The ultimate winter coat

AnnieJ1985 · 10/09/2020 08:34

I reckon I could be looking for the moon on a stick. Recently moved house so my workplace is now a 15 mins walk from home, and I need a coat for the winter. Here is my wish-list

  • waterproof, but not plasticky
  • not too heavy/warm (so I don't land into office sweating buckets) on colder days I can throw on an extra layer under it
  • below the knee
  • prefer zip-up to buttons
  • hood
  • pockets
  • I am open to any colour
  • size 18
  • would love something slim fitting, with a bit of shape to it (obvs I am not slim myself)
  • budget around £150

Any suggestions/reviews would be lovely!

Seasalt Janelle is long and waterproof.

ForSaleChesterDraws · 10/09/2020 08:59

Seasalt Janelle. Not bulky, press studs on the waist so you can pull it in a bit, below the knee, waterproof. Perfect.

evilharpy · 10/09/2020 09:35

I bought a navy Joules Stormbridge last year that ticks all your boxes except below the knee - I'm 5' 6" and it hits just at the top of my knee. It has a drawstring so you can nip the waist in. They probably have something similar this year.

I'm not a massive Joules fan but I love this coat :)

Thank you! Will check these out

Are you sure you want so long...only I got a Merrill waterproof -which was great but below the knee was just too much coat! I am only 5ft 5 so felt swamped....

Tenner · 10/09/2020 12:20

Graffiti
is this more of a rain coat or is it warm enough for the winter/does it have lining? Couldn't see it mentioned on their website.

AConvivialHost · 10/09/2020 12:31

I love my Janelle

I prefer longer coats generally, but now that you mention it...

Does the Janelle have one of those split zips so you can close the top, but leave the bottom open?

Also are the pockets big? Say for phone/wallet/keys?

Is it bulky/heavy around the shoulders or arm holes, making it restrictive?

I had a quick look at it, and it is very nice!

Oh, and are they true to size?

TheLightGetsIn · 10/09/2020 14:11

I have a Janelle. I don't find it bulky around the shoulders, no. Don't have it to hand so can't check the zip, but from memory I think the pockets are fairly average, large enough but not huge. I found the sizing very generous - I would usually wear coats in a 10 in most shops but bought an 8, and could almost have gone down to a 6! I have tried on other Seasalt coats and while they generally seem to come up on the larger size, I thought the Janelle was particularly generous.

LetTheBirdsSing · 10/09/2020 14:27

I have a Seasalt Janelle and it definitely comes up big. I am a size 12/occasionally 14 and my size 10 Janelle is very roomy.

Yes, to having big pockets and yes to the split zip question.

AnnieJ1985 · 10/09/2020 14:55

Super!

Thank you all so much

I've just bought a Lands End Expedition - absolutely love it. This one - it's warm but light because it's down, has the double zip from the bottom thing, millions of pockets (including fleece lined ones to keep your hands warm). When i bought it you got 40%off if you're a new customer - not sure if still the case?

Graffitiqueen · 10/09/2020 15:40

@Tenner it's just a raincoat.

I had a look and it seems lovely, I'm looking for a black one with brownish fur , is this more brown or gray? Sometimes the photos are not quite true Also i need it to be VERY warm
LightOfAThousandStars · 10/09/2020 18:09

@evilharpy does the Joules Stormbridge come up big or true to size? I like the look but want to know if I should size up. Thanks x

evilharpy · 10/09/2020 18:43

Pretty true to size I think or slightly roomy. Mine is a 10 and I'm a 10-12 and I could comfortably wear a jumper under it.

Pootles34 · 10/09/2020 18:54

Sorry going mines the blue one! I haven't had it through a winter so not 100% but definitely waterproof and windproof - managed very well on recent choppy boat trip!

London1066 · 10/09/2020 19:30

Joules have lovely coats that fit almost all of your criteria. I'm not sure if they do long coats but all of the above would be a match.

WiserOlder · 10/09/2020 19:34

fjallraven kurinda
I saw a lulu lemon coat in my facebook feed but when I went to their site to look for it I couldn't find it but they had a lovely mac that looked ''smart'' , well, I could imagine wearing it to work and not feeling unprofessional.

Has anyone got the DIDRIKSONS Golda Parka ?

www.didriksons.com/en/women/jackets/autumn-winter-jackets/golda-women-s-parka-502580-060

I just received it , ordered black, size 38 but it's really huge, i get that that's the look, but I'm not sure now... looks great when zip open, but that's not how I'll mostly be wearing it

AnnieJ1985 · 10/09/2020 20:06
That is very nice! Unfortunately, out of my price range though

I like that one too, but I can't get away with anything that oversized as I am already oversized
