Cocktail dress for Burgh Island

CountessVeraRossakoff · 29/08/2022 13:55

So I am finally going to Burgh Island, and I need help finding the perfect dress for dinner.

I am 5'4", between a 12 & 14. Would rather not be sleeveless, but would consider a short or capped sleeve. Dislike my tummy, so thinking empire line / A line. I suit blue or black.

I have good legs, so thinking knee length, or shin, not floor length. I'm hoping the weather will be hot Smile

Can anyone help?

Please enlighten me, what is Burgh Island? I googled it, but it just looks like a normal island, I am not sure why you'd need to be dressed up for it!

It is wonderful place and has been used for filming on numerous occasions (Poirot, Miss Marple, Lovejoy to name but three).
If you can't get to stay there then at least make a day trip of it if you are ever in the area.

I am sure the OP will have a great time.

Oh gosh, sounds like something everyone knows, I'm a bit embarrassed i didn't. Thank you, I like learning something new!

Nancy Mac.

DH adores it there, his family used to holiday there when he was a child and we've stayed in Bigbury several times. It's amazing watching the guests come in by helicopter.

Mindymomo · 29/08/2022 21:22

We stayed in Bigbury a few years ago, went across to Burgh Island and walked to the top, then settled for a drink at The Pilchard Inn. DH had a wonder around the hotel and said there was nothing on the menu we would like, more like it was too expensive.

I didn't know either 😘

@NoDairyNoProblem when are you going? We went in Winter and found it draughty.

Maybe the orange one with the cape would come in handy then. 😁

EmmaH2022 · 29/08/2022 22:52

Is Burgh Island the place where you have to have evening wear for dinner?

girlwhowearsglasses · 29/08/2022 23:02

It’s really fab there! Hope weather warm enough to swim in the tidal pool and pretend to be in a murder mystery!

I wore a Marimekko sheath dress and felt great but I reckon as long as you’re dressed up up you’ll have a ball.

maybe look at hiring something really fabulous just for this?

I love this, it comes in black but you can see the design better in the cream. The model is 5' 10 so it would be knee length on you.

@Rina66 Batman dresses don't go down well here Grin

Rina66 · 30/08/2022 09:59

Oh wow, sorry @jubileetissues I didn't click on your link.
Such a pity, when that tide comes in and the sea tractor's not working, a Batman dress could be a girls best friend!

JubileeTissues · 30/08/2022 10:36

😂 and the orange will help the lifeboats spot you easily

QuietYou · 30/08/2022 11:00

Sorry to derail, do you have to dress up there. I was going to take my parents but if you have to wear fancy dress I'll just send them by themselves.

CountessVeraRossakoff · 30/08/2022 11:52

Definitely not going in fancy dress! But it's black tie in the ball room.

So can you have dinner in ordinary clothes?

CountessVeraRossakoff · 30/08/2022 12:05

I adore Nancy Mac, it is my ambition to own one of her dresses on day, but not right for this occasion.

I love this dress, but don't want white.

DRESS CODE
Most of our guests like to dress formally for dinner. Black tie and evening dress are quite usual. This is in keeping with the period atmosphere of evenings at Burgh, where it is quite simply impossible to be overdressed!
If, however, you prefer a less formal experience, please let us know and we’ll reserve a table for you in the Nettlefold Restaurant. Please kindly note that due to current Government guidelines, pre-booking is required at all times in the Ballroom and Nettlefold and wewilladoptafirstcome, first served policy.

Yeah sorry it's just me, I'd feel just as ridiculous in evening wear as I would in a superhero costume!
I've had a quick Google and I think you can be more casual in the Nettlefold restaurant I'll definitely email before I book though.

QuietYou · 30/08/2022 12:08

Cross post!

EmmaH2022 · 30/08/2022 12:28

Thanks, I think I have heard of it before. Have fun, those going!

Monstamio · 31/08/2022 14:36

Just came across this dress and thought of you, op.
