Are you well turned out everyday ?

I'm most def not and need to change it.
I WFH and don't even bother showering most mornings (but bath every eve). Most weekends I'm running around town doing errands or just at home sorting things etc. No make up, hair scraped back & not even brushed, shitty old clothes on and flip flops.
I have 2 bras - 1 black 1 white. My knickers are all the same type and colour (black) and shoved in a tangled heap in a drawer.
I only do nails if I'm going out out. I love gels but can't afford them all the time. I have lots of nice polishes/perfume/jewellery I hardly wear as always save for best, but best never happens.
I need to take more pride in how I look/ how I'm turned out. I want to be someone who has loads of outfits & accessories and who others look at and think "wow, she had some lovely clothes and is always well presented". Trouble is, does being "well presented" mean a hell of a lot of effort to do/maintain?

It's my hair that lets me down, it never looks polished unless I put a lot of effort in (which I don't bother with usually). It's quite frizzy without maintenance. But when it's sleek and blowdried I look and feel more put together - would love to have it professionally blowdried every week but can't afford it.

Everybody's 'well turned out' is different I guess. My everyday clothes are usually smart casual - well fitting jeans, some nice blouses/ t-shirts, flat shoes or smart trainers etc. I have some more dressy stuff, but nobody else I know dresses up really, so I always feel over dressed and self conscious.

Other than that I'm happy with my skin, have gotten into a good skincare routine in the last few years, which means I have nice clear, glowy skin even without make up. My weight has always been pretty stable, usually a size 8/10 - although WFH has mean't I feel a bit slugglish and clothes are a bit tight.

Looking forward to autumn, as I look and feel better in boots, scarves, cashmere jumpers, and autumn colours. In summer I'm always a bit more thrown together - linen trousers and a t-shirt is all I can manage.

Mariokartedoff · 28/08/2022 11:04

I've definitely let things slide since covid and WFH. But since the summer holidays I'm getting it back.

I aim to put make up on if I'm leaving the house. I have curly hair, so it does look neater tied back in a bun (CBA straightening). I wash my hair in the evenings after exercising and have a quick shower in the mornings now.

You can still be well turned out but be comfortable. I still live in jeans, but swap trainers for flat shoes and a t-shirt for a blouse when I want to be smarter. I have maxi dresses that are basically like a long t-shirt, but look so much smarter on a long day than a t-shirt and shorts. I could throw on a nice necklace and shoes with them if I wanted to dress it up.

Yes because it makes me feel great. On my odd scruffy days like if I am ill I feel wrong.
I spent a lot of my childhood in dressing up clothes and borrowing my big sister's gladrags.
My mum always saved her nice stuff for best. I get rid of anything tatty immediately.
I am ruthless about what is allowed to stay in my wardrobe so I don't have any scruffs to choose from. They are out of the equation. They're are only clothes, they are there to serve me by being worn as much as possible not to be adored in my wardrobe. If my favourites wear out I can buy lovely new ones.

PurdyLilThang · 28/08/2022 11:06

I do make an effort Mon-Fri for work, but if I worked from home I definitely wouldn’t!

I revert to scruffy bun, leggings & hoodie on weekends and wish I had a few more days per week of being able to slob a bit, but I’m in a senior client-facing role in the office Mon-Fri, so forced to make an effort.

Bearsan · 28/08/2022 11:08

Oh and I always do hair, some make up, nails, skincare, wear jewelry daily

*I'm so hard on myself and generally always look really well turned out. Amongst my friendship group I have a reputation for leaving festivals, days out walking etc looking exactly as I did when I arrived!

I'm not overly done but my hair is clean and styled everyday, nails always done and I always plan my outfit the night before so my morning routine is pretty easy.
I always wear make up, even if I'm not leaving the house 😬

I do wish I could allow myself an 'off day' but it's just not in my nature!*

@crosbystillsandmash i could have written this post! I too would love an off-day but when your usual style is ‘I made an effort’ you look a million times worse when you don’t bother!

