Trainers after 40?

Mumoflil1 · 28/12/2020 18:42

Hi all,

So I hit the big 4-0 next week.

So, over lockdown whilst working from home, my 'style' (if I did have any Grin) has completely gone and now I go mostly everywhere in trainers. But as I get to 40 I wonder if I'm too old for them? What do people think? If you do think acceptable, what types do you suggest for us 40+ ladies. I really am clueless Confused Also, any other lockdown wardrobe tips would be fab x

@scentedgeranium

I'm interested in this thread. I have some old black nikes (don't know their name!) and want some really good and everyday stylish trainers. I wear Hokas for my tennis so need a step down from that level of seriousness. Something to wear with jeans or skirts or whatever. Been looking at Vejas. Can anyone recommend? And OP, I don't think you're seriously consigning yourself to the dustbin of style at the age of 40. But at 54 I would say that!
Vejas are very narrow and quite hard to break in, so if you are delicate of foot and don't mind a bit of pain they're fine Grin
scentedgeranium · 01/01/2021 09:01

@TwirlingTwizzler ooops
I just ordered some! Literally just before I saw your advice! In a Toast sale. My feet are quite narrow. But oh dear!

BadEyeBri · 01/01/2021 09:23

40 in Oct. new pair of Nike Air Max 95s every year for the last 10ish years. Go forth and trainer!

Ginfordinner · 01/01/2021 09:27

@ItMustBeBedtimeSurely

Are you joking?? Any trainers you like, jesus, you're only 40.
This ^^ I'm 62 and still wear trainers with jeans.
julieandertoninthewarehouse · 01/01/2021 09:28

I've worn trainers more post 40 than I ever did before. Of course you aren't too old.

megletthesecond · 01/01/2021 09:38

I'm 46 and wear Nike internationalists. I buy a different colour every 18 months.
They're not flat so I can pick up speed and run in them if I'm running late.
Fashion trainers never look as comfy to me.

Londontown12 · 01/01/2021 15:07

@scentedgeranium not all Veja’s are narrow I wear the Veja a v10s and they are wide I love em they go with everything !! X

caperplips · 01/01/2021 15:13

I'm considerably older than you OP & I've worn New Balance for the past 10 years or so. I have plum ones currently & considering bottke green next
I also have a pair of OPP trainers in white for summer

uncomfortablydumb53 · 01/01/2021 16:49

I'm 56 and I have 2 pairs of Adidas superstars!! Granted, they're both a cream/ beige colour rather than bright white but I wear them lots
Wear whatever you're comfortable in and with

binkyblinky · 01/01/2021 17:29

I'm 42 and I collect shoes, I've 7 pairs of vans, 9 pairs of docs and 19 pairs of converse. You are never too old. Be yourself and stuff others!

In the sale a bought pink platform winter vans, they are gorgeous!

quirkychick · 01/01/2021 17:40

What is this "too old", of which you speak?

Seriously, though, if it suits you, your lifestyle, you can afford and you like it - why not?

I'm 50 and have quite a few trainers of various types: metallic hi tops, missoni print converse, red leather, blue addidas... I walk lots and I like them.

Takeitonthechin · 01/01/2021 18:25

Nooooooooooo you're not too old, I'm older than you and still wear them and if I'm still around at 90, I'll still be wearing them, I couldn't care less what ppl think, I wasn't put on this earth to be a ppl pleaser.Smile

ZenNudist · 01/01/2021 18:28

Dm in her 70s wears trainers. Really bemused that would be off limits to the over 40s.

ChipsAndKetchup · 01/01/2021 18:30

I'm over 40. Should I be buying my shoes from the adverts in the newspaper now?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/01/2021 18:32

50+ and happy in my trainers for another 30+ years 🤷‍♀️

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 01/01/2021 21:14

Occupational Therapists, physiotherapists and podiatrists would far rather their adult clients/patients kept wearing trainers their whole lives, as their feet are healthier and they're less likely to have falls as they age.

Wear what you damn well want.

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/01/2021 21:16

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

Sick of seeing threads that promote ageist ideas about clothes and style.

There isn't some magical moment were the clock strikes 12 and you must surrender everything you ever loved, get a blue rinse, and don a twin set and pearls and some practical slacks.

I am 40 shortly. It would never occur to me, not in a million years, that I was not ALLOWED to wear anything.

I will wear what the fuck I want til the day I die.

Precisely. I’m already 40 and pear shaped but am about to buy my first ever cropped t-shirt. Am quite excited about it
TheFormidableMrsC · 01/01/2021 21:16

Are you kidding me? I'm 51 and have an enormous trainer collection. Every style and colour you can imagine. You are most certainly not too old at 40! I've just bought some animal print ones in the sales Smile

Tigerstripe20 · 01/01/2021 22:12

I wear Nike Tanjun , converse are a bit flat for me now and hurt my feet
Tend to get on with Nike over others, but I have wide feet
I do have Adidas pharell Hu for the summer
I go for plain colours not a fan of animal print personally
Pre COVID used to travel to the USA a lot and love the older ladies who rock their NB trainers !

My birth certificate suggests I am 53 😊😁

Nat6999 · 01/01/2021 22:38

I'm 54 & wear Adidas Court for every day, I suffer from wide flat feet & they are the best thing for my feet, I also have Adidas Gazelles in pink & blue to wear with Jeans.

Supersimkin2 · 01/01/2021 22:42

Even Kate Middleton wears trainers and she dresses older than her MIL.

uggmum · 01/01/2021 22:48

I have just ordered these from John Lewis, £65.

Thought I could get away with wearing them with dresses as well as jeans and leggings
