Anyone else think M&S have upped their game?

I'm not sure if it's because I recently turned 40 or if M&S have improved their womens clothing?! Lately I've found so many great work clothes in there, I have their fine knit jumper in every colour, their wide leg black lined trousers and even the jeans are a great fit for me.

I also recently got some beige tailored trousers and there is so much on the website I like the look of.

I used to hate M&S clothes but maybe it's now my age and tastes changing?!

I love some of their dresses. A friend has this and it's lovely (plus, cotton!)

I tried this on at the weekend. Lovely material but soooo much of it. It's probably me not used to such voluminous styles but anyone wanting maternity wear... this is for you

dolphinsarentcommon · 17/05/2022 10:15

... would love it.

App is annoying now

Am I alone in thinking I haven't bought any new clothes for work for about 5 years?
Slightly tempted to go to M&S and look.

ArabeI · 17/05/2022 13:56

Oh yes, I have bought most things from M & S online. The shops don't look inspiring for clothes and they don't have the stock; I bought a 'sought after' Instagram cord mini skirt online, checking daily, as there was never any stock available in store.

I know some of us, me included, have grumbled about Sparks card, but I have been collecting my freebies when visiting the food hall recently.

I've been saying this for a couple of years now. I could easily spend £££ in M&S! Their main problems are poor styling - why are the model photos so bad when the clothes look so much better styled on their social media by their own M&S "influencers"? And the huge range of stuff available - sometimes I just want to buy a black top without browsing through 275 options...

MindPalace · 17/05/2022 14:46

I’ve had some great clothes from m and s recently too. But there were actually from Fatface and other brands, so I don’t know whether it’s that rather than their own clothes improving.

Who are the M&S 'influencers' on social media and do I want to look at them?

I love their Sienna jeans, finally found jeans I like!

Carpediem15 · 18/05/2022 06:49

A couple of the staff at my local M & S post on facebook announcing food offers, newly arrived clothing and food tastings and are well produced.

tobee · 18/05/2022 20:01

This just led me to check out M&S online. Thought I'd search dresses to see what I thought. Scrolling down I came across jumpsuit (in dresses, ok then?) and then denim (trouser) dungarees. Wtf!

Bananaman123 · 18/05/2022 20:08

Yes! Got some joggers and cargo trousers for the summer, excellent quality but not so cheap

AllKnowingGerbil · 18/05/2022 20:09

Yes! I wear their sienna jeans.

I went shopping for business casual clothes cos finally returning to the office. I searched the high street and ended up in Marks. I got a bunch of their supersoft £15 jumpers in various nice colours, a nice denim blouse, and a couple of good utility style linen shirts. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I found.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/05/2022 20:19

Thanks @orangeisthenewpuce

ArabeI · 19/05/2022 09:53

My Instagram-inspired purchase wasn't a specific M &S influencer, just general fashion.

I've just bought running shorts to try (online). I have similar Sweaty Betty shorts so will be interested to see how they compare.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/05/2022 09:56

totally agree- im 35 and its the only place, except sports direct, I buy clothes from now.
Zara has completely alienated me with their sizing and cropped-nesss.
I feel way too old for boohoo and alike crap
Next is frumpy/ DP is frumpy
H&M and New look is for pre teens imo.

thepainteddesertcanwait · 19/05/2022 10:09

I'm 47. My wardrobe has basically evolved into a uniform consisting of:

Work days: M&S black or dark grey trousers plus one of their fine knit Merino v-neck jumpers

Days off: M&S tencel jeans (so comfy!) and another fine knit Merino v-neck 🤣

I just love, love, love the merino v necks so much, I have about 15 of them now mainly in navy and black but also the pink, bright blue & green and I always get compliments on them! They wash and even tumble dry well and just need a quick iron. They are thin and cool for warm days, and thin and warm for cool days, perfect for layering up. I absolutely hate getting overheated and these jumpers are just amazing. They are a loose fit which suits me, I am tall with enormous boobs and they hang really well, are plenty long enough in the body and the sleeve and don't cling! Just perfect.

My mum used to buy literally all her clothes in M&S. I never thought I would too 🙈🤣

mumneedshelp4 · 19/05/2022 10:10

more like up their prices lol😜

They've definitely done that!

I bought a pair of trousers in M&S last week and I had to return them as they were too tight a fit. I went online to order the next size up and the price of the same trousers had gone up by about €2 for all sizes. Not much you say but they were the very same trousers. Originally cost something like €47 a pair, now on sale for €49!

DashboardConfessional · 19/05/2022 19:51

That's a normal thing for retailers to do though. I used to be a retail buyer. If the pound dropped against the euro or the country of the factory we used raised the minimum wage (thus all wages) and upped their prices, we'd have to do small annual increases. This time around it'll be costing M&S a fortune to heat and light their stores, a fortune in petrol to deliver to all their stores, a fortune in courier petrol for online orders.

TheFoxAndTheStar · 19/05/2022 19:58

I have just spent a small fortune thanks to this thread!

I am delighted though. I was feeling really bored of what was in my wardrobe.

M&S have clearly been inspired by Toast and Hobbs this season. Really nice quality cottons and linens too.

Although I do think their online photos and descriptions aren’t doing them any favours.

Particularly nice were:

  • linen “balloon trousers” (toast inspired)

  • a chore coat with gathered sleeves (described as a denim jacket)

  • a gorgeous fitted broiderie shirt-dress (very hobbs)

  • the most comfortable and flattering jeans I have ever had

  • Irish linen belted blazer

  • v-neck linen tops

  • lovely cobalt blue linen dress

  • leather fisherman’s sandals

i can honestly say for each item I would happily have paid twice the price given the quality.

They change their prices in the space of a few days??? That's normal??? It's never happened to me before and I'm a long time shopper in M&S. First time I've noticed the very same product increase in price in the space of a few days.

BooseysMom · 20/05/2022 12:05

I ordered some plain black work trousers thinking they had upped their game. Nope they Iare still shit! Back to Jigsaw.

I have been searching for months for work trousers. Being short legged nothing fits me. I tried M&S trousers and they are too long and baggy. I look like a short arsed clown! Eventually I found the perfect trousers in the Fatface sale. Ordered an extra pair while they were there. They are regular leg too so why are M&S trousers all designed for tall leggy people?!

mumneedshelp4 · 20/05/2022 12:24

didnt ask.
