i want a warm, wintery, woody, comforting scent

I don't like masculine or unisex stuff, dont know why, it really doesn't suit me - even though 'masculine' is a silly way to describe a scent if we are honest.

But i don't want anything sharp or too sweet either.
I don't like Byredo or Dyptique, and i really cant stomach jo malone. Also not a fan of many mainstream designer fragrances such as chanel, Dior, etc.

What i do like - gingerlily by molten brown, Seychelles by white company Blush and fresca-something in orange by guerlain.

I want something warm, like a memory blanket, soothing, but like soft spice/wood mixed with something soft, warm, seasonal. Memorable, lasting but not showy. As comforting as mother, but also individual, slightly mysterious....I cant be arsed with lavender or lime.

Im trying my best to evoke something here, but it is pointless because fragrance shifts around so much and we all react to it so differently - but worth a try!

Not bothered about price - i am happy to check out cheap scents as many are as lovely as expensive ones. It all depends. Price doesnt always predict whether i will love it.

Are there any other au de parfums by guerlain or scents by the White Co that i might like? Or should i try something different?

@DramaAlpaca, I definitely do!

I adore: Shalimar, Samsara, Vol de Nuit, L'Heure Bleu. I don't mind Apres l'ondee but I find it a bit "clean". Mitsouko to me just has a slight twang of baby sick to it Grin (sorry! SORRY!) And I know Jicky is supposed to be sexy and skanky but I'm an old Dior girl for skank.

I love Perfumes: the A to Z guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/11/2021 16:59

Avon Endless. Every time I wear it I get compliments. And I never wear more than one squirt. Usually about a fiver.

MissBattleaxe · 23/11/2021 21:33

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow do you mean Avon Timeless? Avon has some brilliant perfumes, often made by world class perfumers.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/11/2021 07:29

Yes Timeless, Endless is this fucking term.

LadyNell · 24/11/2021 07:56

Cashmere by Chopard

LadyNell · 24/11/2021 07:57

Casmir bloody auto correct

Cheeezz · 24/11/2021 09:24

Ambre des Merveilles and Elixir des Merveilles both by Hermes are gorgeous winter scents, Ambre has more vanilla sweetness, neither are floral though, more orangey and resinous, I find them both very comforting Smile

Agree, it's lovely. Their older perfumes are amazing. (another eBay haul was a huge box of about 100 random scents/soaps/talcs)

I visited the Guerlain store in Covent Garden today and got to try a whole array of gorgeous fragrances. I adored Mitsouko and have been sniffing my wrist all day. It smells comforting and slightly familiar but it’s also quite different. I love its history and heritage. Highly recommend a visit.

HBGKC · 02/12/2021 13:39

I didn't know there was a Guerlain store in Covent Garden! Whereabouts? I have a Diptique voucher to spend, might have to take a little tour...

Hi there, i wanted to update!

I finally settled upon Clinique's Elixir.
Purchased a very small bottle locally for the heck of it and was disappointed initially as at least one ingredient deeply offended me, although I could not work out what it was, perhaps the aldehydes?

Although as the days went by I found myself spraying it on, regardless. I wondered why i was doing this, and slowly came to the conclusion that i was actually falling in love with it. We had a tricky start, but at present most of my other fragrances, including those which were far more costly, pale in comparison. It is as though all other fragrances are pretending, and this on isnt! Grin
I am going to guess that I may have found my signature scent.

Also bought the cookies/gingerbread version and whilst that has a fragrance that pleases me (warm, seasonal, cozy) it doesn't have much in the way of longevity.
The elixir really, really lasts, unlike anything I have worn before.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

L'Air de Rien by Miller Harris is beautiful in the cooler months and is back in stock. It's not overly feminine and has oakmoss and amber. The descriptions on Fragrantica are rather "interesting", but don't let that put you off. I find it warm, cosy and sensual and not too heavy.

Lovely! I gravitate towards aldehydes, but they aren't for the faint hearted! Enjoy your perfume!

I got one from M and S - Woody and Vanilla, their own brand, not too strong but about 12 quid for quite a big bottle. Really nice.

whataboutbob · 02/12/2021 17:58

@Housewife2010 I liked l’Air de rien but realised I got a headache each time I wore it.

AnnieSnap · 02/12/2021 23:50

The original YSL Opium. It’s deeply warm and musky, so much so that we only need to use a little at a time. It lasts for ages too. I think it’s unbeatable.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/12/2021 06:33

Is it possible to buy Andy Tauer discovery sets in the UK please ?

Nomorefuckstogive · 03/12/2021 07:47

Velvet Teddy by Mac is surprisingly lovely.

Nomorefuckstogive · 03/12/2021 07:49

Aah, so glad you love Aromatics Elixir. So distinctive.

You can get samples from Les Senteurs (if not actual sets). I think they are about £3 each.
FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/12/2021 23:13

RaoulDufysCat Thank you . Found and ordered 🙂

TheBabyBoo · 03/12/2021 23:39

Aesop Rozu is a floral woody/spicy. I moved onto it from Halfeti by Penhaligon and Le Labo Tonka Bean.

Aesop also do a woody and spicy one called Marrakech that could fit in with your Christmassy wintery idea.

There is another Aesop woody one, sort of foresty one called Hwyl but that might be too unisexy.

The complaints you mention about things smelling different and having less longevity might be from people who ho’ve had mild Covid and not realised and their sense of smell has been a bit affected.

RaoulDufysCat · 04/12/2021 00:33

@FormerlySpeckledyHen

They are honestly gorgeous. Hope you enjoy!

Babymamamama · 04/12/2021 00:50

Feuilles de tabac by Miller Harris is gorgeous and very woody.
