Cocktail dress for Burgh Island

CountessVeraRossakoff · 29/08/2022 13:55

So I am finally going to Burgh Island, and I need help finding the perfect dress for dinner.

I am 5'4", between a 12 & 14. Would rather not be sleeveless, but would consider a short or capped sleeve. Dislike my tummy, so thinking empire line / A line. I suit blue or black.

I have good legs, so thinking knee length, or shin, not floor length. I'm hoping the weather will be hot Smile

Can anyone help?

No help but so jealous! I went as a child for one of my mums special birthdays and it’s a wonderful place, we went to Bantham on holiday every year. I look at at booking it for my 40th next year and had no idea it got booked up so far in advance!

Try Ghost, or the Vampire’s Wife.

Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of those are my style.

Something like this? Although is extortionate for polyester

Lucky you! Have you looked at Phase Eight? Maybe something like this

From the back, the model looks as if she's tied up in a sack! (Quite nice from the front without the cape thing.)

IsItMeOr · 29/08/2022 15:13

Or maybe this?

I know you said blue or black, and a-line though, but thought it had a lovely art deco vibe

HelebethH · 29/08/2022 15:22

Have you looked on the Hobbs website. Some nice dresses on there?
Also you might like some from the Jolie Moi website. I have the 1950s lace Cap Sleeve Prom dress in Navy I use. Finishes on the knee and looks much better on than the pics. Can be dressed up or down and always get complimented on.
Hope you find the perfect dress and enjoy Burgh Island.

Pretty pricey but what about something like this: www.needleandthread.com/collections/embellished-dresses/products/shimmer-primrose-mini-dress-graphite

From what I've read, more is more at Burgh Island, so I'd be thinking jewelled 20s/30s style or sequins. It's a good opportunity to throw caution to the wind.

This could look really nice. It's available in both navy and black:

Or this site has loads of Gatsby style dresses in different colours, many of which have capped sleeves:

An expensive wildcard

have so much fun — Burgh Island looks amazing!

The Pretty Dress Company do timeless, classic dresses in a number of vintage inspired styles.
Sizing is good and fabric is nice quality.

Pashazade · 29/08/2022 17:06

I can't help on the dress front, although I do have mine lined up for when I eventually get to go! Got from Roman so there may be something from them. But so jealous have a fab time! Oh and I would say very sparkly earrings and something sparkly for your hair and a big fake fur stole so you can take the air after dinner....😁

AidezMoi1 · 29/08/2022 19:28

Please enlighten me, what is Burgh Island? I googled it, but it just looks like a normal island, I am not sure why you'd need to be dressed up for it!

CountessVeraRossakoff · 29/08/2022 20:05

Thank you, you angels, so many dresses. @Monstamio is closest so far.

Some of these dresses are too short for me.

The orange one was actually hideous, but thank you for the suggestion.

Burgh island has a fabulous hotel, built in the 1920s. It is where Agatha Christie wrote 2 novels, and many other famous people of the time stayed.

It is cut off at high tide from the main land.

It has been restored to it's Art Deco splendour.

"The orange one was actually hideous, but thank you for the suggestion."

You're welcome Grin you'd be like a fancy Batman but fair enough

NoDairyNoProblem · 29/08/2022 20:17

When are you going? We went in Winter and found it draughty.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/08/2022 20:23

It's an island off the coast of south Devon. You can walk across to it at low tide, but when the tide comes in you have to climb aboard a tractor-trailer thing (something to consider).

I found Burgh Island some years ago online and wanted to visit so much. It is very expensive and out of our price range. I would really struggle to find something suitable to wear as my dress sense is somewhat alternative. Have an absolutely amazing time and I do hope that you find the dress of your dreams 😃
