Has anyone grown out the grey and then gone back to dyeing?

My hair is completely natural now, it's virtually white, but I have a suspicion it's really ageing me. I'm only 52, and I don't want to look like a well preserved pensioner!
I dyed it for years as the greys started early but the recent years ended up with some gingery/ brassy colours that were terrible.
I've been with my hair salon for 20 years and I love them but I wonder if I need to change. I've tried and failed to attach a photo, I'll try in a new comment box

Thanks @VanGoghsDog - that's useful to know and something I can discuss with my hairdresser.

VanGogh it’s that dirty colour I object to. My hair is a cool dark brown (almost black) and the greys turn it almost khaki. I gave up when I had to start pre-softening to get the colour to take. If you’re having lowlights I’m guessing you don’t need that.

VanGoghsDog · 14/04/2021 12:29

I've never heard of pre softening. I think I must have quite porous hair because despite being thin and fine it takes ages to dry. So maybe it takes dye well too?

Yes, I dislike that it just looks dirty and sort of faded overall. If I had lovely white silvery hair I'd be fine with it.

I was having to have mine presoftened the last year or so of dyeing as the dye wasn't taking - something to do with the amount of greys and that I was no longer going lighter I think!

I've grown mine out and really miss my dyed hair. It's grown longer and is in far better condition and the colour is OK, quite a lot of grey but looks blonde until you get close). It's just so ordinary though, it was bright red for years and I feel boring now.

StillMedusa · 15/04/2021 23:32

53 here.. and whatever I do to my hair my face says I'm in my 50s !
Mine was brown and the back still is brown, but the top and side bits are mostly grey. I stopped dying it nearly 4 years ago after a nasty reaction to the dye.
Thanks to covid it's long... boob length and streaked with grey. Nice friends say it looks like highlights. I think I look like a skinny Hagrid. I wish it would all go silver but as my Mum isn't much greyer than me, I suspect I have a while to wait.
But it's in better condition than it ever was dyed. I miss my 'old' colour but wil never go back to dying it..no roots, no dryness.

I can't wait for a cut however... next weekend!

Its nice, you've spent all that time growing it out it woukd be a shame to start again.

Maybe a more modern cut and some neutralising shampoo or highlights x

@Dubbe, the cut in the white haired picture is lovely, the layers really suit you.
