How old are your hair straighteners?

I bought my Cloud 9s in 2013, I use them everyday and they're still in perfect working order. The plates are a bit scratched though, so I wondered whether that was bad for my hair, and Google told me that hair straighteners should be replaced every 3 or 4 years (as apparently the plates can heat unevenly or overheat with age).

I know that might well be a marketing trick to get people to buy new straighteners, and I hate throwing out things that are (seemingly) working perfectly well, but I'm just curious whether people on here replace their straighteners every so often or keep them until they wear out?

snap with the ghds. I dropped and broke my 1st pair about 10/12 years ago so I bought some used ones on eBay, they’re still going strong

newyeardelurker · 01/07/2022 23:06

My GHDs are about 20 years old, still working well. Probably one of my oldest things 🙂

stevalnamechanger · 01/07/2022 23:09

15 year old ghds ... hate the newer ones

LAHallucinations · 01/07/2022 23:54

Wow, there’s some impressively old hair straighteners on here (and I thought nine years was good going)! My GHDs died after about five years, many years ago. I’ll definitely hold onto my current pair then.

I have GHDs that I must have bought in 2000-2001 when I was living abroad as I remember changing them to a three point plug when I moved back to the U.K. Still used pretty much daily.

showmethegin · 02/07/2022 00:06

My GHDs were a present for my 16th birthday, I'm 34 next week and they are still going strong!

Do people straighten their hair daily? Mine would fall out if I did. How do you keep your hair in decent condition?

I have very coarse hair so it’s pretty much indestructible. I mean it’s not in amazing condition, but I’ve managed to grow it to waist length despite completely abusing it i.e. washing, drying and straightening daily, never using heat protection products, frequently using home hair dyes and Sun In spray Blush

I also have 20year old GHDs still going strong. They are the oldest appliance I own! I even have the original style booklet with instructions on how to do the 2000s flicky hair like Dido look.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 02/07/2022 00:16

Mine are Remingtons (I think) and are probably 10 years old. Still working well. I bought them half price at £45.

maddy68 · 02/07/2022 00:27

My ghds ate at least 15 yrs old and going strong

UserError012345 · 02/07/2022 00:28

GHD's 13 years

PhilInt · 02/07/2022 00:36

Another one with 18 year old GHDs although admittedly they have been irregularly used for the last eight years or so. Thankfully curly hair is now in fashion :)

Bollingerknickers · 02/07/2022 06:08

My GHDs will be 20 years old this Christmas, definitely a good investment!

Tangoes · 02/07/2022 06:14

I've had my GHDs since 2003 but don't use them daily.well worth the 150 paid.

Fizzyfish · 02/07/2022 06:20

About 10 years old, still in good nick

SmileyPiuPiu · 02/07/2022 07:50

Oh! I hadn't ever thought about it but 10-12 years! I don't use them so much these days though.

SmileyPiuPiu · 02/07/2022 07:50

Its a wonder how they ever sell new ones if they last so long!

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 02/07/2022 08:16

my GHDs must be 15 years old, at least!

sleepyhoglet · 02/07/2022 08:19

I think I bought my GHDs in 2006!

Orangesox · 02/07/2022 08:20

I’ve got some original Remington Wet to Straights that I’ve had since around 2003. Still going strong, although these days more likely to be used to do an emergency iron of a shirt collar than my hair 😂

Doorhandleghost · 02/07/2022 10:20

I have a cloud nine normal size pair which are about 5 yrs old and a newer large plate pair I got recently. Can definitely see that there is a big difference between them - the plates on the older ones aren't as smooth through the hair. Not really intending to replace them tho!

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/07/2022 10:26

I think my GHD's must be around 12 years old now, if not a little more. Still going strong and I use them pretty much every day; albeit these days to put in a curl rather than straighten. I love them and will be gutted when they eventually do break because I've tried the newer version and they don't compare.

I'm unsurprised the 'advice' is to replace every few years, how would they make any money otherwise.

Roominmyhouse · 02/07/2022 10:30

Mine are about 17 years old, they are Wella ones from my old job in hairdressing and not all that brilliant but I refuse to replace them until they break. I only straighten my hair occasionally so they should last along time really!

SausagePourHomme · 02/07/2022 10:39

it's not all that surprising really, they have no moving parts to break. Clearly the electrics are well made. Mine are 14 years old and based on this thread sounds like they should be good for a while.

It didn't used to be surprising to find electricals from the 40s and 50s that still worked, wonder why we are so shocked that soemthing lasts 15 years now!

Juliejod · 03/07/2022 23:59

God..........Ive had to think about this........my GHD's are pushing 10 now...
