The ultimate winter coat

I reckon I could be looking for the moon on a stick. Recently moved house so my workplace is now a 15 mins walk from home, and I need a coat for the winter. Here is my wish-list

  • waterproof, but not plasticky
  • not too heavy/warm (so I don't land into office sweating buckets) on colder days I can throw on an extra layer under it
  • below the knee
  • prefer zip-up to buttons
  • hood
  • pockets
  • I am open to any colour
  • size 18
  • would love something slim fitting, with a bit of shape to it (obvs I am not slim myself)
  • budget around £150

Any suggestions/reviews would be lovely!

I thought Jeanelle is longer. I think they have the measurements on the website so worth checking there

WiserOlder · 17/09/2020 13:22

Fot the sake of being warm and dry, longer is good, but if it goes too far below your knees, it is a tough look to pull off. They should do a petite version.

Isle Jacobsen. It's waterproof, lightweight, slim fitted and will take a lightweight gilet underneath if needed. The only issue with it is that the hood is a bit bigger than I would like.

Trespass have some great ones

I have this one which doesn't fit your brief in terms of length but is really nice. Waterproof but not shiny, breathable and (I think) quite stylish

There are longer ones though

vengeancer · 23/09/2020 17:43

MoltonSilver which winter coat do you have? I like the look of them but I could only find rain coats with hood. The winter coats seem to come without?

Afibtomyboy · 23/09/2020 17:43

Another vote for Seasalt Janelle :)

Another vote for Ilse Jacobsen here.

As soon as I saw you wanted size 18, I knew I had to share this.

Its not cheap, this one is discounted at £165. But by god it's worth it.

I made it a mission one year to get a one-off investment coat. I have never spent close to this money on anything else.

I tried on every single coat in Joules, Barbour, Seasalt, White Stuff etc. They all tented me. But the Ilse Jacobsen comes with a slim fitted shape with boobs, waist and hips, and is in a super flattering, soft, comfortable fabric. It was way above the rest for me. I'm a top heavy size 18 so I got the 20.

The beauty of it is, it has a fleece lining so warm enough, but also goes over cardigans and jumpers if needed.

I cannot recommend highly enough.

I really like Jack Wolfskin coats. Full price they are out of your price range but there are a few places online that sell them at outlet prices. I've also spent Winter's in a Jack Wolfskin fleece and then a Jack Wolfskin waterproof over the top and stayed toasting warm. This is a cheaper option than their Winter coat range and my waterproof is 8 years old and just as immaculate now as it was new.

Do you have a link for this?

Seasalt Plant hunter. Has kept me warm on all but the absolute coldest days and keeps as dry as any 'outdoors' waterproof I've ever owned. But not overly heavy or thick.

Tazmania77 · 23/09/2020 19:41

I kust went on joules and they have lovely padded coats I got an 18 just now. Might be too thick for you but when it gets icy will be lovely and warm! Was in their clearance section

FuturePerfect · 25/09/2020 18:09

I really rate the Barbour International Garrison coat.

Apart from not being quite long enough it ticks all of your boxes. It is lightweight, warm, waterproof, has a flattering shape and a hood and loads of pockets.

Are Regatta parkas warm does anybody know. I have seen one for under a hundred euro and it looks fine, the site looks like it has warmth more than style in mind but it's so hard to know.

Maybe I should spend an extra hundred and go for landsend or helly hansen, just to be certain it's a WARM parka I buy.

WiserOwl · 26/09/2020 23:30

this is very reasonably priced compared to more expensive parkas would it be naive to hope it could be as warm as a Didriksons/Helly Hanson/North Face or Fjallraven?

AnnieJ1985 · 27/09/2020 08:17

You lot are super! Loads of lovely suggestions and options, I was afraid this post would fall into the MN abyss.

I haven't had a chance to pick one yet, but it is payday tomorrow, and my birthday in Oct, so I am going to treat myself this week.

Thanks again.

Hello!
Today I was near TK Maxx and popped in to see what coats they had, and ended up buying one. It is a little shorter than I wanted (Just above knee) but ticks the rest of the boxes. The puffs on the puffa aren't too puffy Confused because it is a mix of small and large panels with the sides nipped in and a band at the back of my waist giving it some structure. I probably could have sized down but they didn't have a smaller one and I wasn't wearing a jumper today so I wanted to be sure it would fit with one over it. It has a clever half zip layer inside, so you can zip it up from waist level, but leave the entire front/outer layer unzipped.

Bit scared but I just ordered the north face brooklyn parka in black. Not the one with the belt, the new one. It is a bit boring perhaps but streamlined, pockets hidden, it is waterproof, hood can be gathered, it is insulated, not too long, not too puffy looking.

WiserOwl · 04/10/2020 19:31

That looks warm @AnnieJ1985

WiserOwl · 04/10/2020 19:32

You got a bargain!

I spent a lot in the end 😯
