What colour of tights and ankle boots with navy dress?

I’ve been wearing navy tights and navy ankle boots but it’s far too much blue. What’s the alternatives?

Both black.
Navy and black are so chic, don’t introduce any other colour except metallic (jewellery etc)

@icklekid

Thanks for the inspiration op - I normally stick with skin coloured but like grey idea. This is from Pinterest but looks good. Think would also work with longer dress and shorter boots
That’s exactly the kind of thing I normally wear Smile

Brilliant ideas on here, thanks everyone! I’ll be honest, the black/navy combo is one I’ll need to get my head around but I’m going to head to the shops today and buy a few colours of tights to try out. Also got my eye on a couple of pairs of brown ankle boots Smile

TBH I have never heard of black and navy being a fashion no no.

I remember being told that "blue and green should not be seen" as a child, but I wear green T-shirts with blue jeans and it looks fine.

Puffalicious · 12/09/2021 10:15

I take on board all your opinions on the navy/Black issue, but it's so hard wired into me that I'll never change. I think if it seemed deliberate- black top and shoes, navy trousers, I might see the logic, or if it was stylish, casual clothes, but I see far too many in work wear with a nice outfit in navy/ navy in it and black shoes papped on the end.

We'll agree to disagree.

adhdpunchbag · 12/09/2021 11:08

@IDontThinkSoNo yeah, but the image chosen to illustrate breaking that fashion no-no is a navy top and bottom, NO tights and a pair of skimpy black flip-flops or nude shoes.....

minipie · 12/09/2021 11:36

OP I honestly think the answer depends on your legs

I am short like you, I also have chunky ish legs. Coloured tights are awful on me - I look kids tv presenter rather than edgy. So is anything that cuts my leg off at the ankle. This is why I stick to black tights/black boots as that way my legs aren’t cut off and aren’t made a feature.

If I had fabulous long legs I would probably say nude fishnets and tan ankle boots with navy.

Well yes, but I wasn’t really commenting on the dress and tights issue, more the black and navy issue.
I think black and navy can look wonderful but it has to look deliberate. A navy dress with black shoes can look unstylish and not thought through, but it could also look great. Like most clothing options, it’s how you wear it. Appreciate that’s not helpful for a clothing rule but that’s why i don’t believe in clothing rules!

I think that’s true. I know that if I wear my knee high brown boots I can get away with 2 or 3 inches of different (dark) colour of tights between my hem snd the top of my boots, but a navy dress, different colour of tights or nude tights, then a third colour of ankle boots just looks wrong on my short legs for some reason. I’m a size 10/12 - so not big but equally not tiny.

A navy dress with black shoes can look unstylish

I had no idea it was unstylish. I always wear black footwear in the winter. I hate nude color footwear, and brown just doesn't go with any of my clothes.

I now own a pair of navy shoes though.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 12/09/2021 13:49

These threads are always split between people who think coloured tights are heinous and children’s tv presenter-esque, and those who think black tights can’t possibly go with every outfit. Grin
Personally I’m in the former camp, and I’ve also never seen a nice pair of navy shoes.

SirChenjins · 12/09/2021 14:30

I’m in the middle - black tights and boots with navy dresses seem wrong to me and while I like coloured tights they have to be dark - not so keen on bright coloured tights!

This outfit really doesn’t work because textures and fabrics are working against each other. Those tights would be lovely with wool or corduroy navy skirt but not that linen/cotton dress. And the boots are a dull light brown, where they need to be a rich brown to go with the grey tights. Don’t get me started on the frumpy beige cardigan.
SirChenjins · 12/09/2021 15:09

It works for me SalsaLove - sorry it doesn’t work for you Smile

I'm pretty much with you OP but I do have burgundy, grey and bottle green tights that are great and I wear loads of 60 denier navy in the winter. I natural wear a lot of natural clothes as my colouring suits it better than black. My friend wears mustard tights with navy and it looks amazing on her- but she's tall with great pins.

To the PP who says they've never seen navy shoes they like- what? There are so many styles of shoes out there. If you haveva favourite pair of black shoes odds on you would like them in navy.

Puffalicious · 12/09/2021 15:14

Navy clothes, not natural!

SirChenjins · 12/09/2021 15:18

Burgundy, grey and bottle green tights are in my wardrobe too - I was thinking more along the lines of bright blue, yellow, postbox red, that sort of colour Smile

I didn’t say it was unstylish. I said it can look unstylish but could also look great
Pheasantlysurprised · 12/09/2021 17:32

with navy I would wear charcoal grey tights. I'd be flexible with boots.

londonmummy1966 · 12/09/2021 17:44

How about these with grey woolly tights? The slightly higher top and lacing should help with your narrow ankles.

KrakowDawn · 12/09/2021 17:48

I wear navy dresses all the time, and I wear mustard, pewter, burgundy, red, or charcoal grey tights with them. I also wear navy tights fairly often, and had no idea this wasn't okay.
Could someone with bottle green tights recommend somewhere to get them please?

purdypuma · 12/09/2021 17:54

I'd go for navy opaques with tan, mustard or red coloured boots. Purple/aubergine opaques/ with the navy boots may work.

traintraveller · 12/09/2021 18:07

Navy, brown or burgandy

Blossomtoes · 12/09/2021 18:58

@Puffalicious

I cannot believe so many saying black with navy - my number one rule NEVER to break, taught by my mam.

I wear navy boots and flesh tights/ coloured like PP have said - burgundy/ teal/ mustard (snag tights always).

I would also wear tan boots and I have a pair of matt gold which look great with loads of stuff, particularly navy.

My mum taught me that too. I’m delighted to say she was completely wrong. Navy and black is so chic.

Those boots are lovely Smile

What colour of ankle boots do you wear with your navy dresses @KrakowDawn?

Tan Doc Martens Chelsea boots.
