Are you well turned out everyday ?

I'm most def not and need to change it.
I WFH and don't even bother showering most mornings (but bath every eve). Most weekends I'm running around town doing errands or just at home sorting things etc. No make up, hair scraped back & not even brushed, shitty old clothes on and flip flops.
I have 2 bras - 1 black 1 white. My knickers are all the same type and colour (black) and shoved in a tangled heap in a drawer.
I only do nails if I'm going out out. I love gels but can't afford them all the time. I have lots of nice polishes/perfume/jewellery I hardly wear as always save for best, but best never happens.
I need to take more pride in how I look/ how I'm turned out. I want to be someone who has loads of outfits & accessories and who others look at and think "wow, she had some lovely clothes and is always well presented". Trouble is, does being "well presented" mean a hell of a lot of effort to do/maintain?

This is like me. I’m often seen in a pair of scruffy trackies with my hair scraped back. I’ve decided that I am not going to go out in them again, especially not on the school run or running errands in town. I want to start making an effort. I’ve put on some weight so need to get rid of that too.

Why though?

YesitsBess · 27/08/2022 15:38

I am currently in my pyjamas and have spilled peanut butter on myself. I feel your pain.

BlueKaftan · 27/08/2022 15:44

Hair scraped back usually looks awful, unless you’re a teenager. I’ve been lying to myself about this for years. Fresh hair, no makeup, invest in a few basic T-shirts that don’t look ratty after a wash or two. It’s easy to wear a pair of stud earrings and a link chain necklace. Voilà!

UseOfWeapons · 27/08/2022 16:13

I’m a scruff bag. Really need some clothes, but can’t be arsed to trawl round the charity shops at the moment. My hair is fine, and my acupuncturist says I’m one of those people who always look good…he’s being nice.
I’m genuinely a scruffy cow. No plans to change either.

Hair scraped back is actually quite trendy at the moment with the "clean aesthetic".
I scrape my hair back and set it super hard and it usually stays put for days so it's a good way of quickly being able to not make too much effort but still look okay

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/08/2022 16:35

I’m either on or off. So nice clothes (but not fancy - often jeans), jewellery, hair, makeup if I am out and about, scruffy gym leggings, big jumper, no makeup if I am at home. My DP sees the worst of me really.

I get my hair cut every five weeks and eyebrows done every three, but otherwise DIY everything else. I think it’s just routine really - eg I like painted nails so on a Sunday and a Wednesday evening I do those, I always do a face mask in the bath on a Friday night, tint brows and lashes after I get my brows waxed.

Thisislifefornow · 27/08/2022 16:44

I live in dresses, often ones that don't need ironing. In summer it's with sandals and winter black tights and boots. Nails always done whether that be by me or nail salon. Always wear a set of earrings. Light make up and hair tidy, even if a simple pony tail. Pluck and tint my own eyebrows too. All these things make me not feel too bad when I'm out and it honestly takes 10 mins get ready in the morning.

Do you mean random people in the street or people you know? I find it much harder to care about random people in the street, most of whom glance at you (if that) and are busy getting on with their own lives. I care more about people I spend more time with, socialising and work, but wfh for half the week does mean I am a lot more scruffy than I used to be. It’s difficult to put in all the effort when no one is really going to see you.

It often comes up on here that you should dress for the lifestyle you have so if you are going to wear say tracksuit bottoms and trainers make sure they are best in class so they look more intentional.

I personally think it is all quite a lot of effort, especially if you’re not a natural beauty with a nice figure. You have to be quite determined and strict.

JaceLancs · 27/08/2022 19:15

I think it depends on your lifestyle
I am office based in a senior role that involves quite a lot of networking so am usually dressed fairly smart with good bags and shoes or boots
I’m lucky that my hair doesn’t need much maintenance bar a good cut every 6 weeks - I don’t wear make up but have my nails done every 4 weeks
At weekends and on holiday dressing up is still important to me although it depends what I’m doing obviously

MondaysAreFineItsYourLifeThatsShit · 27/08/2022 19:23

I either make the effort of a Hollywood celebrity or a stark raving crackhead. There is no in between.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/08/2022 19:30

I always shower and have clean hear, wear silver earrings, bangles and watch and minimal make up even when I'm wearing slouchy at home clothes.

