Has anyone grown out the grey and then gone back to dyeing?

My hair is completely natural now, it's virtually white, but I have a suspicion it's really ageing me. I'm only 52, and I don't want to look like a well preserved pensioner!
I dyed it for years as the greys started early but the recent years ended up with some gingery/ brassy colours that were terrible.
I've been with my hair salon for 20 years and I love them but I wonder if I need to change. I've tried and failed to attach a photo, I'll try in a new comment box

OP, I think your hair looks beautiful as it is, not ageing in the least, although I do agree a trim/cut is needed. I am most envious as despite not dying my hair since last February, my grey has only come in in patches, so can not leave it as it is.

I don't think brown highlights (or lowlights in this instance) will look good at all. Personally, if I had your hair, I would opt for some silver white highlights as it will lift the colour wonderfully - see Sarah Harris (Vogue) for colour inspiration.

This is my hair now. Trying to resist the temptation to start colouring again.

I'm 40 with natural dark hair, no dye, lots of grey. Wondering how this works - If I look 55 now, will I just look 55 for the next 15 years? Or will I look 70 by the time I'm 55?
I should see if I can get a pensioner discount on things.

Dubbe, I think the most important thing is that you look like you, and if that's colour then you know best. I think you look the same age in both pics and the natural hair is way cooler and edgier and striking. But not everyone wants to look edgy and cool and it can feel like a statement or being "brave" and rebellious to go natural. Again, not everyone wants this vibe.
I will never dye my hair again and it has changed my perspective but honestly, if I could have naturally grey-free hair for another decade, I probably would. And I quite like the "done-up look in every other respect of my life (make up, brows, heels) so I kind of miss tinkering with my hair colour in that respect.

Blue you would be quite mad to colour that!

Cocolapew · 06/04/2021 11:34

Oh no Blue don't dye that its gorgeous!

PuppyMonkey · 06/04/2021 12:15

I’m about nine months into growing my dark hair out. I thought it would look ridiculous in this growing out phase because of the obvious demarcation line but I’m surprised how it’s all blending together. People have asked me if I’ve had it dyed like that on purpose like a grombre thing.Grin

I’m 55 in October so phew, I’m allowed to carry on according to pp.Grin

Has anyone grown out the grey and then gone back to dyeing?
Cocolapew · 06/04/2021 12:59

That's really good blending! Looks lovely

TakeTheRibbonFromYourHair · 06/04/2021 13:24

Puppy Monkey - really lovely colour, I can tell already it suits you better than a dyed look. And if not now, when?

Thankyou! I think if you are blonde to begin with it makes going grey easier

Thankyou I think I just need a sharp cut
workshy44 · 06/04/2021 14:10

PuppyMonkey you have seriously young looking skin. I think your hair makes you look your age, I think without grey probably 10 years younger. In saying that it is a v dark grey which I don't think is as aging as the op's
LOVE the cut too, v cool

PuppyMonkey · 06/04/2021 14:14

Cheers folks!

blue1000 · 06/04/2021 14:26

@PuppyMonkey

Cheers folks!
Your hair looks in great condition and I think the colour is lovely too.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/04/2021 14:42

OP you have a lovely natural colour, but yes I think it will be aging you for the moment (if you care!) and I would maybe go blonde for another 10 years, by which time the same silver will not age you.

woodhill · 06/04/2021 14:54

I'm a similar age to OP and have grown mine out but not sure.

I don't think I look particularly old with it though and think you look fine OP.

Sometimes the dark block hair dye makes people look older imo.

I've got used to it to some extent

I agree with this
Northernsoullover · 06/04/2021 15:28

All of you that look stunning with grey hair don't have salt and pepper. I have a grey streak at the front and it looks messy. I'll stop highlighting when I get more grey but not a second before.

DianaT1969 · 06/04/2021 17:58

PuppyMonkey - I love your colour! It's shiny too. You probably have the easiest and most flattering transition of anyone I've seen.

PuppyMonkey · 06/04/2021 18:48

Aww thank you @DianaT1969 Smile

Btw OP, I think those who are saying it’ll age you etc etc can’t possibly know that from the pic you posted, as we can’t even see your whole face.Confused

GreenVaseline · 06/04/2021 18:53

I think long grey hair can look great. Has anyone seen Silver Foxy on YouTube?

Cocolapew · 06/04/2021 19:04

From the little bit I can see it looks like you have lovely skin balzamico Easter Envy

Same here. I'm only 45 and feel terrified of stopping the dying and actually seeing all the grey hair in a skunk like streak in the middle of my head 😬

Can I ask how old you are?

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 06/04/2021 19:54

i've just bought some of the head and shoulders recommended above, thanks

tinkywinkyshandbag · 06/04/2021 19:56

I think a lot depends on the cut and how you dress/do your makeup etc. So grey in itself is not necessarily ageing. I think some highlights might be nice too. I've grown mine out but still have quite a lot of darker hair especially at the back, yours is lovely and even.

Cocolapew · 06/04/2021 19:59

I'm still really dark at the back, it's very few people who go pure white straight away. Everyone has a bit of badger DNA in them Grin
