What to wear at my wedding?

So... the wedding will be town hall only, no guests, just 2 witnesses. Never dreamed of a big wedding, not a big deal for either of us, we've been together over 10 years so married in every way except legally. We are doing it for admin purposes. Want to keep costs as low as possible.

Initially was going to just wear jeans but I am thinking it might be seen as disrespectful by the registrars. Don't want to offend anyone, i just don't care about weddings. So now I am thinking maybe i can dress a bit smarter?

Currently I am very overweight... Size 16 (with a big mum pouch that is starting to look like a beer belly!) Gained a ton during and after pregnancy and I am feeling shit about it. Got huge breasts due to breastfeeding. I won't have time to fix my body till the wedding. No way will I wear a dress. And I never wear dresses anyway. But maybe black trousers and a smart blouse? Can you give me some ideas please?

I'd start with a new bra because that makes everything else look better. What colours do you like? What styles?
Size 16 is not huge- you need to be kinder to yourself.
When is the wedding?
How tall are you? What is your budget?

MuddlerInLaw · 23/08/2022 22:54

Here’s an example of something vaguely celebratory that isn’t a dress.

Obviously you don’t have to spend that much.

And obviously it’s all a matter of perception, but you speak as if a size 16 is exceptionally huge. It’s really not. Millions of women wearing size 16 are beautifully dressed (some in dresses!) and there’s no reason at all why you shouldn’t also look wonderful on your wedding day.

(But don’t wear black trousers. Miserable choice.)

Whataretheodds · 23/08/2022 22:58

Wear whatever you will feel great in. You won't be offending the registrar.

MuddlerInLaw · 23/08/2022 23:07

You could have a suit like this made for you in your most flattering colour.

Skelligsfeathers · 23/08/2022 23:07

I agree about no black trousers!
You could be a BIT bridal in something like this

With a cami/ shell top in your favourite colour?

Imsupertangirl · 23/08/2022 23:10

@MuddlerInLaw wowser!!!!! That’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen!!

LookItsMeAgain · 23/08/2022 23:21

Or maybe something like this:

sunglassesonthetable · 23/08/2022 23:26

I agree with please don't wear the black trousers.

I would vote your jeans and a pretty blouse rather than that.

I think a simple coloured suit. Loose fitting and nothing underneath . I've found these pink ones. Sorry they're not links.

The jumpsuits are lovely and the first in particular looks like it would flatter a lot of body shapes.

I would definitely go for a jumpsuit. I think you don't want to spend a lot of money, want to feel comfortable but still have something that is vaguely occasion-ish. I recommend this- I wore it for an occasion and have a big old size 16 mum tum and the cut really flattered me. You will need a decent bra though.

I’d be surprised if they get offended by causal dress. I know people who got married in jeans and t shirts. Didn’t hear anything about any issues. That said it could be nice to make a little effort.

Firty · 23/08/2022 23:46

The Registrar won’t care and it wouldn’t matter if they did, BUT this is a special day for you, your confidence has dipped, these photos will be around for a long time, and it’s nice to look nice. I’d suggest you treat yourself to something you love but wouldn’t otherwise buy. So wear the jeans, but maybe add cool sandles, a silk shirt with nice jewellery, or a gorgeous blouse from somewhere like Brora, etc. Whatever is your personal taste.

MuddlerInLaw · 23/08/2022 23:46

Not dressed up at all. You could maybe choose a blousier blouse - whatever makes you happy. (I always have to size down in their clothes, btw - but linking more for the general idea of extreme wedding-casual wear.)

s285 · 23/08/2022 23:48

Hi I'm a registrar, where what ever you want, it's your day 😊

Arenanewbie · 23/08/2022 23:54

No, no, no please don’t do black trousers and a blouse you can do much better. It’s your wedding day, it’s absolutely exciting and size 16 is not so huge as you are making it. My sister is size 16, actually it’s nearly size 18 in top (big beasts) and technically size 14 in skirts but due to a big belly she needs size 16. She dresses beautifully. She wears dresses, suits, skirts etc. She looks really nice and stylish. So don’t let size 16 to stop you, it’s just a number. How tall you are? Would you wear heels?
I would buy something really smart. Phase eight had lovely dresses as someone mentioned.
Do you have image consultant in the area? Someone who can go shopping with you and help to choose. A friend used such service recently to find an outfit and it helped her enormously.

Fortuny · 24/08/2022 00:23

Wear the jeans! Your day, do whatever you want. These women look great. A peplum top would be a bit fancier and a pair of comfy heels

Jolie Moi so lovely and
flattering jumpsuits, that are
also comfortable (I’m a size 16).

chillipenguin · 24/08/2022 06:38

Wear the jeans if that's what you want. They won't mind. I went to a wedding where both parties wore jeans - they took the opportunity to go and buy some fancy new ones mind. They both looked happy and radiant and it was a lovely day. If you do go that route maybe get a nice top or a jacket and let any guests/witnesses know the dress code so they don't feel over dressed.

LetsGoDoDoDo · 24/08/2022 11:00

I would advise against black trousers too, it will just look/feel like you're heading out to work!

As others have suggested a jumpsuit could be an excellent choice. Whistles do some flattering ones and you can often find some on ebay.

Have a lovely day and congratulations!

Chilleddays · 24/08/2022 11:06

What do you want to spend?

I know you say there's no way you'd wear a dress but size 16 isn't huge. There are some really pretty, casual midi dresses around at the minute and size 16 isn't hard to come by.

LadyLapsang · 24/08/2022 11:20

Get measured and buy some good underwear for the size you are now if needed. As it sounds like you intend to lose weight in the future, maybe hire an outfit. Companies such as L K Bennett Borrowed charge £79 for a month so you could hire a few things. Could also pop into a shop first to check what looks good and the size / fit.
