For autumn/winter what would they be?

I'm 44, size 12/14, pretty clueless, and on a budget! My last pair of darkish skinnies are looking tired. This is for every day/pub drinks type wear.

I'm a similar age/size and bought Taiki jeans from Monki. They suit my shape and are study, organic denim.

If you're on a budget OP I really rate Primarks 'vintage slim straight leg' jeans.

Somewhere between skinny and straight leg but the cut is more tapered than a straight leg. They're about £15 and they donate few washes. I've got a mid wash blue and the black and love both.

I was pleasantly surprised when I popped into Marks and Spencer for jeans this week, tried on 5 pairs and all but one fitted me - this is rare for me! Nice range of styles too and good prices. Maybe worth a look?

Shopgirl1 · 08/09/2021 14:22

I would buy a pair of Topshop Jamie jeans from ASOS.

I have gone back to these after I tried a pair of £100 Shock Levis. I only bought them as I had a voucher, but they have turned out to be absolutely awful.

They go baggy almost immediately on wearing. They have lost fabric integrity, as in they have bagged and puckered on the seams. I wash them on gentle and indeed the dark blue has retained, so I don't think I have over-washed them. Really, really disappointed. I should complain really, but I have had them a year now, so too late.

My Jamie's are still going after several years. In fact they go at the knees before anywhere else, my last pair lasted several years. Obviously being washed in the same way as the Levis.

Sadly ASOS doesn't have the range that Top Shop had, and I am yet to catch some black (non-ripped or shiny) basic jeans, but will keep trying, as they are just brilliant.

River island Molly jeans are always a good buy in pale blue and wear with any top and white trainers

DarlingCoffee · 08/09/2021 15:20

Rag & Bone are my absolute favourite after many other pairs!

stealingbeauty · 08/09/2021 15:24

I’d get the M&S balloon leg. Either those or high waisted flares.

Just looked up what these are.... bloody hell, they are revolting. The most unflattering jeans ever, worse than flares, and flares are horrible too! (In my humble and very middle aged opinion!!).
hairycabbage · 08/09/2021 17:22

I'd buy another pair of M and S Sienna jeans. So comfortable, just enough stretch and various leg lengths!

Zampa · 08/09/2021 17:26

I really rate Monki jeans. I have a pair of Yoko jeans (high waist, wide leg) and like a PP another pair called Taiki (high waist, tapered leg, ankle length).

There's 20% off at the moment too.

Divebar2021 · 08/09/2021 17:30

I would look at dark wash M&S boyfriend. Slightly looser without being flappy. Will be able to wear with an ankle boot and trainers…. More versatile than many other styles right now.

ImFree2doasiwant · 08/09/2021 18:54

Oh thank you for so many suggestions! I will have alook at them all.

I really dobt want anything too fashionable because I'm just not, so may rule out some on that count. Equally I'm happy to venture away from skinniers which oddly I'm finding don't work so well having lost a couple of stone

I’ve just bought two pairs of high waisted slim straight cut. They’re just a bit wider than skinnies, and don’t cling to my calves, but are hopefully still slim enough to work with boots when it gets cold. I think the high waist is the important bit to look current, though. It looks dated now to leave tops untucked, and tucking them into even mid-rise jeans perfectly exposes my middle aged belly roll and emphasises it nicely.

DGFB · 08/09/2021 20:46

I also love M&S jeans at the moment

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 08/09/2021 20:51

I love Weekday jeans, which are not cheap but can be picked up for a reasonable price on ebay. My current go to pair are Weekday Seattle. So comfy and flattering too.

XingMing · 08/09/2021 21:03

The plainest most "vanilla" style that fit and flatter your body. Straight leg, mid rise waist, in a washed but not distressed denim.

AuldAlliance · 09/09/2021 06:31

@Boood
Where did you get them?

PlayItCool · 09/09/2021 07:56

I love Levi's 501 cropped. I bought a darker blue pair in John Lewis and they look lovely. I have noticed the denim quality seems variable with different colour though, I bought a black pair and the fabric feels much thinner

Jmaho · 09/09/2021 08:33

After avoiding Next jeans for years as had an experience some years ago when I couldn't get a single pair to fit. I revisited and was pleasantly surprised. I'm 41 and a 12 and bought a lovely pair of high waisted slim leg. Great for everyday

KhoshkaKatya · 09/09/2021 08:41

Monki Yoko

I'm top heavy with a short torso so if I tuck in I just look like boobs on legs. Can't wear high rise anything for the same reason - looks completely ridiculous. It might be current but it just doesn't work for me. I think it's better to choose what works for your body rather than attempt to wear clothes that don't suit you just because they're "in".

I've just bought some Next mid-rise slim fit jeans but was guided by price (£24) as they're temporary as I shift some baby weight. Will happily dig out my many pairs of Topshop Jamies when I can fit back into them.

These are the marmite of jeans! I've just bought my 4th pair and I absolutely love them. I am 50, and both of my daughters, in their early 20s, have followed my lead and also wear these now. They suit our shape, which is small waist and larger bottom and thighs. Despite being very different sizes (6-14), all of us are widest around the top of our thighs. I can see that they don't look like skinny jeans, but my shape never worked in skinny jeans because I look like a parsnip.
ShingleBeach · 09/09/2021 09:42

M&S Sienna.
