Hairdresser combed brushed my curly hair before washing

I went to a new salon today, a friend of a friend owns it and I know a few of our friends go.

Before washing my hair she brushed it "to get all these knots out". I've not known someone do that before and didn't appreciate it but didn't feel I could say. But I should have done right?

She then seemed surprised when, after cutting and combing / brushing it repeatedly I wasn't content for her to simply put some curling products on.

I don't think I'll go back...

I think I need a proper curly cut!

I have wavy/curly hair & l always brush it gently before washing 😂 my head hasn’t exploded yet!
It’s fine. Just don’t brush it if you’ve just washed it. I don’t brush it at all before styling and only wash it twice a week!

What l *do find though, is how harsh some hairdressers are. I handle my hair so carefully / and they are so rough with drying / straightening etc… not even offering heat protection!

Good point - she didn't use a protector!

I have wavy hair and use a tangle teaser on it. The curls do drop but only for a little while.

Seems normal? I have two that use a curly only hairdresser. They do dry cuts (takes around 2hrs for one of them), they cut it curl by curl. They ask for you to go at end of cycle before you would normally wash it, different timeframes for different hair.

Once they have given the cut they then get a tangle teezer type thing and take to the hair and give it a good brush. At this point it is full on Afro (my kids don’t have Afro’s, but obviously brushing very curly hair does that!). Apparently it gets out loose hair and also is good for the scalp. Then it’s washed with shampoo and a leave in conditioner treatment. They don’t dry, if it’s winter they get the offer of one of those things that rotate like a space station above the head just so they don’t leave with dripping hair, in summer they leave with it wet.

They are also instructed to give their dry hair a brush immediately before washing it which is once a fortnight for one and once a week for the other. Obviously no brushing inbetween washes. Hair up for sleep and one sleeps with a silk cap, the other a silk pillowcase.

I've got poker straight fine hair and they don't brush it first. They run their fingers through to figure out what i want and then straight to a wash.

@BunnytheFriendlyDragon

I'm in yorkshire

@2bunny watch manes by Mel on YouTube

I was thinking if I go again I might go with wet combed hair, let her cut it, then style at home

But I think actually I'd rather not go again

Depending where you are in Yorkshire and how far you're willing to travel, but if Newcastle is feasible for you I can recommend somewhere really good.

I lived in West Yorkshire for a while and used to take annual leave solely to drive up to Newcastle for my haircut 😂

Just PM me if you want the details
