How old are your hair straighteners?

I bought my Cloud 9s in 2013, I use them everyday and they're still in perfect working order. The plates are a bit scratched though, so I wondered whether that was bad for my hair, and Google told me that hair straighteners should be replaced every 3 or 4 years (as apparently the plates can heat unevenly or overheat with age).

I know that might well be a marketing trick to get people to buy new straighteners, and I hate throwing out things that are (seemingly) working perfectly well, but I'm just curious whether people on here replace their straighteners every so often or keep them until they wear out?

I only replace if they break 🤷🏼‍♀️

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 01/07/2022 22:34

I’m with you I’ve had my GHDs forever and still going strong! Not replacing them unless they don’t work anymore.

Knotty10 · 01/07/2022 22:35

16 year old GHDs here. Love them!

Alfixnm · 01/07/2022 22:36

My GHDs are probably in the region of 12 - 14 years old and still seem to work fine!!

onemouseplace · 01/07/2022 22:36

Mine are the same age as my oldest DC as I was pregnant when I bought them (actually a replacement for a pair I left in Harrogate when I was on away when I was pregnant with her). Still going strong!

onemouseplace · 01/07/2022 22:37

Missed out the key point - DD is 12 now!

Secondtimesally · 01/07/2022 22:41

Mine are so old I can’t remember buying them - must be at least 16 years though as I had them before moving country….

D0lphine · 01/07/2022 22:41

Absolutely ancient! Maybe ten years- such a good investment! The number of times I've used them!

icelolly12 · 01/07/2022 22:42

Do people straighten their hair daily? Mine would fall out if I did. How do you keep your hair in decent condition?

freesolo · 01/07/2022 22:43

My Ghd's lasted about 17 years, had to replace them last year when they stopped getting mega hot. Good going though!

Pretty much daily, at least every 2 days.

I just don't really get any split ends or anything. I don't do anything special.

Arenanewbie · 01/07/2022 22:45

Braun about 5 years old, I’ve bought it as a replacement as the previous one broke. It’s got some scratches on the sides but surely it doesn’t matter.

I have some very old nicky Clarke ones. I had them at uni over 20 years ago.

I very very rarely use them so they are in amazing condition!

Cheeseandlobster · 01/07/2022 22:47

I have some SHE straighteners circa 2003. I thought they were dear at the time but they were worth every penny

userxx · 01/07/2022 22:48

I've just bought some new straighteners that have variable heat. GHD' s were fine in my 20's but absolutely do not suit my 40 something hair. Shame as I have 2 pairs 😞

Patapouf · 01/07/2022 22:48

13 year old GHDs. I ought to replace them but don't make an effort with my appearance often enough to justify it atm

GrootUnforgiven · 01/07/2022 22:49

Original GHDS I've had for 15 years.

I bought a fancy new limited edition pair in 2017 because I read the newer ones are better for the hair. I much prefer my original ones and don't like the 2017 ones at all, I can straighten my hair with the 15 year old ones and it starts straight for days whereas the midnight purple ones I have to redo on the evening and it takes much longer too.

Dd uses the pretty ones and she can take them off to uni so it's not money totally wasted.

britneyisfree · 01/07/2022 22:50

Approx 12-14 year old GHD's.

I very rarely use them now but they work perfectly fine when I do

APrickleOfHedgehogs · 01/07/2022 22:51

Older than my dc!

HeidiWhole · 01/07/2022 22:54

GHDs have been going strong for about 17 years. They are older than the teens that now use them - still work perfectly Grin

pinkpanther84 · 01/07/2022 22:54

My GHDs are still going after 18 years!

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 01/07/2022 22:56

Had my GHDs for 20 years. They only stopped working the other month. Bought cloud 9 after recommendations on here and I love them.

frugalkitty · 01/07/2022 22:57

My GHDs are over 14 years old and still going strong, I got them about the time I had my youngest DS.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 01/07/2022 22:58

Another one is ghds going strong after 13 years. They don't get loads of use but work perfectly.

Tengreen · 01/07/2022 23:00

My GHDs are about 17-18 years old. Still work brilliantly and I am still grateful for their invention every time I use them!
