Life changing pair of shorts!

MistyQuigley · 12/08/2022 17:51

I'm 36 years old and haven't owned or worn a pair of shorts for my entire adult life - at least 20 years! Not even on holiday. I had convinced myself that my legs were too awful, I am just starting to realise that it was all in my head (I've been having therapy since the start of the year which has definitely played a part in that!) - I've never had supermodel legs and never will, I'm 5'4", but that shouldn't stop a person from wearing shorts in the sweltering heat!

Today I bought my first pair and omg my life has been changed forever! So comfy! I got them in the Fat Face sale. Where else should I look to stock up on shorts?

I had a lightbulb moment whilst walking the dog in the park. It suddenly struck me that men have such a simple summer uniform of t shirt and shorts. It made me wonder why we don't do the same. I came home and dug out my ancient river island denim shorts and have been in them ever since. So practical, no flappy floaty material and they also have pockets Smile
Go for it OP

Bumblenums · 13/08/2022 07:38

Ooh you're me this summer OP! I'm 5 ft 4 and have never had good legs, even when I was younger, so never wore them. I thought sod it this year and bought some M&S shorts. Have worn them all summer!

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 13/08/2022 07:47

All well and good, all bloody marvellous the discovery of shorts people BUT now of course is the pain in the arse that is shaving the buggery legs!

Christ on a bike!

At my advanced years and big size it’s like a work out!
I have creases and cavities that were yet to be discovered until the sunlight of summer appeared.

pfffft

love shorts and the freedom blah blah blah but I question if it’s worth it with the added burden of lumberjack hair up hill and down dale.

MistyQuigley · 13/08/2022 09:13

Oh loads of fab shorts, thank you all!

It's such a great feeling, I've got up and put my shorts straight back on this morning! And standing in front of the mirror realising that I just look like a normal person wearing weather appropriate clothes is so liberating! I am just annoyed at myself for spending so long convincing myself otherwise, especially as I spent most of my 20s a size 8 so would probably have looked nice in them! I'm a 10-12 now and my legs have always been on the chunky side for my size but honestly who is really going to give my legs a second thought!?

I'm so glad to have found I'm not alone as a recent shorts convert!

I just don’t shave mine anymore. No one is getting that close to mine to notice. It’s quite liberating.

Weird fish, not cheap but great quality, and brilliant customer service

I think I had a similar light bulb event, but at work. I saw all the men in shorts , ugly legs, lovely legs and no one cared at all. It was about the same time as menopause hit and I'd gone from being cold all the time to roasting hot even in winter and I just thought fuck it. If a single person says any damn thing about my legs, I will haul them over hot coals and hog tie the fuckers until they repent.
From that day on I wear shorts from about March to September and I've never been happier. I only shave my legs twice a week in shorts season and have stubble 5 days out of 7 but I care not.

I feel exactly the same.

Men have much more freedom than women with shit like this.

I've been hating my thighs. I feel like they're really lumpy and lots of cellulite but DH says they're not as bad as I think. Is it best to wear wide leg shorts? I have knee length but some seem to be really short. Been running in the gym and doing squats to tone them up

BrownTableMat · 13/08/2022 11:51

I had a similar epiphany a couple of years back. This year I’ve been living in a couple of pairs of m and s cargo shorts, which are the most comfortable and practical things EVER and I think don’t look too bad either. Lots of other women must think so too as they’re almost sold out:

im also learning not to care about stubbly legs.

I really like those, sadly I'm boycotting m and s (plus my size is oos) but if you have any other recommendations please do link.

I have some Tu denim shorts from Sainsburys that I love, they have deep enough pockets for keys and phone, an elasticated waist and not tight fitting. I’m 66, size 16 but a slim bottom half, 5’4, and happily wear them eg to the supermarket, s well as dog-walking, usually with Converse or Birkenstocks, and I certainly haven’t noticed any raised eyebrows!

abovedecknotbelow · 13/08/2022 12:37

Next boy cut shorts. I insisted on wearing knee length shorts until last year tried these in and they are so much more flattering, mid thigh length.

XingMing · 13/08/2022 12:54

I have a couple of pairs of Lands End chino shorts in the 7-inch length, that they do every year.

Can I just throw into the mix....skorts?
Bought some for walking from decathlon and very pleased.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 13/08/2022 13:00

I took my mum shopping at the Edinburgh Woollen Mill and ended up buying these for myself! So comfortable.

Which brand did you buy, if you remember?
And how far down does the skirt bit come to?

Hungryharriet · 13/08/2022 13:17

I am 5'0 and look horrendous in shorts but these M & S ones look ok on me.

Randomly, Morrison's., last summer.
Havn't been to a Morrison's since, but they are not dissimilar to the EWM ones linked above.

Shodan · 13/08/2022 13:58

I also had a lightbulb moment this year!

Always wear shorts abroad but I wouldn't wear them here, especially as I've got older and a bit fatter (so much cellulite since lockdown).

Then I thought of that thing about 'How to get a bikini body. 1. Buy bikini that fits. 2. Wear bikini." And though fuck it.

Am now the proud owner of a Shorts Body 😄

I found some nice stretch cotton ones in Tesco that fit over my jodhpur thighs.

lookforthesun · 13/08/2022 14:01

Me too - hadn’t worn in years and couldn’t find a pair that didn’t look awful. Bought these ones www.next.co.uk/style/ls289223/P95643#P95643 they’re elastic waist and stretchy but not figure hugging like Lycra. Really nice and flattering and keep me cool.

SquirrelSoShiny · 13/08/2022 14:29

I got really nice pairs from M&S this year - one denim, one very light fabric. Both mid thigh and very comfortable and flattering.

Sheffieldissunny · 13/08/2022 14:38

I love shorts, my legs aren't great, but I really don't care. I don't think anyone notices. I do shave but not particularly often, but my hair is pretty pale so it's not so obvious. I don't think I've ever noticed anyone else's leg hair before.

Orlebar Brown....game changers!!!

I've had a Google and they seem to only do men's sizes? Even so £175 for a pair of shorts??!!! I hope they come with a liposurgeon.
