Can we have a Mumsnet campaign about girls’ shorts?

I am So. Fed. Up. of trying to find girls’ shorts that do more than cover their arse cheeks (okay, I’m exaggerating here, but not by much). I don’t want to pay £40 on some North London mummy designer shorts hand sewn by nuns, I just want to order from M&S, or H&M or any high street shop some shorts that are a decent length. And yes, I could just buy some from the boys’ section (and I have done) but why can’t I get bright colours and nice prints in the boys’ section?

Perhaps I should have put this in AIBU.

Alternatively- do you have any recommendations for high street shops with decent length shorts for girls?

Try Monsoon, Gap, Uniqlo, Boden, Decathlon, Mountain Warehouse, George (probably other supermarkets too), Next, La Redoute. And more

If you google 'girls Bermuda shorts' rather than just 'girls shorts' you'll get far more hits of the sort of thing you seek

Purpleblondelady · 02/04/2021 09:28

I feel the same! And girls shorts are always pastel colours. Last summer I bought my DD some boys shorts. I have bought a couple of pairs from M&M Direct this year, but one pair is polyestery and I don't think she'll wear them.

scully29 · 02/04/2021 09:29

I agree, tried to find shorts for my daughter yesterday online and had to say, no to so many as they are as short as knickers!

NotOnMute · 02/04/2021 09:29

Lands End did some last year, but I basically agree. It’s hard to find mid-thigh or even knee-length, loose shorts for a girl who has hips and / or doesn’t want to be teased for wearing ‘boys’ clothes’ (I know, it should be that all clothes are for all children, but that’s not the way it works in the playground).

DIshedUp · 02/04/2021 09:31

In all honesty though I've always thought boys shorts are too long, the point of shorts is to keep your legs cool yet half of them are covered in jogger fabric?

Can you buy her some in the boys section?

SinusOhSinus · 02/04/2021 09:33

The last few summers I have bought these for my daughter, after having given up in the girls section

missmoon · 02/04/2021 09:36

I think Uniqlo used to do longer girls’ shorts.

Purpleblondelady · 02/04/2021 09:51

I bought these for my 9 year old, she likes these ones-

These are the ones that I don't think she'll wear much-

M&M seem to have more since I looked last week

GlacindaTheTroll · 02/04/2021 09:54

Has everyone be used 'hide poster' against me?

I've just listed quite a selection of places which have longer length shorts in stock right now - are none of them to anyone's liking?

Notonthestairs · 02/04/2021 09:58

I've ordered boys and girls shorts from Boden this week - the girls versions are most definitely short shorts.

Anjelika · 02/04/2021 10:01

I buy the girls longer denim pair that Boden seem to stock every year and last year I bought some Slazenger ones from Sports Direct very cheaply which are a lightweight jersey with pockets and my daughter lives in those 3 pairs. The Slazenger ones were boys shorts I think. Good tip to search for Bermuda shorts though. Might try that.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 02/04/2021 10:04

Glacinda panic not, I’m only just getting back to this thread! Thank you all for the suggestions.

Boden are too expensive (and mostly short shorts when I looked) unless I can get them in the sale (they’re mostly going to be worn for holiday club and messing about so I don’t want to spend £££) but I hadn’t thought of Monsoon or Uniqlo, which is mad as I buy quite a bit of my own stuff in Uniqlo. Decathlon also good but a bit sporty to buy all her stuff from there if you see what I mean?

The boys’ H&M shorts someone linked to are similar to those I’ve bought from the boys section before. It shouldn’t be so difficult!

If you don't have any luck on the high st, La Redoute seem to have decent length girls shorts.

lavenderlou · 02/04/2021 17:06

My DD (11) has H&M jersey shorts and they aren't too short - they certainly don't show her bum. Cycling shorts are back in fashion so you could order those!

lavenderlou · 02/04/2021 17:10

Some of the tie-waist options also come up longer.

RandomUsernameHere · 02/04/2021 17:14

Sports Direct has a good range

IndecentFeminist · 02/04/2021 17:17

Yup, long been a bug bear of mine. I tend to go to Fat Face, Boden etc.

A lot of the supposed sportier brands like Fat Face do longer lengths.

Susannahmoody · 02/04/2021 17:18

In general, girls clothes are far poorer quality than boys. And it's hard to find joggers for girls.

sarahc336 · 02/04/2021 17:21

I saw sone mid thigh length ones in Tesco today op x

Gumandbass · 02/04/2021 17:23

My sister got some nice ones for niece from Tesco.

FreeButtonBee · 02/04/2021 17:26

I’m with you. I’ve taken to sewing my DD shorts but realise that is a drastic step and I should just be able to buy some above knee shorts in pink or yellow from M&S without having to bloody cut the fabric out myself...

Meredusoleil · 02/04/2021 17:28

I have had this problem for years. So now what I do is cut dd2's outgrown jeans/treggings down to about knee length and then roll them up once or twice to straighten them up 👌🏼

Theunamedcat · 02/04/2021 17:34

Its been like this for years to the degree that I always used to buy my daughter 3/4 leggings for summer or boy shorts
