Trainers after 40?

Mumoflil1 · 28/12/2020 18:42

Hi all,

So I hit the big 4-0 next week.

So, over lockdown whilst working from home, my 'style' (if I did have any Grin) has completely gone and now I go mostly everywhere in trainers. But as I get to 40 I wonder if I'm too old for them? What do people think? If you do think acceptable, what types do you suggest for us 40+ ladies. I really am clueless Confused Also, any other lockdown wardrobe tips would be fab x

OP posts:
Stinkywizzleteets · 28/12/2020 20:06

I live in trainers.... although in lockdown I worse my oofos clogs daily and don’t want to give them up for winter...

Comfort before style... welcome to middle age 😂

Londontown12 · 28/12/2020 20:08

@Mumoflil1 enjoy 😉 x

GintyMcGinty · 28/12/2020 20:14

Are you joking?? Any trainers you like, jesus, you're only 40.

This. 100%

Nyctophyllia · 28/12/2020 20:17

Ive just ordered silver ones from River Island, I'm 50

Someone once posted this on one of these ridiculous I'm turning 30/40 etc so I should stop wearing... and I love it, everyone should live by it

Positivevibesonlyplease · 28/12/2020 20:48

Black, white, grey or nude look really cool on older people.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 28/12/2020 20:49

Also silver. Also - you’re definitely not ‘older’ at almost 40.

kursaalflyer · 28/12/2020 21:29

Mine are flaming pink Nikes and I'm mid 60s. Don't know if they're trendy but don't really care. I do like M&S wide fitting Footglove shoes though...

TinselToedElf · 28/12/2020 22:29

@ShrikeAttack

When I turned 40 I immediately went out and got myself a pair of these. I didn't want to risk looking like a deranged flibbertigibbet wearing clothes designed for the under-40s.
Sorry, don't mean to be rude but these are fucking awful. I'd wear these rocking it post 70 but not at my current age of mid 50.
NeedWineNow · 28/12/2020 22:36

Dear God no. I'm 58 and I wear whatever I like including trainers. I'm looking for some new ones at the moment in the sales.

I find this 'age appropriate ' thing really annoying.

StanfordPines · 28/12/2020 22:41

The other thing to remember op is that once you get over 40 you no longer give a fuck what people think.

Craftycorvid · 28/12/2020 22:57

High fives anyone else rocking leopard print trainers Grin

iguanadonna · 28/12/2020 22:57

Now I'm over 40 is when I NEED trainers for my poor sore swollen lump feet.

nevergoingoutagain · 28/12/2020 22:59

I'm 43. I have puma skate style, rocket dogs in leopard print, puma black running style and actual running trainers.

Not that being over 40 is old but as you age why would you stop wearing the most comfortable footwear??

evilharpy · 29/12/2020 09:15

@TinselToedElf "Sorry, don't mean to be rude but these are fucking awful. I'd wear these rocking it post 70 but not at my current age of mid 50."

Bless. I'm fairly sure she was joking Grin

I'm 40. I love my trainers. Leopard print, zebra print, white leather KGs, metallic leather Nikes... I have all sorts. It's an addiction.

ShrikeAttack · 29/12/2020 16:18

Grin I was indeed joking @TinselToedElf and @evilharpy!

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 29/12/2020 17:29

OP I have worn trainers more since turning 40 than at any other stage of my life. I love them. Heels feel very ageing to me now and even flat or low heel boots (which I still love) don’t make me feel as jaunty as lovely trainers. Wear them!!

FourTurnings · 31/12/2020 21:47

51 here and wear trainers frequently, will continue to do so. I’ll wear any shoe I feel like wearing until I’m dead, basically.

Divebar · 31/12/2020 21:57

I’m 50 and I have about 8-10 pairs... various styles. I received a lovely navy pair from Studio Nicholson for Christmas that I’ll wear with navy wide legged cropped trousers and a slouchy navy cashmere sweater ( also a Christmas present )

I'm similar l started wearing trainers a couple of years ago. I have a white pair from next and a black pair from M&S. They go with everything.

This gave me a laugh! I remember fondly when I was 39, what fun it was in my final year of long hair, short skirts, trainers, biker stuff. I was such a mad thing! Sadly that does all have to go out at 40. One simply must be sensible.
Flaxmeadow · 01/01/2021 05:03

Trainers are OK, at whatever age, but they are not suitable for many occasions. Just too casual and a bit common IMO. I wear them now and again but let's be honest, they're lazy fashion.

Pinkfreesias · 01/01/2021 06:29

I'm 50 and still wearing them with my midi skirts & dresses and ankle grazers. I have no plans to stop either! Go ahead and wear them.

I love this. Inspiration!

I'm interested in this thread. I have some old black nikes (don't know their name!) and want some really good and everyday stylish trainers. I wear Hokas for my tennis so need a step down from that level of seriousness. Something to wear with jeans or skirts or whatever. Been looking at Vejas. Can anyone recommend?
And OP, I don't think you're seriously consigning yourself to the dustbin of style at the age of 40. But at 54 I would say that!
