So, picture included as the other day I saw a friend and she said that I looked lovely and she was 'loving the mumsy vibe'
She's not a nasty person and often speaks a mile a minute and says stuff without thinking, but it just made me feel I looked 'frumpy' - maybe in my mind as I do have 15/20 lbs extra on me after DD that I'm in the process of losing, and I feel nothing looks good anymore or suits my new shape ...anyway...opinions please

Honestly it is a bit mumsy. But it looks nice and the colours suit you. Dressing when you have little kids does mostly have to revolve around practicality rather than being super stylish.

I think the waist belt band thing might make it look a tad mumsy but I like it. Also depends how you style it. White birks instead of sketchers for example

Ooh I really like that top!

A perfectly nice casual outfit . You look lovely . I suppose it could be described as mumsy but only in that it's a pretty , practical outfit for being a mum .

Mumsy vibe? So jeans and a top are giving off a mumsy vibe? There are a lot of people rocking the mumsy vibe then. What was your perfect non mumsy vibe friend wearing?

lovelybitofsquirrell · 17/07/2021 12:14

Honestly. It's very Mumsy. There is nothing wrong with that though if that's your style.

I like it. I wouldn't consider it mumsy - more casual but nice. Certainly a whole lot less mumsy than a t shirt and jeans.

I mean, your friend is right. It is a very nice outfit, but simultaneously I’m early 20s and my mum would wear that. It isn’t a personal insult - like surely you knew when you put that outfit on that it’s a casual, practical outfit vs a runway outfit.

It has nothing to with your weight, it’s just your friend observing that you have embraced mum life vs maybe how you used to dress? It’s not a frumpy outfit either

Yes I did think it leaned toward 'Mumsy' but I'm glad to hear that it looks generally nice!

@Arrowheart my friend is very very glam and sexy, so she was in a short t shirt dress bare legs, some fashionable trainers and full face and done hair. (Not that my hair wasn't done and make up on, she just always manages to look very sexy, she is very gym orientated though so a toned size 10!)

@thinkingaboutitall I'm late 20s and my mum wouldn't wear it which is what perhaps gives me a complex as well - my mum is very glamorous and fashionable and I definitely look like her sister rather than daughter at times 😂😂😂😂

@catfunk im wearing it with brown chunky doc marten sandals so it could go either way looks wise

Thank you all x

I think she might mean an 'cool Insta mum' vibe rather than 'frumpy', which is how that outfit comes across to me. I like it! There is no reason why being 'mumsy' can't be a positive thing!

Also, everything I wear has to be breastfeeding friendly so actually in hindsight maybe it looks inherently 'mumsy' in that sense

Can you tie it to the side not in the middle? It's a lovely colourful you.

I think you look lovely. That pink top suits your skin tone.

thinkingaboutitall · 17/07/2021 12:28

ahh I see!

Giving “mum vibes” isn’t a bad thing. Breastfeeding is your priority right now and it’s completely understandable that you dress to accommodate that. But there’s nothing wrong with how you look - if you put a different outfit on you wouldn’t look “mumsy” or “frumpy” or whatever.

I don’t think your friend meant to offend, it’s a cute summer outfit

I really like it. To me it does say casual, hanging out pushing my toddler on the swing kind of vibe. So I guess in that sense 'Mumsy'. Maybe it depends on what your friends style is as to what her opinion of 'mumsy' clothes are.

I like it! Quite similar to what I'd wear but then sometimes I think i lean towards 'Mumsy' 😂. I have 2 little kids and like others say-often you just wanna be comfortable and relaxed, if that makes you Mumsy then so what! After all, we are mums!

I like it and think it's stylish.

think as pp said cool insta mum/ motherland vibes not frumpy/ dowdy.

@cherrypiepie oooooh motherland vibes love it. I loved everything Julia wore.

Thanks for the vote of confidence everyone. I do love this friend but she is very stylish and slim and can sometimes say things that come across a certain way but maybe doesn't mean it like that. Anyway she's the sort of friend it's hard to look good next to as she's perpetually done up and would be classed as 'fit' by most

I don't like it but not because it is mumsy. I just don't like that style of top. Sorry🙂

That is a perfectly lovely outfit. Wtf does ‘mumsy’ even mean these days?

Hot momma more like. Mumsy to me is used as a negative term - frumpy. Your outfit is not frumpy at all.

Report
Jumpalicious · 17/07/2021 14:19

Maybe it’s the soft “baby pink” that made her say that? Ie it makes you look gentle - so mumsy in that sense? I think you look lovely. Oh but the tie at the front does make it look a bit like a pregnancy top (hence mumsy vibe, again?). Tie at side as pp said?

There's nothing wrong with you or the jeans but the shirt is horrible. Ditch the belt, wear it open with a moderately fitted vest under. Or get something in a better colour.
Don't be offended. You're already doing well. Just upgrade the shirt.
