Can we have a Mumsnet campaign about girls’ shorts?

I am So. Fed. Up. of trying to find girls’ shorts that do more than cover their arse cheeks (okay, I’m exaggerating here, but not by much). I don’t want to pay £40 on some North London mummy designer shorts hand sewn by nuns, I just want to order from M&S, or H&M or any high street shop some shorts that are a decent length. And yes, I could just buy some from the boys’ section (and I have done) but why can’t I get bright colours and nice prints in the boys’ section?

Perhaps I should have put this in AIBU.

Alternatively- do you have any recommendations for high street shops with decent length shorts for girls?

I think the children’s clothing designs are based on what’s in fashion for adults. So the clothes in the boys section are versions of the mens and the clothes in the girls section are versions of the womens.

Mine used to shop across both sections and I’d just snip out any tags with boy/girl. Doesn’t work now their older as they want to wear what people on TikTok their peers are wearing.

Fortunately cycling shorts and oversized T-shirt’s/hoodies have made a fashion comeback, so DD is sorted for another year.

now they’re* older Blush

To be fair H&M sell shorts of all lengths, I've always found them ample for arse coverage with my girls. Here's an example of longer ones www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0893949003.html

Phineyj · 02/04/2021 17:53

Next ones are decent and come in packs of 5 (at least, that was the case last year). I actually find their Jersey ones made great pyjama shorts too. I've also done the previous poster's tip of using last year's 3/4 length leggings.

The main issue we've had is DD is like a tube and anything of the correct length falls down...

Also hate that all tops are cropped at the moment.

Knickers are about the only clothes I buy for my daughter in the girls section. Nearly everything else I get her is from the boys section.

Tweetypietwo · 02/04/2021 18:22

Zara and Mango do decent length shorts and different styles

Mellonsprite · 02/04/2021 19:33

I got some Mid thigh denim ones for DD11 from next

Buttybach · 02/04/2021 19:36

I hate this too. For denim shorts I just get boys ones. Last year I got DD cycling shorts from George at Asda that were great I'm going back there this year. Next also do multi packs of shorts that are loose and a good length

Frogartist · 02/04/2021 20:08

@Susannahmoody

In general, girls clothes are far poorer quality than boys. And it's hard to find joggers for girls.
Yes, shorts are too short, t-shirts too short and tight, knickers much thinner fabric and have less coverage than boys' pants.
sweetkitty · 02/04/2021 20:20

I posted the exact same post last year, after 3 girls I was fed up of it. DD3 wanted shorts that weren’t up her bum (her choice of words) she was a tall 11 year old and didn’t want the typical hot pant style but didn’t want boys shorts like her brother. I think I ended up getting some in Lands End (costly I know) and H&M. I also remember a poster saying it was ridiculous she had boy/girl 2 year old twins, the boys shorts were knee length the girls night night shorter, why?

simonthedog · 02/04/2021 20:26

Last year I bought DD2(8) a white boys denim pair and a lovely pale green boys cotton pair from Next. Both pairs are lovely and long, much longer than the equivalents in the girls section.

Purpleblondelady · 02/04/2021 21:12

I've bought some from Mountain Warehouse today, hopefully they won't be too short, but not knee length either.

Littleguggi · 02/04/2021 21:14

I much prefer fitted cycling shorts that are knee length or just above the knee for my girls!

TechnoDino · 02/04/2021 21:18

I’ve been buying the majority of my non girly DD’s clothes from H&M boys’ section since she was in y6. Better style and quality than girls’.

RandomUsernameHere · 02/04/2021 21:29

Completely agree with the PP that said kids' clothing designs are a reflection of what's in fashion for adults. It's hard to find women's shorts nowadays that don't look like nappies!

Sunbelievable · 02/04/2021 21:35

Having just discovered photographs of my DH wearing VERY short shorts as a small boy in the early 1970s, are we sure we're not projecting onto children today. Why were very short shorts and frilly knickers on show for girls under what were frankly tops rather than dresses in the 70s okay, and yet now we put boys in knee length stuff and the girl mums are the ones scrambling around wanting knee length stuff too to match?

SaltyAF · 02/04/2021 21:40

I just don't see the problem with those girls' shorts in your link. I find it hard to get cool and comfy shorts for DS. They all seem to be thick jersey or denim and cover him to his knees.

It's not true to say that ordinary girls' shorts barely cover their bums.

NellietheNumpty · 02/04/2021 21:43

I often buy girls summer pjs to be worn as daywear for my tall daughters.

I agree. Nothing wrong with the photos and links posted 🤷🏻‍♀️

But so what if our children of either sex are in shorts "not covering their bums"? They are children 🙄 What does it matter?
