Hairdresser combed brushed my curly hair before washing

I went to a new salon today, a friend of a friend owns it and I know a few of our friends go.

Before washing my hair she brushed it "to get all these knots out". I've not known someone do that before and didn't appreciate it but didn't feel I could say. But I should have done right?

She then seemed surprised when, after cutting and combing / brushing it repeatedly I wasn't content for her to simply put some curling products on.

I don't think I'll go back...

I think I need a proper curly cut!

Huh? Confused I've never been to a hairdresser where they don't brush/comb the hair before washing it.
Just as I'd brush it before washing it myself.
Am I missing something?

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 15/09/2021 22:00

Do you have curly hair smidge?

It's not usual to brush through curly hair when it's dry.

Also when styling its not usual to brush through before putting product on.

You do need someone that knows what they're doing with curly hair.

stickybear · 15/09/2021 22:03

I have curly hair and they always comb it out before washing, sometimes with one of those tangle teaser things

You must have straight hair! If you try to brush mine you end up with a huge fuzzy mess & quite often a broken hairbrush
Jellycatspyjamas · 15/09/2021 22:06

I have curly hair, the hairdresser combs it out before washing, uses a comb to section it for cutting but doesn’t brush or comb before applying products and drying.

ThePotatoCroquette · 15/09/2021 22:07

Why would you brush your hair before you wash it? I've never heard of that before or had it done. Doesn't it just get tangled again when they wash it?

cockneysparra1 · 15/09/2021 22:08

😬😬 you need a curly cut! I have curly hair and honestly haven't brushed it in years!

ThePotatoCroquette · 15/09/2021 22:08

Obviously it needs to be combed once set to be cut though

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 15/09/2021 22:09

You should have said though!!

SiobhanSharpe · 15/09/2021 22:09

I don't brush my wavy/curly hair before washing. I finger comb the shampoo and conditioner through it when it's wet, though.
It definitely sounds like you need a stylist who can handle curly hair , and show it to its best advantage.
Have you read about the 'curly girl' method? I considered it but it is definitely a bit of a faff and i wasn't sure if my hair was curly enough to work. But the photos on the site were amazing.

JoeMaplin · 15/09/2021 22:10

You definitely need a curly cut! Mine is wavy but I sometimes straighten, sometimes follow curly girl. My hairdresser is amazing but was quite shocked when I showed her how my hair would curl just by scrunching a handful after it had been washed and combed!. I follow an amazing salon on insta called curl_cymru.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 15/09/2021 22:12

My hair is v curly and I usually comb it with conditioner snd a wide toothed comb in the shower.

I don't think I need CG as I'm happy with my products snd stuff but I think I do need a curly cut. I never had one, always see a normal hair dresser and they cut it and straighten it. I don't usually mind that as I quite like it straightened occasionally but I feel like she didn't do my hair any good. The cut seemed fine enough for a trim.

I have never had my curly hair brushed before washing. Just combed and sectioned before cutting.

I do like Manes by Mel on YouTube

And I've never been to a hairdresser who does comb or brush my hair before washing it. May hair is currently wavy/curly, but was pretty straight for a few years before that (thanks hormones) and wavy before that, and whether straight or curly the hairdresser has never combed or brushed it before washing. They do comb it when it's wet and they're cutting it.
GemmaRuby · 15/09/2021 22:15

My hairdresser never brushes my hair before washing it and it’s not even curly.

ittakes2 · 15/09/2021 22:16

I am finding this thread interesting as I also have curly hair and hairdresser brushes knotts out before the wash and always have!

Jellycatspyjamas · 15/09/2021 22:19

The only time I’ve had my hair straightened after cutting is when the hairdresser didn’t know how to cut curly hair. My current hair dresser always dries it curly so they can check the cut is sitting well once dry and curly. They’ll often cut individual curls once dry and they can see the curl pattern in the context of the cut.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 15/09/2021 22:20

Good luck brushing the knots out of my mane, it'd be tangled up again before my bum was even off the chair to walk to the sinks GrinGrin

Antinerak · 15/09/2021 22:31

You need to see a hairdresser that specialises in curls- see if you can find a black owned salon near you, they'll look after your hair or will know who to recommend to you.

I have curly hair and never brush it. The tangles come out when it's been washed and conditioned. Dry curly hair when it's brushed becomes a frizzy disaster.
DonatellaVersace · 15/09/2021 22:35

I have 3a curls and the hair dresser hands me a brush and asks me to do so before washing it (also before putting colour on) so she doesn’t rip my hair out trying to do so.

I had a curly cut once and they didn’t brush it at all whilst dry but I also didn’t like the cut so never went back!

I do mine to try to get some of the loose hair out before I wash it to try to prolong the plughole unblocking as long as possible!
penguinwithasuitcase · 15/09/2021 22:43

Drives me nuts how few hairdressers actually know how to work with curls.

It's not like curly hair is rare –surely it wouldn't be outrageous to cover the basics at hairdressing school?
