If Monty Don was a woman....

Where would he shop?

I really want some lovely cotton or linen stuff, in my mind I see a loose fitting linen jumpsuit with scrappy straps and a side zip. It wouldn't be 'fashion' or ridiculously wide or show a silly amount of side boob. Simple and not humongous.

I search everywhere and can never find what im after, I can't be fussed with trends, but want some more choice. I used to like toast but they fit me horribly and the colour palettes don't suit me.

Are there any shops I don't know about that can do me a Monty style wardrobe? Natural fabrics that could see me gardening or walking by the lake, etc...

Thought? The Erin jumpsuit might fit the bill although the zip is centre back rather than at the side.

really lovely! thank you!

Try STALF. I’ve had several pairs of trousers, a jumpsuit and a skirt and the quality is lovely. And so hardwearing too.

MayIDestroyYou · 26/06/2021 17:25

I was going to suggest Old Town for non-fashion-y, crunchy linen and cotton.

I'd imagine a female Monty Don would shop at Margaret Howell - (s)he'd have the colouring and the budget.

TheSpottedZebra · 26/06/2021 17:29

I'm sure that Monty DOES wear Old Town stuff. As well as possibly www.carriercompany.co.uk/collections/womens

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/06/2021 17:49

Sideline have really nice things in that vein.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/06/2021 17:51

A lot of his jackets are Carhartt

Community Clothing?

Itscoldouthere · 26/06/2021 18:03

My DH dresses in a similar way (when he’s not wearing sportswear).
Old Town, Toast, Margaret Howell, Norse Projects, Universal Works, Folk some of them are just menswear but some both.
I’m a big fan of the Old Town Bungalow dress.

Itscoldouthere · 26/06/2021 18:05

I’ve also found some nice simple things in John Lewis Kin (think it’s their own brand) and of course Cos

Cabbages and Roses?

I put in the link in case you think I'm being humorous about gardening!

These are great, thanks so much, am enjoying searching through them now!

There was a shop someone linked to last year that I can't remember, they sold hand knitted ganseys and some great hard wearing shirts. Wish I could recall it.

Margaret Howell, no question.

cungryhow · 26/06/2021 18:22

Agree with Thought and also think Monty might like a bit of the non patterned Nomads stuff.

Olive?

WeirdArchitecture · 26/06/2021 18:55

I really adore the cabbages and roses stuff, but if those models are 5'11 then most of it would bury me alive. Anyone have experience with them?
Super expensive, remind me of a more whimsical, heritage kinda Margaret Howell.

Olive really lovely too.
I wish I was tall enough to pull of this style skirts and dresses. I am 5'4, so not tiny, but Toast dresses swamp me so I guess this style isn't really me.
I adore the knits and shirts though.

Toast?
Lands End?

MayIDestroyYou · 26/06/2021 19:01

Edmontine Don is going to a wedding. I have such immoderate love for this brand - they're truly committed to crunchy.

Had completely forgotten Cabbages except as a purveyor of flowery bed linen!

GlubGlubGlub · 26/06/2021 19:03

@WeirdArchitecture are you originally from the highlands/Shetland by any chance? I don’t think that most posters will know what a Gansey is!

They do great ones here www.shetlandknitwear.com/

I think this has been my favourite S&B thread this year. I'm loving the links and posting to bump for more!

@WeirdArchitecture

I've bought two dresses from C and R over the years.

I'm a plump, short person.

The first was my favourite dress ever. It was a sleeveless, ankle-length dress. I loved it. Loved it.

I bought a second dress and thought it swamped me, so returned it.

I made the mistake of showing a friend a picture of a dress I was thinking of buying and she completely mocked me. I mean, as you can see, the clothing isn't really fashion-y - but that's as much a positive as a negative.

Anyway, that put me off for a long time.

And then I remembered that loads of people complimented the first dress. They really did. I remember one person saying, 'I really wish I was wearing what you're wearing right now. It's just so perfect.'

And I knew what she meant. It was a hot, sunny day and the dress was cool and easy to wear and just exuded a happy, summer feeling.

(Yes, I know. But I loved that dress.)

I'm thinking about buying a third. But I'm prepared to do some trying-on first.

(And, yes, I know it's not very MN to be put off by other people's opinions. But, there we go ...)

I think you do have to try the clothes on.
