If Monty Don was a woman....

Where would he shop?

I really want some lovely cotton or linen stuff, in my mind I see a loose fitting linen jumpsuit with scrappy straps and a side zip. It wouldn't be 'fashion' or ridiculously wide or show a silly amount of side boob. Simple and not humongous.

I search everywhere and can never find what im after, I can't be fussed with trends, but want some more choice. I used to like toast but they fit me horribly and the colour palettes don't suit me.

Are there any shops I don't know about that can do me a Monty style wardrobe? Natural fabrics that could see me gardening or walking by the lake, etc...

Here it is. Very dull indeed

MayIDestroyYou · 30/06/2021 11:50

Oh! Nice. It's actually a great, (garden coloured!) background for jewels and colourful or richly patterned accessories. (Is that a bustle at the side, or your laundry pile? Can't tell from the angle of the photo.)

Don't suppose you happen to have a very lightweight, tapestry covered coat loitering in a cupboard?

Zebracat · 30/06/2021 12:08

Well, I bought it because the real dress didn’t fit, but I’d already bought this, which I love; roses are my passion. Plain tan sandals, straw hat and bag. I will feel like me, just feel even self abnegating women can spend more on themselves for their daughters wedding.
Feel bad fo4 derailing but maybe Monty would wear these?

I spotted this thread last night and had bookmarked it to work through on my day off today. Thank you to all for a lovely meander through some great links! I think Monty's female equivalent would be Sarah Raven. I love her crumpled linen look. (I also deeply envy her house, garden, life and family connections.)

I've had a few pieces from Cabbages and Roses over the years and have loved them all. I think they lost their way about 5 years ago and seemed to try to aim for a more mass market, with cheaper, less individual stuff, but I'm glad to see they've returned to their roots now.

This is a good place for linen pieces, though I don't know if Brexit has made it more difficult to buy from. I've been eyeing the linen boiler suit for a while but am now put off by the possibility of taxes and a 3 month wait for things to get through customs. seasidetones.com/en_GB/c/All/35

MayIDestroyYou · 30/06/2021 15:21

I'm not myself a great seeker after linen garments. Much prefer Winter dressing - the corduroy, Shetland wool and Harris tweed components of a fantasy Don-esque wardrobe. For general wear my ideal would be artfully crumpled translated by the great designers of the day - the things Stella Tennant would have kept after a Vogue photo shoot. With emeralds. And ridiculous, delicate shoes worn with bright silk, falling down socks.

If Monty Don was a woman....
Zebracat · 30/06/2021 15:26

Oh , need bright silk falling down socks now.

TheTeaFairy · 30/06/2021 15:59

Try emailing, @WeirdArchitecture - it's a very small company. When I bought my jumpsuit (same as the one you posted but blue), they had sold out in my size. I emailed to ask if they would be making any more; a few emails later and I received a message out of the blue to say they had found one in the stock room. It's the best item of clothing I've ever had! Smile

marmitecravings · 30/06/2021 16:06

@TheWoollybacksWife

Thought? The Erin jumpsuit might fit the bill although the zip is centre back rather than at the side.
All i know is he would most certainly shop at lidl and use marks and sparks grocery bags as he shamefully shuffles to the car park.
marmitecravings · 30/06/2021 16:07

clothes wise he would still wear episode and laura ashley

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 30/06/2021 16:07

love the idea of bright silk falling-down socks!

I have dug out my gorgeous Harris tweed jacket, bought from ebay for a snip, on the back of your post, @MayIDestroyYou. It's a bit big on the shoulders but I'm telling myself that adds to the artful crumpling...

SaffyWall · 30/06/2021 16:14

Just adding Plumo to the list - not much linen but some beautiful fabrics and shapes.

www.plumo.com

Also the Marimekko range at Uniqlo is worth a look.

Oh wow - does that make me an Influencer? Forget gardening (pah!) - I want my $$$ Netflix deal, free designer stuff and team of eager PAs right now!

Zebracat · 30/06/2021 16:53

@MayIDestroyYou I would definitely follow you.

Grin yeah I reckon it does!
PeacheyPeach · 30/06/2021 17:02

I love this thread 😍 apart from Toast, cabbages and roses and Brora I have never heard of any of the other companies you guys have linked how do you all get to know about them in the first place!?
I love the charity shops for picking up expensive pieces, actually kicking myself for the long linen kaftan i didn't buy last week I don't know why I left it!
I always end up gardening in my PJ's almost always in my dressing gown! My poor neighbors!

Peach1886 · 30/06/2021 17:06

Yesterday I came across a company called Lucy and Yak who make dungarees - gorgeous - and I also really like Gudrun Sjoden's designs...can be wafty and fairylike or more sturdy and understated depending on how you wear it. I mention her stuff on here a lot, I don't work for her just wish I could afford more of it!

Lovely thread OP, I'm so tempted to message Monty Don on twitter saying what we've been discussing...the wry smile would be much in evidence methinks Grin

Also www.linenperson.com/towear - beautifully made dresses, shirts and skirts from a one-woman company in Cumbria.

PeacheyPeach · 30/06/2021 17:43

What do you think female Monty wears in the winter months, cashmere knits with wide leg wool trousers?

This lady set up her previous company called The Linen Press, I’ve got some fabulous items purchased a few years ago. Highly recommend.🙂
Peach1886 · 30/06/2021 18:54

@Tomasinabombadil, yep that's the one...I've got lots of them too, really pleased to see she's back in business!

WeirdArchitecture · 30/06/2021 19:15

Just googled Sarah Raven as hadn't heard of her.
Her wiki page describes her father has having been a 'classic Don'
Thought that was amusing....

.....also initially read it as 'classic Dom', lol.

Peach1886 · 01/07/2021 08:14

I've just looked, she has some trousers in the sale that would make a fab suit with that coat dress and a silk shirt...all I need now is somewhere to go to wear them Grin