Yes!
My dad recently popped round unexpectedly and I'd only just got up. He was really concerned because I looked so 'unwell' Thanks Dad!!! Confused
I also very rarely get compliments on nights out, as I realise I don't look any different really.
My friends who are more 'relaxed' day to day than me, look bloody amazing once they're all dressed up to go out!!

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 28/08/2022 11:12

If you want to do this, do it for yourself OP, not to impress others.

HiGunny · 28/08/2022 11:28

I wfh but always make an effort to look decent. Not for other people but because it makes me feel better in myself. So I wear jeans or jeggings rather than tracksuit bottoms or leggings and always wear a BB cream and cover up my dark under eye circles. I choose plain but good quality tops, trendy trainers in cooler months and nice sandals in summer. If it's hot I wear dresses. For the school run I wear a good classic practical coat.

My hair is always a bit meh unless I have it freshly blow dried. It's thick so takes ages to do this so instead I tie it back in a low ponytail or bun which looks more chic on me than scraped back. I have lots of grey so I have to really stay on top of the roots to stop it looking crap.

I used to work in a very corporate, office based role with high heels, perfect make up etc so this is all quite laid back for me 😆

ChicCroissant · 28/08/2022 12:06

Some of the most well-put-together people I know don't have masses of clothes, but have outfits sorted - so you often see them wearing the same outfit, but that's because it looks so good. So don't feel you have to have a lot of clothes, think of outfits rather than separates.

I used to work in a corporate suit-and-heels type workplace, now I work with food and it's no jewellery, no strong perfume and no nail vanish. I miss them all!

Interesting to hear different views about effort/appearance when WFH. I’m in the office twice a week and WFH 3 days. On my WFH days I still shower/get ready as if I were going into the office, but obviously wear more casual clothes. I’m convinced I am more productive and professional if I look half decent, even though no one sees me (unless there’s a Teams meeting).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/08/2022 15:56

@Coffeepot72 I commented that I tended to be fairly scruffy at home, but for WFH I am on camera pretty much constantly (lecturer) so do need to be “done” or I would scare the horses!

Always shower, hair and makeup and then dressed in jeans/top type outfit. (Usually with Birkenstocks or slippers though!) At the start of lockdown I knew I would end up really depressed if I slouched round with unwashed hair in my “house clothes” for WFH, and have kept that up. I’m now only at home one day a week.

nannybeach · 28/08/2022 16:14

I always think I look rubbish
My life is gardening walking the dogs. I make sure my clothes are clean and co-ordinated,it's mostly shorts (like now) denim cutoffs, striped navy/white t,get lots of stuff from charity shop (pension) have a friend, always looks fabulous walking the dog, she's 6ft, I am 5ft, never heard of "short and elegant". Hair is always neat (to start with!) Nails varnished and a bit of make up if I'm going shopping. No-one seems to dress up anymore. Funnily enough my oldest DGD 21, told her DM, "always looks glamorous". I do work to keep a size 10,but they live 100s of miles away.....only see me at my best!

Thefroglover · 28/08/2022 16:52

I always think everyone looks better than me regardless. It's a self-image thing.
This weekend I've styled my hair, put make up on, painted my nails and waxed my legs. I've not really been anywhere, just at home/in town/popped to friends house. But I feel so much better in myself for it. 2 nails chipped and I even re-did these. Chipped nails (half the polish missing) look unkept.
Someone up-thread asked why it matters to me about being that person who others look at and think "wow, she has a great wardrobe/style" type of thing. I think it's because i see others like that and want that to be me. I want to look stylish/glamorous/well kept. A school friend of mine, who I only ever see via Facebook, posts lots of pics online. She has some fantastic clothes/outfits. I'm very envious

I used to be very smartly dressed, full make up etc and take real pride in my appearance, now in my 50’s and wear much less make up, none at all most days, My mum would be absolutely horrified, she sat me down when I had my first DS to tell me I should still put on my make up every day 😂