Fairislefandango · 27/08/2022 19:37

Why do you need to?

MsChatterbox · 27/08/2022 19:44

I try to be well presented the majority of the time that I go out. I find this easier to do (I have a 2 year old and 4 year old so can't be doing with long winded routines!!) if I wash my hair at night and put it in a twisted bun at the nape of my neck over night. Then it's curled and I clip up the top half to add some volume. Then I try to live in dresses because if it's a nice dress it looks like you've made loads of effort whereas really you've only thrown on one item of clothing!! I find concealer around the eyes, mascara and lipstick enough to feel "done up" without having to give much time and thought to it. The main thing is the hair though - if that is not clean then I just feel a mess no matter how much effort I put in.

edgeware · 27/08/2022 19:48

I work from home and have small children. For the past 6 months I haved lived in bycicle shorts, massive t-shirts and birkenstocks. A bit of make up if I go out. I think I get away with it…

Sillystripytail · 27/08/2022 19:58

I'm a SAHM and I spend all my time looking scruffy. I never wear make up and since the heatwaves, I've gotten out of the habit of straightening my hair so it's always scraped back. While it's been warm, I'll go out in a dress but change into trackie shorts and vest top as soon as we're home. I really want to make more of an effort, it makes me feel like shit every day tbh. But it feels like too much so I don't😒🤷‍♀️

Annieisalright · 27/08/2022 20:02

Definitely not

Since WFH became a bigger part of my life my DH makes bets on how little I will shower in a week Grin

He was in a state of shock when I told him I'd had 4 showers this week

grayhairdontcare · 27/08/2022 20:03

4 pm Friday till 6 am Monday my inner Beyoncé comes out 😃

crosbystillsandmash · 27/08/2022 20:13

I wish I could relax but I can't!!

I'm so hard on myself and generally always look really well turned out. Amongst my friendship group I have a reputation for leaving festivals, days out walking etc looking exactly as I did when I arrived!

I'm not overly done but my hair is clean and styled everyday, nails always done and I always plan my outfit the night before so my morning routine is pretty easy.
I always wear make up, even if I'm not leaving the house 😬

I do wish I could allow myself an 'off day' but it's just not in my nature!

Augend23 · 27/08/2022 20:20

I think it depends what you mean by "well turned out". I never painted my nails as it makes my nails split. But I wear a dress almost all the time, brush my hair and wear jewellery most days. Overall I think I look fairly "put together". I think dresses help because all you have to do is wear shoes that don't not go and it looks like an outfit. If you wear relatively consistent colours (for me, I wear red, green and blue mainly with the odd white or black bit) that means there are pieces of jewellery that go with most things that doesn't take any thought. A quick coat of lippie before I leave the house maybe 1 day in 7 is my only nod to makeup but I have good skin so it doesn't notice really.

HermioneWeasley · 27/08/2022 20:24

Why doesn’t it matter? Who’s opinion of how well you’re dressed matters?

I try to be clean and tidy for work - usually do my hair, wear a bit of make up and jewellery. Weekends I’m a total slob.

Runmybathforme · 27/08/2022 20:28

If you're happy as you are, why change ? I wouldn't go out of the front door without full make up, and even if we spend the day at home, it's the same. Can be casual, but always with hair done, fresh clothes and perfume. That's just me, I can't be any other way. You carry on if you're happy, it's no one else's business.

Bestcatmum · 27/08/2022 20:34

I always shower, put on makeup and have my hair done regularly but living in Glastonbury I just wear harem pants and kaftans like everyone else. It's pretty much like wearing pyjamas.

Catslovepies · 27/08/2022 20:51

I'm usually quite scruffy but most of the time I'm out and about I'm with my dog so I think I get away with it 😁. I do tend to make more of an effort at work though usually with a bit of makeup and a nice dress. I've read that in order to look well put together you need to wear 3 nice things - so I try to wear a necklace and good shoes as well.
