i want a warm, wintery, woody, comforting scent

I don't like masculine or unisex stuff, dont know why, it really doesn't suit me - even though 'masculine' is a silly way to describe a scent if we are honest.

But i don't want anything sharp or too sweet either.
I don't like Byredo or Dyptique, and i really cant stomach jo malone. Also not a fan of many mainstream designer fragrances such as chanel, Dior, etc.

What i do like - gingerlily by molten brown, Seychelles by white company Blush and fresca-something in orange by guerlain.

I want something warm, like a memory blanket, soothing, but like soft spice/wood mixed with something soft, warm, seasonal. Memorable, lasting but not showy. As comforting as mother, but also individual, slightly mysterious....I cant be arsed with lavender or lime.

Im trying my best to evoke something here, but it is pointless because fragrance shifts around so much and we all react to it so differently - but worth a try!

Not bothered about price - i am happy to check out cheap scents as many are as lovely as expensive ones. It all depends. Price doesnt always predict whether i will love it.

Are there any other au de parfums by guerlain or scents by the White Co that i might like? Or should i try something different?

I absolutely love l’autre oud by Lancôme. It’s woody, incense, oud, earthy. It’s gorgeous, but sadly I can’t find it in stock anywhere and I’ve got got a half bottle left 😭

AnotherFuckingUsername · 19/11/2021 10:31

I know nothing about scents but when reading your post I automatically thought about Origins Ginger @Pheasantlysurprised. To me, it's that warm blanket. Warm yet light with a wee bit of fizz. Think Fentimans cola!

MissBattleaxe · 19/11/2021 10:33

@DramaAlpaca I am so thrilled to hear that! I love Tubereuse Trianon too. AND you bought the book! And you've ordered 4160 Tuesdays samples. I am having a marvellous day. Thank you!

PS I was at 4160 Tuesdays on Wednesdays and it was heaven. All hand made and hand poured and it smells fabulous when you go in.

@stealingbeauty

Maybe Liz Earle No 15, although there is some sweetness to it. It’s warm, soft, spicy and comforting. Probably my favourite scent for autumn and winter.
I second this. This is by far my favourite winter scent. Even when I first got it there was something about the scent that just made me happy.
Player067 · 19/11/2021 10:35

I know you said no Chanel, but Coromandel would be worth a try - from the Les Exclusifs collection. It is a beautiful scent.
I second the Andy Tauer recommendation too

altforvarmt · 19/11/2021 10:39

Guerlain Vol de Nuit. Powdery and woody, and just gorgeous.

I second the recommendation for Serge Lutens Feminite de Bois also.

And Chanel Bois des Iles, which is a rich sandalwood scent, is super woody yet like a soft comforting blanket.

JulesJules · 19/11/2021 11:50

Mitsouko is my all time favourite, for 30years. I'd also vote for Liz Earle 15. Love Halfeti, but so expensive.

DramaAlpaca · 19/11/2021 11:53

@MissBattleaxe you're welcome Smile I'm really enjoying the book, btw, really interesting. It's going to cost me a fortune as there's so many fragrances I want to try! I won't get my 4160 samples for a while as I had to get them delivered to my parents' place in the UK as they don't deliver to Ireland, so I'll pick them up on my next visit - can't wait.

@SouthernFashionista I got the samples from a small Parisian perfume house called Le Jardin Retrouve, recommended on one of these threads by @MissBattleaxe. Look for their website. They do discovery sets of ten samples for €40, and they send you a voucher for that amount which you can use against your favourites. They also do smaller sets if you know what type of fragrances you like.

Pheasantlysurprised · 19/11/2021 12:40

Interested in the Liz Earle now, too.
Looking further in to it, i am not certain about the chestnut element of the Replica Fireside scent.

It is currently a tie between Liz and Estee!

Will also check out the Chanel mentioned above, but i dont have good experience with this label.

Have enjoyed going through these so very much and am still open to ideas.

Aromatics Elixir by Clinique would be perfect for you. Also, Night by The White Company.

I wear them both through Autumn & Winter.

Northumberlandlass · 19/11/2021 13:42

Tom Ford’s Black Orchid is my favourite Autumn/Winter scent…. Not necessarily woody!

mewkins · 19/11/2021 13:59

Coromandel is lovely. It smells of pianos.

NotMyCat · 19/11/2021 14:28

If you wanted to try the by the fireside, the perfume parlour dupe is identical. eBay has some samples of the real thing too

scottishnames · 19/11/2021 14:49

Very expensive but Nuit de Noel by Caron can be wonderful in winter and - as the name suggests - it seems to be at its best at night. (The older version is nicer than the new, as with so many classic scents.)

YY to Paloma Picasso, also Maison Rebatchi's Feu Patchouli - www.lessenteurs.com/products/feu-patchouli?variant=31949108772945

Mcmcmcmc · 19/11/2021 15:13

100 Bon Myrrhe et encens is exactly that for me. It’s a French perfume brand, organic I think. They were sold at Liberty’s but I can see this one is out of stock on their website.

Theorema by Fendi. It smells like oranges, tobacco and sex.

DedalusBloom · 19/11/2021 16:13

Cheap and cheerful Boss Orange smells very warm cosy jumper on me.

Portrait of a Lady is you like Incense and Rose?
Frederic Malle Dans tes bras is also warm and a bit spicy on me - the heliotrope is creamy and warming.

Another vote for Halfeti - the Perfume Parlour dupe is pretty good if you want to try it out. It's just the right side of Oud for me.

CherylStreep · 19/11/2021 16:25

Armani She (gold bottle)
Roger and Gallet Bois d'Orange
Myrrh and Tonka

bambooelectrictoothbrushhead · 19/11/2021 16:39

I love Theorema! So sad it is discontinued.

SouthernFashionista · 19/11/2021 17:30

I’ve never worn perfume that I get so many comments on 😊

Tam Dao by Diptyque might work. I love it, but can't afford to replace my bottle at the moment.

WildFlowerBees · 19/11/2021 17:58

A lady was wearing Mitsouko, she smelt amazing. I tried it on myself and it smelt awful sadly.

I know you said not Diptique however Eau Duelle is a lovely winter scent I get compliments every time I wear it. Not too vanilla and a lovely musky scent.
