Surely now is the time for shawls to make a comeback

Half serious/half joking.

My granny used to have one handy all the time. Cool evenings outside, over her nightie, sitting watching tv in the evenings. I know a cardi does the same but I really fancy a shawl...

I've just brought from h&m a black wool cashmere poncho

JennieTheZebra · 01/09/2022 17:10

@LuciferRising
That’s called a Sontag shawl. They have a really interesting history www.handylittleme.com/sontag-shawl/

HandbagsnGladrags · 01/09/2022 17:12

Ooh this sounds like just the job for WFH. Where can I get a lovely stylish one?

LuciferRising · 01/09/2022 17:55

Thank you Jennie!

I am now lost down an etsy rabbit hole. May be asking for one for Christmas.

ChilliPB · 01/09/2022 17:59

My only contribution is to say yes, shawl-y now is the time for shawls to make a come back 😅

BestIsWest · 01/09/2022 18:11

I must say I’ve missed scarves and pashminas. May I give a shout out for a cashmere snood. I had one last year and didn’t take it off all winter.

Also reminiscing about Welsh shawls. DM had one just like the one in the link though it was ancient and both my DC were carried Welsh-fashion in it (as was I).

I was carried in, and I carried DS now 8 in one. I'm only 32 😂

My late husband DS's father got jealous and wanted DS wrapped on him. And bless him every Sunday afternoon he'd walk round camp (we were a military family) with DS wrapped on him for a stroll. The other guys wanted to do the same with their babies/toddler. We had a Welsh shawl baby carrying thing going for a bit and the men would walk round on a Sunday afternoon like a moving mother's meeting, and we (the women would get a 20-30minute break. 😂

I also want a hat like this again. I had one in the early 70s and it was the warmest thing ever.

I loved the pom-poms

Here’s your hat!

Surprised about your lack of snoods. Every website I click on has a few. Though it’s all about the balaclava this year.

I think capes are due a return. Maybe in tweed.

Shawls are the perfect garment for so many occasions

Wandering the seashore because your midshipman love is lost at sea - shawl

Stealing into the garden before the servants have awoken, to gather some hemlock to slip into your husband's broth - shawl

Covering your face as you enter the tavern to join the secret Levellers meeting - shawl

Exactly!!!

I do have a writing shawl crocheted for me by a friend, but for me they’re indoor garments. I was living in a famously wet city last time those short ponchos were in fashion, and my students would start the day in one that stopped at the waist and end the day in ankle-length acres of sodden wool.

Madeyoulook · 09/11/2022 17:16

I’ve seen ponchos back in the shops and also the woollen tabard.

This makes me very happy, I've waited since 2004 for ponchos to make a comeback

StrangerOnline · 09/11/2022 17:35

I’ve never stopped wearing scarves and pashminas - obviously have no sense of style as hadn’t even realised they were no longer ‘in’ 🤣

Am I right that a shawl is knitted or crotched, basically made of wool?

What was the Mumsnet scarf of 2011 please?

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 09/11/2022 18:18

I've still got my poncho from 2004 and have worn it whenever I felt like it regardless of it being fashionable!

AuntieMarys · 09/11/2022 18:19

Bring back furry muffs

LuciferRising · 09/11/2022 19:43

Off the back of this thread I started to wear some shawls I had and my mother is knitting me a sontag shawl!

LovelyBitOfSquirrel69 · 09/11/2022 20:05

My lovely husband bought me a Louis Vuitton shawl for my birthday, can be worn so many ways. Love it.

Also, the cashmere fingerless gloves from last year are turning out to be a good investment.

Helenloveslee4eva · 09/11/2022 20:09

I knit. I have shawls / wraps of all sorts. They are great and it’s lovely to know I knitted them

HoHoHowMuch · 09/11/2022 21:22

Did pashminas go out of fashion? Surely they are just nice scarves. I love mine and wear them all winter. I find wooly hats give me headaches sometimes now, so will be wearing them as headscarves this year too. Must go and research shawls, sounds like a life improving idea.

ofwarren · 09/11/2022 21:28

Do you wear then over your coat or instead of?
Inside or outside?

Quveas · 09/11/2022 21:37

I have three huge colourful Yak wool ones from Nepal. If you can find real yak wool it makes the finest warm shawls going. Who's every seen a cold Yak!

Pashazade · 09/11/2022 22:02

Can't help thinking Yak wool must take a lot of processing to make it useable!

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/11/2022 22:14

I think that we should also start wearing bonnets with our shawls, like this. After all most heat is lost from our heads. Maybe a few more petticoats too. Does anyone know if you can get heated crinoline?
