Hairdresser combed brushed my curly hair before washing

I went to a new salon today, a friend of a friend owns it and I know a few of our friends go.

Before washing my hair she brushed it "to get all these knots out". I've not known someone do that before and didn't appreciate it but didn't feel I could say. But I should have done right?

She then seemed surprised when, after cutting and combing / brushing it repeatedly I wasn't content for her to simply put some curling products on.

I don't think I'll go back...

I think I need a proper curly cut!

In my opinion dry cuts are best for curly hair. My hairdresser just sprays the hair first if they need to comb out knots & then lets it dry before cutting.

Wineat5isfine · 15/09/2021 22:50

I have natural corkscrew curls and always brush my hair before washing as does my hairdresser!

Blessex · 15/09/2021 22:51

I have straight hair and no hairdresser ever ever in over 40 years of hair cuts has brushed my hair when dry before washing it. And I have been to a lot of salons.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 15/09/2021 22:51

I found it a bit frustrating tbf

There is at least one curly salon I know of about an hour away. I may try there

You sound like hard work. Why didn't you just say to her??

NotMyCat · 16/09/2021 01:17

I have a curly cut and no, she doesn't brush before washing
I go in with dry hair, no product in and she cuts it. Then washes it, cuts it again, product/diffuse and then tidied up any bits that are needed

NotMyCat · 16/09/2021 01:23

@penguinwithasuitcase

Drives me nuts how few hairdressers actually know how to work with curls.

It's not like curly hair is rare –surely it wouldn't be outrageous to cover the basics at hairdressing school?

It's only just come in apparently as part of the standard (or whatever it's called) that it has to be covered

This is mine air dried with nothing in it, and diffused with product. Hairdressers always seem scared of using stuff that holds and want to use a dab of mousse or serum and I'm "no, hard hold gel please!"

Eh chav?

I didn't say anything as I was surprised abd it's a while si de I had my hair cut do I was questioning myself plus it seemed like maybe that was the only way she knew how to do it.

It's also a bit awkward once she's just started it!

You have lovely curls @NotMyCat

I knew I wasn't going to get a curly cut as every hairdresser ha washed it and combed it etc but it's unusual for them to brush it dry.

There were other things that made the experience unsatisfactory but o don't want to give details in case she's on Mumsnet SS she's a friend of a friend and I see her sometimes. It's a shame as the place is quite close to home.

I would find it weird too, I have never had my hair brushed before washing, even when I used to go to hairdressers who were clueless about curly hair. It should only be detangled when wet, with a lot of conditioner

OP if you're in the NE of England I can recommend somewhere really good for curly hair

marriednotdead · 16/09/2021 06:04

If you know what works for you and your hair, then you need to find a hairdresser that will do it without question.
I have 3b/c fine curls that knot easily and brushing it with a tangle tweezer before washing is the only way that stops it being a frizzball. If I brushed it after washing, my curls would be reduced to a limp frizzy wave.

My hairdresser never uses a brush or comb on my hair; he just snips the ends off of the individual wet curls and uses the products I supply him with before drying with a diffuser.

Evvyjb · 16/09/2021 06:10

Lord no.

Where are you based? Maybe some of us curries can recommend?

purplesequins · 16/09/2021 06:22

I have straight hair and never had it brushed before washing at a salon.

I do brush at home before a shower to minimise hair blocking the drain.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 16/09/2021 06:38

I have very curly hair and it would be impossible to brush when dry without doing a lot of damage. I doubt I could even get a brush through.

I only brush (with a tangle tweezer brush) when it’s wet, immediately after I’ve washed it.

2bunny · 16/09/2021 06:43

Wait what, my dd is 10 has blond curly hair I have asked many times at hairdresser am I suppose to brush it (alway look so bad for a few day after) she said yes 😳 it's starting to look a mess of frizz, if anyone can give me a few pointers how to maintain and teach her I would be grateful thank you sorry tk jump on your post op

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 16/09/2021 07:30

It took me about 40 odd years to work out how to deal with my curly hair.

I wake up looking like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. The only way to take my hair is to wash it daily (often frowned upon on MN). I shampoo and condition (frizz ease curly products). Then brush through with a tangle tweezer until there are no knots or resistance. Then I apply a small blob of Moroccanoil curl creme (NOT the intensive one) and run it though my hair with my fingers. Then the same with a tiny drop of Moroccanoil argon oil. Then leave to dry.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 16/09/2021 07:31

And I only let someone with curly hair cut it.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 16/09/2021 07:39

Not a chance! And I've never worked with a hairdresser who's brushed curly hair when it's dry either it can be damaging

gratedbeetroot · 16/09/2021 07:41

I have curly hair and the only time I brush it is just before I go to the hairdressers to have highlights done. The hairdresser combs each section before applying each foil so I do it to make it easier for her - it still tangles a bit but it’s better than leaving it curly! Also I leave the hairdressers with damp hair and sort it out myself at home as I know how to deal with my own hair better than anyone else. I’ve done this for years!

Pashazade · 16/09/2021 07:52

@2bunny ok golden rule number one (yes it may work for some people but...) never ever brush curly hair when it's dry only when wet and preferably only after it's got conditioner in it. So occasionally I brush my hair when dry but only when I can't be arsed to wash it and I don't care if the curls disappear. Buy yourself The Curly Girl book by Lorainne Massey. You don't need to treat it like a bible but it will definitely help.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 16/09/2021 07:55

I'm in yorkshire

@2bunny watch manes by Mel on YouTube

I was thinking if I go again I might go with wet combed hair, let her cut it, then style at home

But I think actually I'd rather not go again

I have curly hair and have always had it combed through before a wash and cut. Brushes never go near my curly hair despite the latest tick tick trends as they damage and stretch my hair. Hairdresser combs hair to cut it but once dry that's it. I use a wide tooth comb if I need to tidy it up.

NailsNeedDoing · 16/09/2021 08:02

I have very curly hair too, and I would brush through it while styling, still wet and with product on though.

The only time I’ve ever had my hair dry brushed before they do anything has been for a colour, it would be impossible to cut after a dry brush because it would just be a mass of frizz.

I did pay for a curly dry cut with a specialist once, it was a complete waste of money. It didn’t look or feel any different to when I’ve had a normal hairdresser do a wet cut with layers, and if anything they were worse at styling because they insisted they knew my hair better than I did. I still ended up having to style it myself at home.
