Anyone got long grey/white hair?

So.. the time has come when my hair is pretty much snow white under my brunette colour, according to my hairdresser, and I’ve gone a bit lighter in preparation to embrace the white, or at least save roots showing within two weeks.

I’m thinking of aiming for white with a toner eventually. My hair is quite long and I’d like to keep it that way.

Anyone done this, or know of anyone who has?

I spent a couple of years going from really dark brown (almost black) hair with silver/grey/white roots, through increasing amounts of blonde highlights and then when I was almost totally blond I started to grow it all out. Most of the growing out period was through the first lock down, which made things easier. Once hairdressers reopened my first haircut was considerably shorter than my usual shoulder length hair (think chin length) then the second haircut after the second lock down was also a more drastic haircut and now my hair is totally natural.

Look up Jack Martin colourist. Great inspiration

My journey was not a good one and cost me many hundreds. I wish I’d seen Jack martin’s posts and used them to find someone in uk to do my hair. My long beautiful hair was destroyed by local salon who attempted to do a quick job of “cleansing” (aka stripping) my hair. Another colourist butted in when I was having high lights/low lights put in as was the plan suggested by my colourist in the salon. More senior colourist days, no, needs to be “cleansed”. I had orange hair with large patches as they had two ladies applying the solution and they didn’t coordinate where they started from. Their solution as it was late in the evening was to put in the part brown hair dye! And they’d fried my hair! Two days later I gently washed my hair with products they sold me, much of my hair broke off. I tried a few other salons, lots of treatments, having highlights applied later etc. basically, had to eventually get my hair cut to chin length.

So please do ensure the person you choose to do this has proven track record. Know it will take many hours if you go for the colouring route.

I now have lovely hair which is a mixture of silver and grey. Have many people compliment me on it too. Every so often I do get a toner applied as it tends to get a bit brassy (yellowish).

Is your hair straight or curly, OP? There's a lot of grey/white curly specific info and inspiration out there, including photo diaries of growing out the dye. So many gorgeous women! From what I remember, the transition from hair dye is easier (no harsh dye line), but the texture of curls + grey/white requires added love.

WouldBeGood · 22/02/2022 09:50

My hair straight @Stravaig.

@PainterMummy 😱 sounds awful. But that Jack Martin page! Inspiring- I have no objection to colour per se, just want to stop the horrible threes week roots.

Have you seen Sali Hughes? She has gone grey - dyed it and I think it looks great!

I have to disagree, her hair looks awful (which is ridiculous given how often she seems to visit her hairdresser/colourist).

I gave up colouring my hair a good ten years ago - too expensive and way too much of a clart on. It's very thick and went from just below shoulder length to boob length over lockdown and I've kept it that way. The grey isn't uniform and is much more pronounced at the front (not quite Toast of London, but close!), but I love it. I would like to have it as long and straight as Annika Von Holdt, but I don't have her face or figure, so I don't think I could get away with it.

p.s. I looked up the shampoo that she uses and nearly fainted at the cost! Think I'll stick with Faith in Nature. 😁

Oh, yours is lovely @ilovecardigans, very glam: the faith in nature is working!

I’m glad I asked on here. I’m feeling quite positive about it now.

@Elodie9 argan oil is brilliant for adding shine to any hair. One to two drops on damp hair distributed through should be enough.
You can either hair dry for super gloss or air dry after squish to condish and let dry overnight. Still shiny and soft.

So lovely to see so many embracing long grey hair, think it looks fantastic/elegant. Mine is frizzy white at the front but still dark brown at the back. Would love it to all go grey (though the frizz would need attention!)

User48751490 · 23/02/2022 13:11

Salt and pepper, just leaving it completely natural here. I prefer not to use chemicals and focus on the cut.

It's very liberating!

ChippyDucks150 · 23/02/2022 13:16

I have...I used to get my hair bleached and toned but since we realised it's almost white I just get a toner on top every 5 or 6 weeks. I'll attach a pic of my hair when I had it done last weekend.

I have never had any kind of colour put on my hair so it has evolved from being a gingery blonde , to a sandy blonde and is now a grey / silver blonde . I did have a bob for a long while but am growing it again and it’s about shoulder length and I often get complimented on the colour .

WouldBeGood · 23/02/2022 15:37

that’s gorgeous @ChippyDucks150! Im hoping to work towards similar as mine is apparently white all over now.

Liberation is what I’m after @User48751490, although I’m not averse to chemicals, and happy to do toners, etc. I’m very shallow that way 😃

Mine is white.

I started going grey in my 20s and kept it dyed, knowing that the day would come when I had to stop.

During lockdown, I let it go.

I am so pleased with it now and get lots of compliments.

If I had my time again, I would never had dyed it at all.

princessbear80 · 23/02/2022 16:01

I’m not white all over, but mostly silvery grey. I’m been growing it out for just over a year, as I was so fed up with my roots. Genuinely love it now. Ive recently had it cut short to get rid of as much dye as possible while still being able to put it in a ponytail. But I will grown it back to about bra strap length when all the dye is gone.

So many typos Blush

nearlyspringyay · 23/02/2022 16:04

I've got long below shoulder length dark hair with two massive cruella de ville wires stripes all the way through. I'm allergic to any dye that contacts my scalp so gave up on that years ago but it's meant my grey / white is all the same length rather than the badger stripe.

I'm getting pink highlights next week:)

MerryMarigold · 23/02/2022 16:15

This is my grey hair (I never blow dry). I was the same with hating the 3 week white roots so grew it out and love it! I actually loved the grow out when it was 50:50. It looked so cool. Mine is whiter at the front and darker in the back/ underneath. I love all the tones.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/02/2022 16:25

I do, it's normally longer than in this photo, I'd just had a chunk cut off. Mine is naturally wavy so I have to either straighten or curl it otherwise it would look frizzy and witchy but then that was true when it was black too!

I don’t like it on her. The condition looks awful. Whereas this is beautiful.

Really lovely thread, enjoyed seeing all the fabulous hair.

Itsnotdeep · 23/02/2022 18:21

It is lovely. I think it looks fab. As soon as I have enough grey, I'm going to embrace this style too.

StillMedusa · 23/02/2022 20:47

Mine's nearly elbow length and salt and pepper with some white at the front. I gave up colouring 4 or 5 years ago and it grew long over lockdown.
I LOVE the freedom of no roots. Sometimes I straighten it but mostly just chuck it in a plait or messy bun. Now and again I wish it was whiter but I guess it will get their in time :D

GettingStuffed · 23/02/2022 21:03

@ilovecardigans my gran's hair was that colour, I'm so jealous. Currently mine is blonde/light brown with shiny of red and a few greys, I'll never be that colour Envy
