Trainers after 40?

Mumoflil1 · 28/12/2020 18:42

Hi all,

So I hit the big 4-0 next week.

So, over lockdown whilst working from home, my 'style' (if I did have any Grin) has completely gone and now I go mostly everywhere in trainers. But as I get to 40 I wonder if I'm too old for them? What do people think? If you do think acceptable, what types do you suggest for us 40+ ladies. I really am clueless Confused Also, any other lockdown wardrobe tips would be fab x

When I turned 40 I immediately went out and got myself a pair of these. I didn't want to risk looking like a deranged flibbertigibbet wearing clothes designed for the under-40s.

SuePreem · 28/12/2020 19:25

yes I think you need to start wearing fitflops right away .

Justmuddlingalong · 28/12/2020 19:26

Wear exactly what you want, before you know it you'll be in velcro, bootie slippers.

Mumoflil1 · 28/12/2020 19:28

Nah @blackvillain, just after being stuck in hoodies and sweats since working from home, be nice to look and feel a bit smarter. I had a baby last year, I ended things with my partner, Christmas is over.. and I'd like to treat myself to some new bits to celebrate my 40th. I don't know how many trainers I have and was thinking about treating myself to a new pair so asked this light hearted question. But omg, some people have read sooooo deep into this.

I’m 42 and love trainers! I got these recently in the Nike sale 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Go forth and wear whatever you feel comfortable in!

Seriously, I didn’t start wearing them till I was almost 40, well if you don’t include my Fila boots and Nike air jordans in the 90s 😀 Now I live out of them. Long gone are my sexy stiletto heals I once lived out of 🥲

Isolatedizzy · 28/12/2020 19:31

54 year old here - Air Max 90's

Mumoflil1 · 28/12/2020 19:32

I LOVE those @snowfallsnowball all of my trainers are bright and loud - loving your style

I’m nearly 45 and my current favourites are the Veja v10s very stylish and literally go with everything I have them in white and black and a white and maroon colour way ! Highly recommend very ethical and they do them in vegan and leather x

Benjispruce2 · 28/12/2020 19:34

Well I’m nearly 50 and often wear trainers. 40 is no age to be curtailing your wardrobe!

AcornAutumn · 28/12/2020 19:34

What a bizarre thought.

I can't make any suggestions for trainers for your age, no. I buy the trainers I like and can afford.

SnowfallSnowball · 28/12/2020 19:35

Ahh thanks @Mumoflil1. I managed to get both of those for £70, bargain! Helps that I can buy junior sizes too! 🤣
Yeah same, brighter the better! ☺️

DelurkingAJ · 28/12/2020 19:38

My DDad was forced into trainers by his orthopaedic consultant in his mid 60s as they were much better for his (utterly shot by arthritis) feet than the DMs he’d lived in until then.

Vicliz24 · 28/12/2020 19:39

That's crazy . I'm 56 and love it trainers . If you want to smarten them up pair them with a floaty midi dress . You're 40 , absolutely in the prime of your life . Have fun with your outfits.

Vicliz24 · 28/12/2020 19:40

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

Sick of seeing threads that promote ageist ideas about clothes and style.

There isn't some magical moment were the clock strikes 12 and you must surrender everything you ever loved, get a blue rinse, and don a twin set and pearls and some practical slacks.

I am 40 shortly. It would never occur to me, not in a million years, that I was not ALLOWED to wear anything.

I will wear what the fuck I want til the day I die.

Exactly this
Mumoflil1 · 28/12/2020 19:44

Thanks @Hairobsessed123! I hadn't realised they had such a huge range. I think I'm going to enjoy my celebratory online shop tonight Grin

Late 50s here and have several pairs of Superga trainers. Hope that doesn't put anyone off them Grin

typingcake · 28/12/2020 19:48

I know the perfect type of trainer for your age! It’s called the ‘wear whatever the hell type of trainer you want to wear’! Seriously, wear what you like and what you feel comfortable in. If you’re looking for style tips then have a look at some fashion blogs. A lot of the clothing brands I like (I just turned 40) are styled with trainers and look good. I work from home and I tend to wear a comfy fit, a few layers, nicer materials that are soft., when My toddler isn’t in nursery it’s my mumma clothes that I don’t mind getting sticky hands all over.

OverByYer · 28/12/2020 19:50

I’m 49 and looking for my second pair of Nike Airforce as my previous pair ( with gold ticks) are looking a bit shabby.
Did try a pair of Vejas but the insole is flat, I like a bit of arch support ( now that is age related!)

ZippedyDooDa · 28/12/2020 19:52

Is this a joke? My grandmother wears trainers, she's almost 100

User9574 · 28/12/2020 20:00

I have just bought some Adidas ones, an old version of UltraBoost in nude.

I really like the Skye Hi Tops in Hush.

Slipon is handy, I like the look the SuperLoafer in FitFlop in white leather.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/12/2020 20:01

Currently wearing my Baby Yoda Mandalorian high tops. I’m 50....

User9574 · 28/12/2020 20:04

Yy buy trainers for your feet...I have a slight underpronation hence why I love adidas, nike good too and not all have big swoosh, if thats not your style. I've whittled my trainer addiction down to a white-ish pair, a sporty pair, a statement pair, and a slip on loafer. Trainers with a long flat sole came out of skateboarding I think where you need a flat sole to stand on the board, the comfort factor isn't there for me, but the construction and cushioning might have improved.

GinandGingerBeer · 28/12/2020 20:04

The number on the trainer is the shoe size OP. Not an age limit Wink

I wish there was a disclaimer on S&B telling people not to post am 'I too old for' posts.
