the pom-poms

I have a big wool Seasalt shawl over the back of my office chair, they are very useful.

This kept me cosy in a cold, very ventilated Covid classroom!

@DelphiniumBlue they are gorgeous!

I know, I've got a deep turquoise one, but think I might need the red or maybe pink. So hard to choose!

Jayneisagirlsname · 31/08/2022 22:49

I want one of these! Saw it at Blists Hill Victorian Museum and it's so beautiful and glamorous.

@DelphiniumBlue I'm so tempted to buy one for my daughter in laws Christmas present. She's a primary teacher and her classroom is cold too

I can't be doing with shawls, they don't stay put well enough - though they look good (and cosy, of course) on other people.

When I was a teenager I used to nab DMs tonags - they're a Scottish version of a poncho, hers had buttons, and were made of mohair. They weren't as large as the ones I can find online now, so were good if you needed to use your hands.

Passmethecrisps · 31/08/2022 22:56

Bloody love a shawl. Love a pashmina as well. I never got past them going out of fashion. Now is my time to shine!

I love omishka! I bought shawls from there for Christmas presents last year and had to get some more so that I could keep 2 for myself 😳 💖

CaptainBarbosa · 31/08/2022 23:03

I have a shawl and I love it, I was gifted it when DS was born, I used to tie him on to me in it and do the house work (a Welsh shawl) now I just use it in the evenings to keep warm, work from home, it makes the odd appearance on teams meetings 🤣

Oh, just realised I've got a purple one of those. I used it as a blanket when watching TV last winter. I originally thought it was a scarf and wore it like that but it's not quite the right dimensions for me. Hadn't thought of it as a shawl 🤭.

Decidualcast · 31/08/2022 23:07

Ahhh this thread has reminded me to pull out my beautiful Orenburg shawls. I have loads of shawls - love them.

clopper · 31/08/2022 23:08

I taught wearing shawls when we had to keep doors and windows open during covid. I feel they might turn the heating down at school due to energy prices so I’ll have to dig them out again I guess.

CaptainBarbosa · 31/08/2022 23:11

This is similar to mine

They aren't cheap but they are so warm and cosy 🤣

Fizbosshoes · 31/08/2022 23:20

I have 2 ponchos. One is a black sort of crochet one, I've had it more than 16 years (I know I had it before my DD was born) and the other is sort of teal blue more close knitted, with really soft pom poms. I bought it from a charity shop about 3 years ago.
I don't especially follow fashion so I have worn them sporadically since I've had them and will continue to make use of them. I wore the teal pom pom one when we could only meet outside due to covid rules and a few people complimented me on it.

Fizbosshoes · 31/08/2022 23:26

My MIL knitted everyone in the family a blanket. They felt too nice (and too much work gone into them) to use all the time and risk the cats pulling them but I think we will use this year esp as she passed away last year so they are a nice keepsake as well as useful (she loved useful presents - we often got roasting tins or cleaning products!🤣)

tobee · 31/08/2022 23:26

I always liked Judy Garland's snood in Meet Me in St Louis:-
