Can we have a Mumsnet campaign about girls’ shorts?

I am So. Fed. Up. of trying to find girls’ shorts that do more than cover their arse cheeks (okay, I’m exaggerating here, but not by much). I don’t want to pay £40 on some North London mummy designer shorts hand sewn by nuns, I just want to order from M&S, or H&M or any high street shop some shorts that are a decent length. And yes, I could just buy some from the boys’ section (and I have done) but why can’t I get bright colours and nice prints in the boys’ section?

Perhaps I should have put this in AIBU.

Alternatively- do you have any recommendations for high street shops with decent length shorts for girls?

I buy DD boys shorts from Tesco or Matalan. Decent length and the pockets are either really good or excellent and zipped. Most shorts aimed at 8 yo girls seem to be frighteningly short.

SaltyAF That’s great that you don’t have any trouble finding the right sort of shorts. I do, but dd1 has quite a few preferences (not from boys section because of fit, soft material ie not denim or crisp cotton, baggy rather than tight or tailored, not looking babyish) which I do find hard to cater for. This thread is useful as it’s given me some more ideas of where to shop, especially for dd2 who is less precise about her shorts preferences.

However, I do still find it annoying that in most shops the boys shorts will be longer, baggier and have pockets, and girls shorts will be on average tighter, shorter and pocketless.

As a mum to a 4 year old boy who is small for his age, I mostly buy him girls leggings, trousers and shorts because the waist on boys clothes won't stay up unless it has a very adjustable elastic or drawstring. He likes a range of different colours so we're fine at the moment, but I wish we could have 'children's clothes' (with a wider range of styles, colours, patterns) because I do worry about the effects of rather rigid gender stereotypes (subconsciously being taught) from a young age.
