Life changing pair of shorts!

MistyQuigley · 12/08/2022 17:51

I'm 36 years old and haven't owned or worn a pair of shorts for my entire adult life - at least 20 years! Not even on holiday. I had convinced myself that my legs were too awful, I am just starting to realise that it was all in my head (I've been having therapy since the start of the year which has definitely played a part in that!) - I've never had supermodel legs and never will, I'm 5'4", but that shouldn't stop a person from wearing shorts in the sweltering heat!

Today I bought my first pair and omg my life has been changed forever! So comfy! I got them in the Fat Face sale. Where else should I look to stock up on shorts?

OP posts:
IAmAWarrior · 12/08/2022 18:40

Good for you op. I have hated my legs for years but as time wears on I'm less bothered. I have shorts from next and m&s and the are fairly decent quality. Both purchased in sales.

nickEcave · 12/08/2022 19:33

It's all about finding the length that is most flattering for you and often that is shorter than you think. My best length is mid thigh and I love the Boden chino style.

Davethecat2000 · 12/08/2022 19:37

I'm on holiday OP and haven't worn shorts for years either.

Bought some nice stretchy ones from H&M a few weeks back and am wearing them now.. I no longer care either what people think.. comfort is king!

HamSandwichKiller · 12/08/2022 19:39

I just bought an amazing pair from Mountain Warehouse.
Plain navy, lovely soft material - I don't look like a rambler or anything.

OutDamnedSpot · 12/08/2022 19:47

Yay! Im so pleased you’ve discovered shorts. I was the same as you - didn’t wear them throughout my twenties or thirties, then suddenly went ‘fuck it’ and now I’m hooked.

I thought this was a question and came on to say ‘Fat Face’, but you’re ahead of me on that!

I also have a surprisingly amazing pair of shorts from primark (they’re kind of stretchy, which I know sounds hideous, but somehow that means they’re flattering) and Next (and I never shop in Next, but was drawn in by these when my mum dragged me in and have been impressed)

Enjoy your new found freedom!

Terfydactyl · 12/08/2022 20:12

Oh my, I've been into shorts since the start of menopause but I have ridiculously long legs (short torso) so I go to long tall Sally. The latest pair are

Just thinking if you want longer pairs?

Sickoffamilydrama · 12/08/2022 21:39

I have recently bought shorts from Tescos and Zara.
Tesco has good ones every year.

bippityboppity87 · 12/08/2022 21:43

I'm the same as you OP. I'm 35. Went to the beach yesterday, started off with a maxi skirt with cotton shorts underneath (as I was planning to take the maxi skirt off once I got there) Didn't put my maxi skirt back on 😂 Was far too hot and honestly it was freeing. So much cooler. No weird stares or pointing/laughing that I built up in my head over the years. It was great. So much more comfortable

I'm over weight with quite stocky legs, 5'2". I'm so glad you've come to this realisation too!

Recommendations I would say Amazon. I bought these and they're so comfortable. Deep pockets too, which is always a bonus

Or if they are too short for you. These look pretty much the same, but a longer length

jogger shorts

37GoingUnder · 12/08/2022 21:49

Magic shorts or the matalan ones with the paper bag waist, I was the same as you and thinking I couldn’t wear shorts but I find both of these okay x

MollyRover · 12/08/2022 21:53

Benetton have nice ones!

vipersnest1 · 12/08/2022 22:10

Seconding Mountain Warehouse. I have two pairs of knee length, and two more pairs which are shorter but nowhere near indecent.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/08/2022 22:14

Next chino shorts are really nice

Hoolihan · 12/08/2022 22:18

I'm exactly the same! I don't have good legs but at 47 have this year suddenly thought oh fuck it and been living in shorts! So much cooler than my usual maxi skirt and my legs are tanned now which helps hide the numerous flaws! I've got a smart-ish pair from Arket, some linen blend ones from H&M and a couple of pairs of these bargains in different colours from M&S: www.marksandspencer.com/printed-pleat-front-shorts/p/clp22078721?color=BLACKMIX

secretrugbyfan · 12/08/2022 22:26

Orlebar Brown....game changers!!!

MrsBobBlackadder · 12/08/2022 22:31

Another short convert here. I'm 45 and have always covered my legs up but this year thought 'fuck it'. I have some longer shorts (from Vinted) but have just bought some mid-thigh ones from M&S and love them. I am cool and comfortable and anyone who doesn't like how I look can get stuffed Smile

mynameischloe · 12/08/2022 22:34

Another shorts convert here too. I would always wear leggings or jeans. I now have three pairs from matalan. One pair unfortunately rides up at my thighs when I walk so I'm looking to replace those. I love how cool and freeing it is to have my legs out!!! And I couldn't give a monkeys what anyone thinks. My legs are definitely my worst feature, they're very wide, pale and have some thread veins and stretch marks but who cares.

Oh they are lovely! I've been avoiding LTS since they got taken over as the reviews are dreadful, but I might try the shorts.

I've also got stupidly long out of proportion legs (36in and only 5ft 8in tall)

Hoppinggreen · 12/08/2022 22:39

I am 50 with short chubby legs, although my skin on them is nice and smooth and brown
I no longer care What anyone thinks, if I want to wear shorts I will

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 12/08/2022 22:40

I like the Uniqlo drawstring ones. Super comfortable and flattering, they do different designs each year:www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/floral-shorts-446420.html

Thisbastardcomputer · 12/08/2022 22:57

I got some lovely ones from Cotton Traders, navy to the knee, very comfortable and inexpensive

Afterfire · 12/08/2022 23:03

Asos have lots in their summer sale.

waltzingparrot · 13/08/2022 01:51

I wish I had the figure to wear these shorts.

La Redoute have some lovely shorts.

mrschocolatte · 13/08/2022 07:02

I’m 51, 5’4 and a size 12/14 and in the last two years I’ve decided shorts are the most practical item of clothing there is!

I bought the loveliest pair this year which I’ve been wearing when going out this summer and they make me feel like a million dollars. Paired with some nice gold flat sandals they are perfect in our current heatwave.

I have only recently discovered LTS and took a chance on a few items in the sale hoping I would find some jeans long enough. I did and the shorts are lovely. Also 36"legs and I'm 5'6. I'm tired of having cold ankles every winter or looking like a hiker with huge socks covering the gap between Jean bottom and shoe. I like the shorts so much I'm hoping to buy some more the exact same then I'm sorted for next year too.

ShandaLear · 13/08/2022 07:06

Shorts are my absolute favourite clothes. I have some lovely light linen/viscose mix ones from H&M. I bought them in every colour and I’ve lived in them for the whole summer.
