If Monty Don was a woman....

Where would he shop?

I really want some lovely cotton or linen stuff, in my mind I see a loose fitting linen jumpsuit with scrappy straps and a side zip. It wouldn't be 'fashion' or ridiculously wide or show a silly amount of side boob. Simple and not humongous.

I search everywhere and can never find what im after, I can't be fussed with trends, but want some more choice. I used to like toast but they fit me horribly and the colour palettes don't suit me.

Are there any shops I don't know about that can do me a Monty style wardrobe? Natural fabrics that could see me gardening or walking by the lake, etc...

Years and years ago, when I was living an Edmontine Don life in the country, I used to shop at Droopy & Browns - which no one now will remember. It was the ultimate Cabbages / Cawley mash-up, with an added dash of hauteur. If anyone had told me they would eventually go out of business I'd have wrapped every piece in tissue paper and stored it in a bank vault. Sad

I remember Droopy and Browns, and still have several things from them in my wardrobe.

It felt like I was spending a fortune on work suits there, but they were utterly wonderful. And my going away dress came from there and I still love it!

It's not quite the same, but if you liked them, check out www.suzyhamilton.co.uk
@WeirdArchitecture are you originally from the highlands/Shetland by any chance? I don’t think that most posters will know what a Gansey is!

They do great ones here www.shetlandknitwear.com/
Oh no, but I wish! I'm originally from near manchester now in Lakes:)

@thecatfromjapan
I think a lot of people would like to dress that way but perhaps don't have the courage, I kind of imagine myself as a rural recluse, perhaps a bit older, flapping around my own farm wearing these clothes. How they'd translate to reality or urban life is another thing altogether, so I guess it depends upon your lifestyle rather than your imagined world (mine is very C&B) Grin

Speaking of urban life - I'm intrigued, EdithWeston, at your wearing Droopy & Brown for work. I once made the mistake of taking one of their beautiful checked cotton shirts (it had either a sailor collar or a huge neck tie, possibly both) back to London for my weekday City life. I felt horribly self conscious and wrong. It was very definitely my rural wardrobe!

Would you say he's like the male Charlie Dimmock? Where does she shop?

ToManderleyAgain · 26/06/2021 20:10

Poetry might have some things to suit as well www.poetryfashion.co.uk

Usually some good linen bits in Seasalt.

dementedma · 26/06/2021 20:21

Some of this stuff is hideous and crazy prices. Pay a fortune to wear a sack? Glad its out of my budget. ( disclaimer: I admit to having no fashion sense whatsoever so clearly missing something here)

You're missing the romance, dementedma.

Roake Studios do beautiful hand-made jumpsuits, wrap tops and wrap dresses, might be worth having a look at them? Smile

some of it's lovely, I think, but I can see your point. Agree about the prices.

I’ve never bought from either of these places, but I do love a lot of the clothes:

Third for the Carrier Company. I dress like Monty Don, for work, and most of the time for the same sort of job. This is the best thread I've ever seen on MN ta!
