Anyone got long grey/white hair?

So.. the time has come when my hair is pretty much snow white under my brunette colour, according to my hairdresser, and I’ve gone a bit lighter in preparation to embrace the white, or at least save roots showing within two weeks.

I’m thinking of aiming for white with a toner eventually. My hair is quite long and I’d like to keep it that way.

Anyone done this, or know of anyone who has?

I have very long hair. And I am going very grey. I shan't dye as my hair is too long and fragile.

Cocolapew · 23/02/2022 21:16

I don't, I've just cut it again because I don't suit longer hair but I can recommend White Hot Hair shoosing cream for adding shine to your hair.

Cocolapew it's a beautiful colour and I really like the styles.

WouldBeGood · 24/02/2022 16:30

Ooh, I like your colour and the cut @Cocolapew.

I might go short again, just enjoying having unexpectedly long hair just now, and hoping it won’t get wrecked in the transition process. My thinking is if it does I’ll get it cropped.

I’m not brave enough to go cold turkey and grow it out.

Thank you, I shaved mine off to a number 2 so it didn't take long to transitionGrin

WouldBeGood · 25/02/2022 15:02

@Cocolapew I’m definitely not brave enough for that! I have a giant head 🤣

Mines mid back length really thick and coarse with a wave in it.

Im auburn naturally but quite a bit of grey (well white) I do put a colour rinse through it to hide the grey in a match to my colour.

I'd quite like to not colour it anymore but I don't know how much is grey/white not sure I can be doing with the growing it out half grey half colour thing. Wondering if Colour B4 or similar would work ?

WouldBeGood · 25/02/2022 17:49

I definitely can’t do that @LadyNell, couldn’t bear it. My plan, as suggested by hairdresser, and begun last week, is to lighten it with foils until it blends in, then grow out, maybe using toners to keep it a nice shade, though it looks pretty white now.

I’m going to keep darkish eyebrows to stop lack of definition in my pale and chubby face too.

A friend of mine has hair which is naturally white at the roots, silver from about the neckdown and then the last six inches are very dark brown. It's down to her waist.

When i first saw it I thought it was the fanciest balayage I'd ever seen. It looks fantastic. Couldn't believe it when she said it was natural.

EmpressCixi · 25/02/2022 17:59

I plan to. Just a case of waiting. Only two silver hairs, no grey, no white. Don’t dye my hair at all. In my fifties.

Kidsfortea · 25/02/2022 18:11

I started to go grey at 18 with a white stripe. Am lazy so couldn't be bothered to colour it. By 20 completely white. My hair is below shoulder length. I am now well over 60 and people comment on my hair colour frequently even asking what dye I use. Go for it. So much easier.

Kidsfortea · 25/02/2022 18:12

@Elodie9

I grew my silver in throughout lockdown, I have shoulder length hair. I love it and love not having to colour it but how do you get it a bit shiny? Years ago when I was brown haired I used John Frieda brunette gloss creme and that was great, not sticky . I haven't found anything like that which suits my silver hair yet.
Use a purple shampoo, a good one and it will really shine for you.
WhileMyMeringueGentlyWeeps · 25/02/2022 18:14

Mine is just past shoulder length at the moment and I hope to persevere past that annoying stage to longer. I stopped dyeing about 7 years ago and spent an agonising year or so growing the colour out. Winter and hats helped!
Would love some tips and recommendations for shine and condition products.

Squidthing · 25/02/2022 18:20

Can anyone recommend what conditioning treatments to use? My hair is getting frizzier with the greys and is quite fine so a bit witchy.

CatherinedeBourgh · 25/02/2022 18:24

I do. I transitioned it by using only temporary colour for a year. It then washed out making a fairly gradual transition when I stopped.

cutebutstabby · 25/02/2022 18:53

I grew mine out over 3 years and didn't like it in the end. I have boob-length hair. I dyed it again and am and just take dealing with the roots on the chin. It wasn't because I wanted to look younger, I just preferred my hair a different colour to what it is naturally as I've always enjoyed experimenting. Honestly the purple shampos can only do so much and aometines they can stain precious white hairs permanently if you're not careful. Best to just buy lovely shampoos and conditioners that are white to avoid this and make your hair shine. Best of luck OP, it'll be grown out before you know it!Smile

Yep me

SirVixofVixHall · 25/02/2022 19:42

I know a few women with long grey or white hair. I love it, so beautiful.

Glaze Super Color Conditioning Gloss Sheer Glow

I'm getting there , my hair is shoulder skiming but not full grey , but yes the condotion does suffer
I bught the glaze today ( colour free , I don't want to add colour ) I'll do a patch test and give it a whirl.

Silverparting · 26/02/2022 08:43

I'm 48 and started growing mine out last March thanks to a thread like this that I started. Posters like Coco gave me much encouragement, so thank you all!

Lovely pix on here.

I’ve gone from a dark brown bob to a grey bob over the last two years - had it cut shorter recently to get the last bits of brown out at the bottom but will regrow it to longer than this. On the whole I like it - have also enjoyed changing my make up to make the grey go zing. Bright red lipstick will be your best friend. Grin

Another Facebook group is "Going gracefully", many of the products are American but they have lots of members with before during and after pics which I love

Greyhairwarmheart · 26/02/2022 18:48

My hair is long and grey. Best aspect is not having to cope with roots. It can look witchy if it gets tangled in the wind. Philip Kingsley elastizer helps with frizz.

My hair is completely white and curly after I grew it out during lockdown. I’m keeping it longer.

Don’t be afraid to do whatever you want with your hair! Smile

More lovely hair! Thanks, the pictures are great and I’m definitely less scared 😃

Hoping the transition goes smoothly, and I can avoid orange
