I want a warm winter dress

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 28/09/2021 12:49

Do they exist, or do I need to buy trousers?

Jumper dress and wear tights.

I only own dresses, don't own any trousers.

I have this:

Can't really find the links for all my other winter dresses as they are so old but they are

  • a uniqlo striped knit dress -gap turtleneck jumper dress -uniqlo waffle knit jumper dress
idontlikealdi · 28/09/2021 13:51

I hate trousers in winter. Dress and tights all the way. They are everywhere at the moment.

My warmest one is a wool one from joules but tbh it's too hot to wear most of the time.

Pheasantlysurprised · 28/09/2021 14:02

Trends seem to dictate that every single woman on earth right now wants a vast, floaty, tiered polyester monstrosity.

I have no idea where the middle ground is, if you want something warm, casual and decent. I have seen heavier weight dresses in stores like Toast, Plumo, Poetry, etc, but they are all extremely oversized. How I would styles a decent winter coat over any of them is a mystery I don't care to solve. And don't get me started on short fucking sleeves.

It is like there is this presumption that we only wear dresses to party.

I hate trousers, they don't suit me, and I am tired of the stiff experience of all types of jeans. I have found a dent weight midi skirt or shorter with a good knit works well in the mean time. If the weather is dire with gales and rain I would simply pop my leggings on with a longline cashmere jumper and raincoat over the top.

Good luck, I wish I could be of more assistance, but it has been this way for many years. Dresses are always subject to Uber-trendiness so rarely function well for day to day. It arses me off.

Pheasantlysurprised · 28/09/2021 14:05

And anyone who suggests playsuits or dungaree dresses with those childlike contrasting tights (oh christ!) always seem to miss the point. It is like living in a permanent warehouse sale aka 2010.

AgnesNaismith · 28/09/2021 14:08

Oh I love that dress @onlychildhamster sad it has sold out!!

mibbelucieachwell · 28/09/2021 14:11

Three quarter length sleeves on nearly every autumn/winter' dress I see. Angry

Sexist much. I don't see men's tops with 3/4 length sleeves.

LaBellina · 28/09/2021 14:15

Uniqlo has loads every year in different colors, designs and materials. This one looks pretty warm :

And here’s another one.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 28/09/2021 14:24

I have the Uniqlo soufflé knit turtleneck dress. It’s proper, seriously warm! Combined with woolly tights and heat tech underwear, it’s far and away the warmest outfit I own.

ASEAskeptic · 28/09/2021 14:25

Wool all the way imo! Barely needs washing, never needs ironing, super comfy and very forgiving of a few extra winter pounds if they creep in. But good merino dresses are rarely I'm the high street shops I've found. If you google merino wool dress you should get some options coming up to get you started and you can just go down the google hole from there

ASEAskeptic · 28/09/2021 14:26

*rarely in the high street shops

LaBellina · 28/09/2021 14:27

Uniqlo Heat Tech underwear and undershirts are amazing indeed @DazzlePaintedBattlePants. I also loved the Uniqlo furry fleece cardigans from last year to stay warm.

onlychildhamster · 28/09/2021 14:29

@mibbelucieachwell they are my favorite type of sleeve! They look more elegant than full length sleeves imho, and also good for people with short arms. and for warmer winter days, you might get away with not wearing a jumper so people can actually see your lovely dress under your coat.

Men look less nice in long sleeved shirts than in jumpers so a t shirt is good for layering under a jumper. My DH wears a short sleeve t shirt as an undershirt all year around except in summer.

londonmummy1966 · 28/09/2021 14:29

TU have quite a lot of knitted dresses at the moment. I've recently bought a black cord shirtdress from there - it is out of stock online but you might find one in store.

I love 3/4 length sleeves. But then I'm very tall and a 3/4 length sleeve means it will actually fit my arms.

This or gorgeous. Tempted to order it but not sure it would suit my pear shape
haba · 28/09/2021 14:33

Knitted dresses all the way! With wooly tights and knee length boots they are warmer than trousers.
Mine are from:
White stuff
White company
Fat Face
Gap
M&S
Sainsbury's

Merino ones from White company, Celtic &Co, and Woolovers, but they'll be more £££ than wool/acrylic mix

I promise I don’t work for Uniqlo 🤣

MintJulia · 28/09/2021 14:39

Most of the dresses I've seen this year look like a costume for a barn dance and really not my thing. I've settled on wool mix sweaters and slim ankle grazers for now.

phantomgirl22 · 28/09/2021 14:48

@mibbelucieachwell

I hate full length sleeves! They looks so frumpy!

MintJulia · 28/09/2021 14:51

What about a Hobbs Sarah knitted dress. It's part wool, so should be warm, reasonable shape and good with tights/boots.

mibbelucieachwell · 28/09/2021 15:09

phantomgirl

Do you feel like that about men in full length sleeves too?

LaTomatina · 28/09/2021 15:13

I have a couple of warm tunic dresses that are long enough to go with tights but also work with leggings or skinny leg trousers on colder days. One is denim, one corduroy. Think they are both from Fat Face.
