i want a warm, wintery, woody, comforting scent

I don't like masculine or unisex stuff, dont know why, it really doesn't suit me - even though 'masculine' is a silly way to describe a scent if we are honest.

But i don't want anything sharp or too sweet either.
I don't like Byredo or Dyptique, and i really cant stomach jo malone. Also not a fan of many mainstream designer fragrances such as chanel, Dior, etc.

What i do like - gingerlily by molten brown, Seychelles by white company Blush and fresca-something in orange by guerlain.

I want something warm, like a memory blanket, soothing, but like soft spice/wood mixed with something soft, warm, seasonal. Memorable, lasting but not showy. As comforting as mother, but also individual, slightly mysterious....I cant be arsed with lavender or lime.

Im trying my best to evoke something here, but it is pointless because fragrance shifts around so much and we all react to it so differently - but worth a try!

Not bothered about price - i am happy to check out cheap scents as many are as lovely as expensive ones. It all depends. Price doesnt always predict whether i will love it.

Are there any other au de parfums by guerlain or scents by the White Co that i might like? Or should i try something different?

I love mitsouko in the winter. I find it very comforting. It might fit your criteria.

Lightasafly · 18/11/2021 21:26

I love Herbae by L’Occitane. It’s difficult to describe though sorry. It’s herby, grassy, woody. I love it 🥰

Pheasantlysurprised · 18/11/2021 21:26

ive heard mitsouko is a 'challenging' scent, but it does interest me.

Paloma Picasso

i love l'occitaine - have a rose scent that is like pure turkish delight! Have tried their cherry blossom and vervaine (vetiver???) but dont get along with them sadly.

Rituals do some lovely perfumes - I had one that sounds like what you’re describing although I can’t remember the name . Might be worth checking them out?

Pheasantlysurprised · 18/11/2021 21:29

Isnt 'Paloma' Pablo Picasso's daughter? is this also a scent or is it hers?

Yes, Mitsouko has really grown on me lately but the price seems to shoot up just before Christmas.

I would also recommend 4160 Tuesdays Another Kiss By The Fireside. It's exactly as cuddly and comforting as you're hoping for. Ever since my bottle arrived I can't stop wearing it.

You could also try Sandalwood Sacre by Le Jardin Retrouve ( try their website, they do a good sample service). It's warm sandalwood with musk and oakmoss. I also like their Bois Tabac Virginia.

I'd also recommend, on the cheap and cheerful end of the scale, Dana Tabu or Dana Chantilly. You can get gift sets on Perfume Click for under £8.

Avon does a great cosy amber for £18 made by Rodrigo Flores- Roux. It's called Ambre Ardent and it smells like expensive niche but isn't.

A lot of Mumsnet perfumistas adore MMM Replica By The Fireplace, and it is indeed as cosy it sounds!

MissBattleaxe · 18/11/2021 21:32

@Pheasantlysurprised yes Mitsouko is definitely an acquired taste. I wouldn't buy it blind. It's taken me years to kind of "get" it.

Paloma Picasso is a perfume and Paloma Picasso is Pablo's daughter.

JaneJeffer · 18/11/2021 21:32

Gucci by Gucci. The brown bottle.

Thecatsbutler · 18/11/2021 21:33

I love Paloma Picasso, used to wear it in my younger days. I wear Estee Lauder Private Collection. Earthy, warm and spicy.

Opal8 · 18/11/2021 21:33

Maison margeila replica by the fireplace

HippyChickMama · 18/11/2021 21:36

Have a look at Bath House. They do some lovely perfumes that are a bit different, patchouli and black pepper is my favourite but I've never disliked any of them

RudeAF · 18/11/2021 21:44

Have you tried the Mandarin Basilica from Guerlain? Same range as the Fresca one. I also like a lot of the Clean Reserve fragrances. Skin is my favourite but might not be spicy enough, but Blonde Rose might suit.

CommanderBurnham · 18/11/2021 21:45

Try some wood oils like sandalwood or cedar?

So many tempting idea here, thank you so much!

Im drawn to the Picasso scent (located it, it is his daughter Grin), what a curious bottle!

I like the sound of the Estee lauder too. Sandalwood also nice....

I used to enjoy going to John Lewis or Selfridges to have a snoot, really miss that and dont like buying blind. Sadly not driving at the moment and a trip to closest city is a pain in the arse.

@Pheasantlysurprised there is one in Ambleside. They used to sell a selection in the farm shop at Gloucester services of all places but all of the shops are in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Cheshire

1frenchfoodie · 18/11/2021 22:04

As @Opal8 say - By the Fireplace by Maison Martin Margiela. It has a lot of what you say you are looking for even if I find it a little too vanilla forward than ideal - though I am wearing it right now so that’s a minor gripe.

The Fragrantica website is a great resource if you want scents with certain notes or to find things that smell like perfumes you already like.

DramaAlpaca · 18/11/2021 22:06

I detest the Paloma Picasso fragrance. The opening is quite nice, but when it settles it's really grubby and very unappealing on me, like I badly need a shower. Urrgh. I had to scrub it off. It's fascinating how scents react completely differently on people.

On the other hand, I agree with MissBattleaxe on Sandalwood Sacre. I adore it, it's a scent I just need to have in my life. It's unisex though. I tried a small sample first.

I've ordered a sample of Mitsouko and other classic Guerlain scents from a company in the US and they are due to arrive in the next day or two. I'm intrigued by them and can't wait to try them.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/11/2021 22:09

They had a lovely one in l’occitaine last weekend, I don’t know the name but it was wafting all over the store

Pheasantlysurprised · 18/11/2021 22:12

Just reading Fragrantica for the Picasso fragrance. Laughing here as someone described it as smelling of beaver (as in rodents) !

Estee lauder private collection really appeals to me at the moment.

Will check out the Fireside..

Estee Lauder Sensuous EDP or Sensuous Noir.

ferretface · 18/11/2021 22:19

Femininite du Bois by Serge Lutens. Warm and comforting cedar smell. Very sophisticated :)

MissBattleaxe · 18/11/2021 22:36

@DramaAlpaca Lovely to find another Sandalwood Sacre fan! It was love at first sniff for me.
